the only retreat options are Disband or Piedmont and Disband or Syria. Russia can not move into a province that was the location of a bounce this phase.

Yes. And I'm waiting on one such order. Of course I think he might have a few more disbands coming also.

Can a retreating unit capture territory? For instance, if combat had not occured in ank, could A arm retreat to ank and capture the SC?

Yes. But it doesn't count as a capture unless it's occupied in a Fall Movement turn's resolution.

So if arm did retreat to ank, would Russia get the build this winter since it was part of the fall movement?

Yes; adjustments take place after the retreat phase. Thus, in rare circumstances you can set up "offensive" retreats, having an ally dislodge one of your units so that you can retreat it to the most advantageous open space/supply center.

I take it Turkey decided to simply immolate himself in service of Austria? A bit shady, IMHO.

Why? In the game I played with you, you offered to help me take out Remus if I agreed to stab him in the back. (at your expense as you were about done anyway) Would that have been considered service to Austria?

You can view it as Turkey keeping his promise if that makes you feel better. He told Russia if he was double-crossed, he would do everything in his power to make Russia pay. I wish I had the exact quote. Basically it boils down to you should never doubt Ezmate's word. :)

I could accept that save you were the one who backstabbed him worst. :?

Not that I'm upset mind you, since Russia stabbed me too. I'm just saying.

IIRC, the idea was to become your vassal in service of exterminating Remus (and possibly beyond). That would mean surviving as a one or two unit country, for at least a while longer (and if the opportunity came up to grow again by turning on you, I would of course have chosen that). The idea being that serving you for at least awhile was the only viable way I could survive.

The only thing that seemed shady about what ezmate did is that it appeared as if he had basically committed suicide to help another player, rather than making every effort to survive.

But what stessier says does change things - more of a negotiating tactic (useful in future games) than giving up on the game.

Anyways, sorry for intruding, but I was just surprised and struck by Turkey's moves.

You're not intruding. It's nice to know people are watching. It must be interesting to watch people play who might not have much experience with the game prior. You'll see people do unconventional things and strange unions that last to the end of the game. :P I think there is a lot to be said for people learning the ropes and figuring out exactly how the game is played.

My first game my actions came from a fear that I wasn't gaining SP's as quickly as some others in the first couple years. Now I could look at the same situation and realize I was in okay shape. You start to see the ebb and flow of things. All that said I think there is something to be said for playing toward future games. Ezmate may have thrown in the towel for revenge this game but next game when he says, "If you do X, I will help your enemies" you have to give serious pause to stabbing him in the back. ;)

Incidentally, if anyone thinks that I am bitter about the fact that - out of four games played - the only one where Italy fared poorly was the one where I played Italy, you are sorely mistaken. Nope, not aggravated one bit that a power generally considered one of the weakest in the game has done well when played by everyone but me.

He was actually troubled by this fact as well. Austin is right, there was an X/Y statement. We never had such an threat, just a general agreement to work together. It's true, I stabbed him in the back, but maybe because he never told me "do this or else", he found it easier to come back to me.

Hopefully he'll stop by and let us know exactly what his thoughts were. I must say, you could have knocked me over with a feather when his first invitation came in to take on Grund while not protecting himself.
