Holman wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 3:56 pm One point of confusion: why is the small barter-town where Lucy meets the Ghoul called "Filly"? It seems like this will cause some viewer confusion with Philadelphia (especially for people without captions enabled), even though the place is clearly in California like everything else.

Is there a game-canon explanation for this?

The game has never been to Filly (and it's the same canon - the show and the games are all canon, with the exceptions of Brotherhood of Steel 1 &2, and Fallout Tactics.)

I've seen two possibilities, both of which fit and are consistent with other Fallout lore:

1. It was built in a landfill. Apparently this was referenced somewhere, but I haven't noticed it.
2. It is consistent, both in how far away it seems to be and geographically, with Fillmore, CA (although it was actually filmed in the NJ Pine Barrens.)

Oooh, I am originally from South Jersey and have spent some time in the Pines. In fact I've driven past that graveyard numerous times, but never gone in.

It's Wade Salvage, in Atco. One of my best friends from HS has lived there for 30 years or so, about 1.5 miles away from the salvage yard.

I've been hearing about the Pine Barrens since I was a teenager. Multiple series I loved when I was younger were set in and around the area. It would be an interesting place to visit.

Been camping in them quite a few times and have taken a few canoe trips down various waterways through the Pine Barrens. It's an interesting place, for sure. I didn't realize they filmed part of the show in the Pine Barrens, but that's pretty damn cool.

John McPhee's 1967 book The Pine Barrens focuses on the history and ecology of the region.

Started late Saturday with wife and then binged the rest on Sunday we both loved it!
She has no idea it was based on a game and I only have vauge memories but sime things like stimpacks registered with me.

For the people wondering about the vaults...no spoiler just watch to the end and it's all explained. Including the original inspiration for the bobble heads!

Didn't know part of it was filmed in the pine barrens. Might need to stop by on the next trip to great adventure if i remember. Just have to keep an eye out for mobsters and the Jersey Devil.
Don't know if a 2nd season has been greenlit.
Especially because I'm confused about (last episode/scene spoiler)
Spoiler:
What did happen to Coops family? We saw him spying on his wife and in the beginning saw him running with his daughter. Where did they go and how did je get separated from her?

They probably ran toward a vault. My guess is that his daughter got a spot in the Vault but not him.

I've reached the season finale. Among the excellent visual touches:
Spoiler:
The room where Vault-Tex execs and their corporate partners hold their big meeting is precisely modeled on the war room in DR. STRANGELOVE.

Good but it felt very choppy. The flashbacks and the cuts to the little brother investigating things of course but also that constant switching between green tree, dusty wastelands, and destroyed city. I never got a feeling that the traveling had any purpose or direction. It was fun and I'll be happy to watch season 2 but it didn't life up to the Internet love that I'm seeing.

People have begun noticing that the show never seems to violate the FALLOUT game's rules/conventions.

For example, Lucy never has more than one companion at a time (not counting the dog, who is also a freebie in-game).

I have finished Season 1, and I pronounce it excellent. It's probably a better video game realization than even THE LAST OF US.

However, a MAJOR spoiler question:
Spoiler:
Did I miss where it is explained how Lee Moldaver made it from pre-war times to Lucy's time?

She and Cooper Howard (later The Ghoul) were pre-war contemporaries, and she is the one who led Cooper to realize the truth about Vault-Tec's apocalyptic scheme and Cooper's wife's complicity in it. After we saw that, I kept expecting a flashback where Cooper somehow gave Moldaver his spot in the executive suite (Vault 31) and then took his own chances in the nuclear world, eventually to become the bounty hunter we know. But we never got that scene.

As far as I can find, there is no current explanation for Moldaver's survival all these years. It's clear from the Ghoul's exchange with the "President" about the wanted poster that he knows who she is, but I suppose that this could be explained by his having known her 200 years before. Still, at the end of the final episode, he's in the room with her recognizable body and (IIRC?) doesn't say anything about it. Is he not interested that she has survived as well? Or does he already know why?

I assume these are all questions that will be answered in Season 2. But have I somehow overlooked obvious explanations? (I was folding laundry during one of the later episodes, so it's certainly possible.)

[Maybe the most far-fetched and least satisfying explanation is that some Ghouls gain immortality while never actually coming to look like corpses. Thaddeus surviving an arrow through the throat in ep7 suggests this possibility, but I assumed that he was merely an early-stage Ghoul. Moldaver has been around the whole time. ]

Regarding your question
Spoiler:
They don't explicitly say how she survived, no. She's bleeding at the end which (to me) suggests she's not a robot so the only other guess is that she was frozen in a cryro chamber like the Valut Tek executives.

Like you, I strongly suspect it's all part of the S2 plot line as I'd expect they're going to continue to fill in the backstory for The Ghoul and what happened after he heard what his wife said.

If all ghoul's noses seem to fall off over time just what uhhh other appendages do the same? Food for thought.

Speaking of food just where do vaults get their food? Its still not being delivered. So why do they all seem to have unlimited mint condition and still good packaged foods like yum yum deviled eggs and CRAM? I can forgive it still being good as maybe in that world they figured out how to keep food good forever. But the sheer amount of it. Its been 219 years. Even say a vault the size of vault 4 would need a warehouse or vault like storage place at least 20x times the size of the vault if not larger to keep a vault supplied.

The parts that are mostly cartilage - ears and noses. Something different must be happening internally or their joints would fall apart.

I'm four episodes in and my thoughts on the show are about the same as my thoughts on the game. It's...fine.

Walton Goggins as Zombie Boyd Crowder is awesome, but the rest of the cast is pretty forgettable. That actor that plays Maximus is awful. They did an absolutely remarkable job of recreating the world and feel of the games, but I'm honestly finding the overarching story to be mostly dull and uninteresting.

I'll probably finish it, but it certainly hasn't knocked my socks off so far.

I actually thought he was one of the stronger performances on the show...or at least after only 4 episodes. He's expressive, but in a way that still has me confused over what he's capable of. When he's onscreen I don't know for sure if I'm watching a truly good person, a zealot or a sociopath. Or all three. I like that.

Honestly, I think they're all doing a good job. I'm still too early into the show to say if the story is good, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Maximus clearly uses INT as a dump stat; seeing him try to puzzle out some things is hilarious.

And yes, I like all the characters. I think they're doing a great job of making it feel like you're playing a game.

That would probably vary from Vault to Vault. Some would be well-stocked for long-term viability. And some would be for... other purposes.

What I'm primarily referring to is
Spoiler:
Did he or did he not sabotage his friend's chance at being a squire by putting the razors in her boot? I'm 4 episodes in and I don't think there's been a solid answer, so if it comes later, don't tell me. I'm just pointing to that as a reason why I like his acting in this show. I can't tell if he really is capable of doing that. Sometimes I think not, then he does something that I don't expect and I'm back to suspecting him.

I keep seeing it pointed out that Lucy, Max, and the Ghoul are all different kinds of Fallout players.

Lucy is playing her first game and can't bring herself to make evil choices. Max is also a first-timer, but he'll do whatever seems to benefit him at the moment.

The Ghoul is on his sixth or seventh playthrough.
Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.
