Yeah, it really does seem that simple in many instances. I wonder how well reverse psychology would work.

It's like...there's an entire generation of people that doesn't want to acknowledge providing vaccination information for themselves or their kids as it relates to attending grade school and potentially college. This is not a new thing in our society. Sure, providing it to get on a plane or sit in a bar? Yeah, that's new. But the idea of demonstrating you're not a threat to public health? Not new.

So what you're saying is the you support slavery and birtherism?

Honestly I'm astonished at the resistance to any sort of vaccine passport. People willingly submit to have their every move tracked and identity verified by their phones but adding vaccination status to the mix is too much?

My big concern with the idea of showing proof of vaccination is that I lost my official vaccine card (probably on the walk from my second shot back to the car). The place gave me an e-mail with all of the details, but I am concerned that people checking these things will reject it out of hand due to it not looking like the (easily forged) official vaccine card.

I get that - that is why it is disappointing that we can't have a more robust (perhaps digital) verification mechanism. But that's tyranny, mark of the beast territory.

I would hope any sort of vaccine passport would be more robust than, and a replacment for, the vaccine card anyway.

I'm still curious as to the thought process behind the design of the existing card. Eg, why wasn't it made to be wallet-sized? It's like it was designed specifically to be as inconvenient as possible while also being easy to forge and wholly ineffective.

It's an anachronism. No one ever thought there would be a need to present vaccine paperwork as part of routine existence. The cards are designed to be maintained somewhere safe, Xerox copied when needed and then supplied to a school or a camp when necessary.

As malchior pointed out, this could easily be remedied with an app, but it won't be because Jesus.

Any legitimate agency can verify your vaccination status relatively easily, assuming your state is like mine. I am hoping that all states are moving toward what CA has done and what NYC is doing - allowing people to generate QR codes with their own records to allow for fast and easy verification on the go.

In terms of getting an actual replacement card, I'm surprised they emailed you and didn't arrange for a replacement card to be sent to you; that could just be standard procedure in your state or county. Apparently in your area it's not unusual to lose a card.

I did not know this about kids in South Carolina!
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said in an interview with Fox News said kids “can’t learn” while wearing face masks in school, adding there is some “exaggeration” coming from health officials about the seriousness of the pandemic.
What's the plan?
“We’re going to let the parents decide, but there is no confusion among the parents,” he said. “We have seen what happens when these children are subjected to requiring masks so they can’t perform, they can’t learn. We’ve had enough damage to the education system already by virtual learning, which didn’t work at all. We’re really going to be digging out, all of us across the country, in these K-12 for years. But adding more fuel to the fire by requirements, which are not necessary, is not a smart thing to do, and we’re not going to do it.”
As a reminder:
Positive cases in South Carolina are the highest recorded since February as schools are gearing up to reopen, and South Carolina is among the lowest vaccinated states in the nation, with about 44% of residents being fully vaccinated as of early August, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Yes, we are very special here.

We really need a generous lawyer to sue the State. It should be illegal to block health measures designed like that. It is infuriating.

I didn't realize there was a decade (or longer) of kids in masks in South Carolina, not learning. Someone should definitely look into this!

All I can say is that parents in TX need to start suing the districts, school boards and possibly even the governor. This is bonkers.

What do parents do in a state like Florida where mask mandates aren't allowed. They could lose their job if they dont go to work or get in trouble if they dont send their kid to school right?>

Yegads. Thankfully I have this thread, which makes my district's not-great policies seem much less crazed than they would in isolation.

Meanwhile, yesterday was our school's meet-the-teacher / supply drop-off day in prep for school starting next week. Recall that our district is 'strongly encouraging' masking, but not requiring it. Also, that during the school board meeting earlier this week the superintendent was frequently shouted over by 'adults' with such original, enlightened thoughts as 'masks are child abuse!' and 'we refute the medical evidence!'

One of my two children's teachers had a mask on. About two-thirds of the kids I saw had them, and maybe half the parents. Desks are arranged in small groups facing one another.

:grund:

Heaven help us and deliver the under-12 vaccine post-haste. It has become abundantly clear that slow-rolling the testing was a questionable choice, not because it's an incorrect medical opinion, but because we are actively sabotaging our children. If only that was foreseeable many months ago. At present the sole choices across much of the nation are home-school/remote-school your kids again (a decision that had to be made, in our case, many months ago) or risk their health. The priority is 'freedom' for those who wish to increase the risk of others at the expense of actual freedom for everyone else. I'd take slightly elevated vaccine risks over significantly elevated COVID risks for $1000, LeVar.

I know... :violin: I will now retire to my sobbing couch.

+1, and I live in one of the more conservative towns. Since 2017, I've thanked my lucky stars at least weekly, and the pandemic has only reinforced the feeling.
