Calibration. Geologists have long used coins to show scale in photos and Curiosity is following that tradition. 1909 was the first year the Lincoln penny was released.

I was wondering why they sent such an old penny instead of one from the year of the mission.

The year of issue (1909) was also the centennial of Lincoln's birth, FWIW. Personally I would have gone with one from the year of launch, but maybe they wanted copper instead of zinc.

Besides the tradition of using a coin, NASA wanted to use something that everybody recognizes. You can already see that the penny is covered in dust. Over time, we might be able to recognize other subtle environmental changes caused by radiation, temperature extremes, sandstorms, etc.

I'd say that that penny is now the most valuable coin in the world, except that it's not in the world. Someday, though, somebody is surely going to collect it.

It's no golden record. But getting that one back might be a bit more difficult.

Interesting stuff. I never knew it had car like roll up windows or that they interfered with air flow if down in flight. And it never occured to me about the bailing out stuff with the tail.

Also..... Compare 2 planes ..I like comparing WW2 fighters.
