Amazon pre-orders had the code in the box. They sold more than the original shipment in pre-orders and the second shipment didn't have the code in the box. Since they can't tell who got it and who didn't very easily, they emailed a code to everyone.

The codes are going for ~$10 on eBay if you want to lower the cost of the game even more.




I had one of those "They're lynching my friend, help!" strangers last night. So I followed him. To the bottom of a cliff. There was no one around and he just stopped there. I used rifle zoom and couldn't see anyone, couldn't hear anyone. After a minute or so, I got the Mission Fail message. Annoying bug in an otherwise fun night.

Hmm I'd feel a bit scummy to sell the code. First person who pm me can have it with the caveat that they can't sell it. So if I don't know who the person is I'm not giving it to them. So if you have 5 posts ever don't bother.

Sheesh, $26.

When you upgrade you won't be using them anyway. I kept them in case there is any benefit to the fame bonus later.

If there weren't any witnesses then they wouldn't know. Key is to just kill everyone.

Last year they said this would be released on PC as well. I want this game and I just can't warrant buying a console for my crappy TV to play it. One day, I suppose I'll get a current gen console. One day.

Edit: Crappy. It looks like they announced a cancellation the PC version in early April. So now if I get my new TV, I'd have to a new console to get this game. That's an awful lot of money just to play a game.

It probably will get released for the PC but it's probably a year off at this point. I actually use mine on my PC monitor with the VGA adapter which works great. The monitor I bought has a source button built into it so I can switch between the PC and Xbox which is great when I get stuck trying to find a treasure or something.

Has anybody received their $20 credit from Amazon yet? They have Alan Wake on sale for $49.99 with a $10 off future video game purchase. I'd love to get it for $30!

I have not and I suspect they're holding it back for the very reason you mention - I would love to do the exact same thing. I haven't looked at the fine print, but there are people online swearing that Amazon promised to provide the $20 credit by 5/31. Every other time I've earned a promotional credit like this I have it within 48 hours; this is the first time it's been a problem. Maybe they've been taking a beating on deals so they're just spacing it out.

I believe the window for delivery of the $20 credit was up to 10 days after release so I'm not holding my breath yet.

I'm pretty sure Amazon said within 10 days after release we'd get the $20 gift card. So I'm guessing we'll see it sometime next week.

I got a bit further, and got the lasso. Even lassoed and hogtied a horse thief on a nightwatch mission after getting it. It was fun.

I don't quite get how to balance on a horse when you're trying to break it. I've been watching to see what side my character seems to be on and nudging the L-stick in the opposite way, but I still got thrown off 3 times trying to break my stallion. I don't know if that's by design, or if it's possible to break a horse without ever being thrown off if you're good enough.

It's entirely possible. I didn't fall off the first 3 or 4 that I broke. Now I'm at about 50%, don't know if it gets harder or what. Generally, you want to tap the stick only when he really starts to go one way or the other. Get him back to center and wait to see if he starts to slip again.

One other thing, make sure you're away from large cacti, buildings, etc. If you get too close, the view clips and you can't see Marston on the horse.

You may want to try the right stick...at least I think it's the right stick.

Yeah...it's left stick to break 'em. Not sure why I was thinking it was the right.

The only one I've had any trouble with was a jet black thing that actually jerked me off of my steed when I lassoed it, and dragged me for a moment when I tried again on foot. I gave up and haven't seen another black one since.

I'm not saying that it's been terrible, I'm just saying that when I do get thrown off a horse I'm breaking, it seems random- like I've been doing everything I've been doing just fine and then all of a sudden it doesn't work and I'm thrown. I'm not seeing any feedback on how I can do it better next time. That's what I'm not getting.

I just got Marston piss drunk at the Armadillo saloon. I was cut off by the barkeep, so I stumbled my way out the door, had a tough time navigating the 2 stairs, and fell out face first into the dirt...right at the feet of the town preacher who was accosting all we patrons of that fine establishment. Quite a scene considering it took a bit to get to my feet, so I had no choice but to endure a bit of fire-and-brimstone proselytizing before deciding to shanty my ass away from there.

If you think breaking a horse is a tough balancing act...go get yourself completely bombed to the cut-off point and just try to make it across the street.

It was just one of those off the cuff moments that really have me enjoying the hell outta this game.

They were going for $50. I sold one for $27, and my other one for $10.50. Throw in the $3 off I got for preordering at amazon and the $20 gift card, this game was basically free

Gosh golly, partner. With the race mission you couldn't proceed and had to start the whole thing over and over again and hope against hope you'd eventually win some freaking way. With this, you just jump back on the horse and try again and you get it a few seconds later.

Again, I'm not saying it's impossible to break a horse in this game. I've broken several. I'm saying that I've got no clue what I did right, when I did break it; versus what I did wrong, when I didn't.

Anyways I'm long past that. I've been having fun collecting bounties and doing random encounters. Breaking horses isn't a major issue. Telling lawmen from bandits may be, though. I was riding towards Thieves Landing and all of a sudden a couple guys on horseback ride up shooting at something. I instantly pull out my rifle and target, and before I get a shot off, I've got a $6 bounty. Rather than escalate things, I got off my horse, walked over to see if I could pay a fine or whatever, and they shoot me dead.

One other thing, I've only got one more item to check off to unlock the Ballard Twin's outfit: Scrap 1: Search Thieves Landing. When I track it on my map, I get a HUGE purple circle. Will an icon show up if I get close to what I'm supposed to find? Is there anyway to narrow this search down? I just spent most my game session tonight riding around in that purple mark accomplishing nothing.

Thieves Landing is upper right just below the river .It's really close to Bonnie's ranch..just NE of it. The scrap is in the tailor's shop. I've died in a duel with feller named Mash 4 times now. I'll get him someday.

Yes. I already found Thieves Landing. I already bought the scrap. The list of all the things I need to do to unlock the costume is all checked, except for the first item: "Search Thieves Landing". I don't know where/what to search. On the map it's a HUGE circle, encompassing the all the town and more.


EDIT: I googled it. Apparently what I'm looking for is on the second floor of some building I walked past and through several times. I should be able to find and complete it the next time I play.

I found a place to get all the bucks and wolves you could ever want. Down at Rio Lobo. In fact, I think there may be too damn many wolves. They never stop coming. I kill a bunch, and while I am collecting from the dead ones, new ones show up. A man could get rich killing wolves at Rio Lobo.

And I hate mountain lions, hates 'em I tell ya. I was all set to lasso a really nice looking horse and break it in, when a damn mountain lion pounces from nowhere. I lose the horse, and wind up fighting hordes of the damn things. I didn't realize that mountain lions like to hunt in packs.

I wonder if there is a limit to the number of wolves and mountain lions and such like. It sure would become annoying if they don't ever slow down in their constant attacks.

Got to Mexico today very very cool. I haven't run into a single bug since the couple of things I've noticed in the beginning of the game so that's pretty cool. I continue to be impressed with the level of detail in the world. I had such high expectations for this game and I'm shocked that they actually met them

me too. But if you visit the old thread, you would see that many people had problems with it, and when people think back to that game, that's the first thing people bring up. I think RDR is going to fit in that category 5 years from now.

I had the most hilarious gunfight today. I encountered some guys who were shooting at a prospector, I guess. I rode up, and there were raccoons and foxes and sheep and whatnot running around back and forth making their animal noises while the guys were shooting shouting at me and each other and it was just total chaos. I couldn't shoot straight because of all the laughing at the craziness of the situation.

Oh I remember everyone bitching about it and me being totally confused by it. The garage mission in that game was much much worse imho.

One way to tell that Rockstar knows how to crank the ol' hype machine is that I buy their games even when I'm 1000+ miles away from my Xbox.

I just bought RDR, even though I'm out of town for a conference and don't return home to my 360 tomorrow. I walked buy a game store this afternoon and broke down. Now I'm pathetically lusting after the box with no way to consummate this relationship.

I've only done this one other time, and that's when I bought GTA IV with 2 days left on my honeymoon. And yeah, my wife hasn't let me forget it either.

Just had one of those "No way!" missions. So I'm going cross-country and I get a "HELP!" from a lawman. Well, he was transporting two prisoners in a wagon, and the wagon overturned, and now the lawman is walking with a limp, and his prisoners are running away! This wild west is not a nice place...

Huh. Put me in the camp who finished both races so far in the lead, when I looked back crossing the finish line, I couldn't even see anyone. I actually remarked to friends that the racing was fun, but I wished they hadn't made it so super easy. I'm kinda shocked to hear anyone had trouble with the races.

I have yet to fail a horse breaking. Maybe the people having trouble are nudging the stick too hard? I tend to just tap it and release. Generally the only time you really need to do anything is when they show Marston slipping off one side or the other, then you just tap the stick in the opposite direction of the side he's falling off.

Oh - and there's not much more aggravating than finishing a long mission, going to check out a blue dot on the map, and when you get 2 feet away they suddenly turn into enemies and kill you point blank.

I just double tap the stick in one direction and then double tap it back the other way when he starts leaning. Works every time.

Never had any trouble horse breaking. But in card cheating I just can't centerthat thing.

In the races I lost to Bonnie but won the cart race 2 miles ahead. I was kinda disappointed in that one. I wanted more cart smashing fun ala Ben Hur.

I finally made it to Thieves Landing. Lots of cool games in the saloon there. I like how varied the terrain is in the game. I also like that it is just a huge place.
