Biden has done none of the groundwork for a serious campaign. Which might or might not stop him from trying, but with no organization he's not a credible candidate.Pyperkub wrote:Any chance Biden runs? Webb and Chaffee are nonstarters, and I'm not sure Sanders will run — he'll have to switch parties rather soon to do so. His best opportunity to make his point are the debates, and those will likely be starting in the summer.

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
Hillary Rodham Clinton was directly asked by congressional investigators in a December 2012 letter whether she had used a private email account while serving as secretary of state, according to letters obtained by The New York Times.
But Mrs. Clinton did not reply to the letter. And when the State Department answered in March 2013, nearly two months after she left office, it ignored the question and provided no response.
The query was posed to Mrs. Clinton in a Dec. 13, 2012, letter from Representative Darrell Issa, the Republican chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Mr. Issa was leading an investigation into how the Obama administration handled its officials’ use of personal email.
“Have you or any senior agency official ever used a personal email account to conduct official business?” Mr. Issa wrote to Mrs. Clinton. “If so, please identify the account used.”
Mr. Issa also asked Mrs. Clinton, “Does the agency require employees to certify on a periodic basis or at the end of their employment with the agency they have turned over any communications involving official business that they have sent or received using nonofficial accounts?”
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/15/us/po ... s-ago.htmlWhen Mr. Issa received a response from the State Department on March 27, all he got was a description of the department’s email policies. According to the letter, any employee using a personal account “should make it clear that his or her personal email is not being used for official business.”

Why should she? I am surprised they actually paid for the food.
No coincidence Chipotle is a huge Clinton Foundation donor. Seems like they would just give them the food if you are giving them stacks of cash anyways.

Didn't tip at Chipotle? This is a big deal?
I don't like Clinton and I overtip to a fault but that's really reaching to the bottom of the barrel. What's next, the campaign communications manager didn't send a thank you card to the Sprint Mobile call center rep who helped them fix a problem? The campaign bus didn't come to a complete stop before initiating a legal turn on red?

Chipotle is a stand in line for your burrito place. You tell them what to put on it and they slop it on. I guess theoretically you could tip them for properly scooping the slop, but that's a stretch. I never see anybody tipping.

Who tips at Chipotle? Seriously. I just ate there today, and I also didn't tip. It's not the kind of place a tip is expected at all. It's the kind of place you might drop your extra change in the tip jar or if your service was exemplary you might give a buck or two but I never have. Geez.

Yeah, it's just an absurd criticism. And that manager probably needs a sit-down with his boss:
If it's "nobody's business," why are you blabbing about it to whoever will listen and releasing security video? But Wright [the manager], who regretted not being able to meet Clinton, says the whole episode was no big deal.
"It's really nobody's business," Wright said, "if somebody leaves a tip or they don't."

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
Cash Flowed to Clinton Foundation as Russians Pressed for Control of Uranium Company
When do we get to start calling these charity donations and speech fees bribes?Beyond mines in Kazakhstan that are among the most lucrative in the world, the sale gave the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the United States. Since uranium is considered a strategic asset, with implications for national security, the deal had to be approved by a committee composed of representatives from a number of United States government agencies. Among the agencies that eventually signed off was the State Department, then headed by Mr. Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
As the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation. Uranium One’s chairman used his family foundation to make four donations totaling $2.35 million. Those contributions were not publicly disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors. Other people with ties to the company made donations as well.
And shortly after the Russians announced their intention to acquire a majority stake in Uranium One, Mr. Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.

Another "criticism" not really worth noting with all the real meaty stuff out there. Nearly every big-stage politician does this. In fact, that one falls kind of flat given the time involved. You could probably do one with Bush or Obama over the course of a few years or even months on the campaign trail.

Why that whole "populist" thing is going to be a hard sell...especially for Hillary.
Be sure to click on the "related graphic" link for a comparison of the candidates' net worth. I couldn't display it here.

...
Hillary Clinton came from a middle-class suburban Chicago family, enrolling in public schools and occasionally helping her father run his small drapery business. But it has been decades since she lived a middle-class life.
Her efforts to connect have been clear. Last week, she stopped by a Chipotle in Maumee, Ohio, ordering a fruit juice and a chicken bowl with guacamole. She dropped into coffee shops in rural Iowa. And she was driven around in a van upon which she bestowed the distinctly lowbrow nickname “Scooby,” after a television cartoon dog.
It was all designed to put her into contact with what her campaign calls “everyday Americans.”
But Clinton also acknowledged last year that she hadn’t driven a car since 1996. She mulled whether to run for president while vacationing at the oceanfront home of Oscar de la Renta in the Dominican Republic.
She was reported to have received a $14 million advance for the book she released last year. Over the past year, she continued speaking before groups large and small for a fee of at least $200,000 a speech — earning more in about an hour than an average American makes in about four years.
“She has not driven a car in this century,” Madden said. “How do you relate to people if you haven’t driven a car? That’s an everyday American experience. Driving to work, sitting in traffic, picking up the kids. Getting your license renewed, paying taxes is an everyday American concern.
“She hasn’t even had the simplest everyday occurrence to credibly, genuinely identify with the average voter,’’ Madden said. “And that is a huge challenge for her.”

Maybe instead of debates they should have a series of competitive events. Some ideas:
Drive from Hyde Park to Evanston during rush hour.
Book a flight from Omaha to NYC online.
File a 1040 EZ (using fictitious W2s, of course).
Make a phone call.
Type an email.
Use an ATM.
Eat a hot dog.

To me it's about more than net worth, although if you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth it's going to be a hard sell no matter what.Kraken wrote:Maybe she should drop the populist act before she becomes a laughingstock.
Hillary is a senior citizen, who (according to Nox) hold the majority of wealth. She makes as much as she does because of who she is. Tell me about where she grew up and what she did before politics (if anything) and that might help.
I typically don't hold peoples' wealth against them especially if they are a first generation millionaire. Kudos to Christie for releasing his tax information year after year (even if I don't agree with his politics).
I can't believe that Biden is barely worth halfa million dollars. That makes no sense and I smell accounting foolery. It's just not possible to be worth so little at his age with a career culminating as the VP of the US of A.

The thing with most high level politicians is that they have private sector stash and the public sector retirement free ride. Biden looks like he's "only" got the fat free ride. That's still a nice capstone to a successful career. Plus he can get tens of thousands per speech if he wants to work a little.

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
I don't, either, if they came to it honestly through their own efforts (my biggest problem with Bill Clinton was his weak grasp of ethics, so frequently skirting the edges of the law). I'm cooler toward those who were to the manor born, but even that's not a deal-breaker in and of itself. One must be rich if one wants to win a national office, after all. That's just how the system works. Mr Smith never goes to Washington anymore.GreenGoo wrote:
I typically don't hold peoples' wealth against them especially if they are a first generation millionaire.
I do have a problem with rich people doing an unconvincing aw-shucks, just-like-you routine. I don't think Hillary's going to pull that off any better than Romney did, and like him she's going to become a punchline if she persists.

They all get that.LawBeefaroni wrote:He's got health care for the rest of his life and will probably draw a few hundred K/year in pension. That's probably the same lifestyle as someone retiring with several million dollars in the bank, right?
I wasn't suggesting he was going to live in a box on the street come retirement, I was questioning how it is possible to not acquire more wealth in what appears to be a successful political career.
Graft alone must be through the roof.

But in all seriousness, I would expect him to have collected more. I'm sure you are worth more than halfa mil and you have decades of career still ahead of you. I don't want to talk about my net worth but I have decades of career ahead of me too and I expect to far surpass Biden by the time I'm his age. And I'm a public servant making about 66% what I would in private industry with exactly zero political power. I have kids, I have a mortgage, I have college to save for (although not in the hundreds of thousands per kid of course. I guess that would make a pretty big difference).
It's just...weird.

Stiff a waiter.LawBeefaroni wrote:Maybe instead of debates they should have a series of competitive events. Some ideas:
Drive from Hyde Park to Evanston during rush hour.
Book a flight from Omaha to NYC online.
File a 1040 EZ (using fictitious W2s, of course).
Make a phone call.
Type an email.
Use an ATM.
Eat a hot dog.
Park like a dick.
Skeet shooting.
