The Predator's weapons weren't weapons of war. They were weapons designed to allow the hunt to be completed in a way that earned them respect. I'm sure they could have just sat and bombarded Arnold's team from orbit, but that wasn't their goal. And I'm sure they use different tactics in cases of open warfare. But not for these hunting expeditions. These are more in line with people who go deer hunting with a spear today (and there are people that do that.)

And to be fair, they kept the full nuke around in Predator 2. Danny Glover just figured out a way to defuse it.

If I wanted to make a better comparison, I'd point to certain northern plains Native American tribes that had traditions related to earning recognition in battle by making it harder on themselves. One might ride up to a strong enemy in the middle of a battle, for instance, and slap them across the face, then ride back out without killing or disabling them to earn recognition for prowess and courage. One society would go out on the battlefield in advance with a belt hanging loose to a certain length (around eight feet or so - not long ) and stake the end of it down so that they could not move from that spot for the duration of the battle, win or lose.

That doesn't mean that they didn't have better weapons for hitting an enemy, or that they were incapable of retreat - just that they chose to put themselves at a disadvantage for the glory it brought them in the eyes of their people.

That was always my impression of how the Predators hunted. There was no glory in killing an unarmed person (and it might even be shameful), while the greatest glory was in killing someone who represented a genuine threat. It (presumably) isn't the whole of their culture, just one aspect of it. For all we know there were soldier predators (and short order cook predators and IT tech predators, too) that didn't trophy hunt or use those weapons. They just wouldn't have the respect and recognition in their society that the hunters have.

The best part of any of the Predator movies was when the Predator stripped off his weapons and armor and fought Ahnold 1 on 1.

That to me is way more impressive than some schmuck sitting in a tree hundreds of yards away, doused in deer piss and camouflage, with a high powered sniper rifle, and acts like killing a lesser opponent is some kind of victory.

You want to do something impressive? Get out of the tree, put down the gun and wrestle your prey to death.

Same goes for the Predators.
Put the hi-tech gadgets down and engage with your opponent in a fair and balanced fight.
How they could find killing lesser beings with more advanced tech as somehow making them superior is the same mentality as the guy sitting up in a tree. They're really not. They just have better weapons.

I was going to post the clip of Ventura claiming chewing tobacco made him a “goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus” as the best thing about Predator….but I forgot he calls everyone a “goddamn f@&#$t” prior to that. Sadly, some parts of that movie have not aged well.

Sometime in the late 80s, window technology was forever changed by the invention of something called "blinds". I can't stress the historical importance of slat based window obfuscation. In short, it's a series of plastic strips held together by two or more columns of string, with a pulley system that can tighten or loosen those strings, thus closing or opening the blinds by lifting or lowering the plastic strips in place.

...at least that's what I've heard. I don't use curtains or blinds.

Okay, finally watched it last night.

I also would have paid to see this in a theater. I thought it was fun, true to the original Predator, and a good story. It was a bit slower than I expected, I will admit. But the last 45 minutes or so really made up for that. Midthunder was sufficiently bad ass, but in a believable manner (for the most part). I thought the actor playing her brother was great and I hope to see him in other stuff in the future too.

Quick detour: I have this weird quirk that always makes my first thought about any movie set any time before the mid to late 1900s this: man, those people probably smell awful. I get immediately distracted by my belief that people rarely bathed, and that the B.O. in their villages/cities was most likely unbearable by modern standards.

Okay, back to the movie.

I liked Predator 2 and Danny Glover. It helped that he and Gary were in Lethal Weapon before that. Not as good as 1 but it was a different movie, actor lead and setting. Im surprised it was as good as it was.

Yowza. Halfway through season 3 The Great throws a massive curveball, and the show goes from very good to some of the best television I’ve seen. I honestly thought the show would suffer from that twist, but it has given it new life in so many ways.

If you like raunchy comedies with some truly wonderful dialogue and an insightful study of class warfare and gender struggle, you really should be watching this gem of a series.

Also, the season 3 finale had a completely anachronistic ending that worked really well

You definitely don't want the kids around when you're watching it. The dialogue is hard R...venturing even towards the extremes of that. And it's incredibly absurd at times, while still staying rooted in the time it's set.

My kids are both teenagers. The oldest has seen Deadpool 1 & 2. Their mom would love to think that foul language would never grace their ears, but they also go to school and have access to the internet. I am way past worrying about exposing them to interesting language. I'm more hesitant on super grimdark stuff, but language, nudity and moderate violence are all cool by me.

The nobility on this show are depicted as pure hedonists. All they care about is sex, violence and food. Which is probably closer to the truth than history books would want us to think.

It's not a Hulu original, but it's on Hulu... not sure if this is the best topic to put this?

I'm no expert on anime, I watched Star Blazers back when it aired, then Akira in high school, and only recently started watching more as my 13yo likes it. Seen a lot of studio Ghibli movies and Cowboy Bebop.

We just started Spy x Family and it's been really enjoyable. It has serious moments, a lot of heart and very offbeat humor. It's set in a fictional world, feels circa 1980s cold war East/West Germany. Lead character is a top spy who needs to take cover as a family man.

Can't recommend it enough.

Wife and I are halfway through season 1 and I am really enjoying it, she on the other hand, is less impressed. I think she was expecting more Bridgerton. I did not set this one up well.

I just told her it was a fictional take on Catherine the Great. I honestly forgot your description here that caused me to add it to my list (until I came looking for it to post our take on it). I think she is getting used to it and we don't really have anything else to watch so she's kind of stuck.

Is it raunchy just from a dialogue perspective, or also "HBO raunchy"?

Dialogue. Also, I think you mean "Cinemax Raunchy".

There's actually very little nudity in the show. Everyone's wearing 37 layers of clothes at any one time, so when there's a sex scene it's almost always while people are still wearing their finery.

But the dialogue is hilariously profane.

edit: and shit, they just announced there won't be a season 4. Ah well, it did tell a full story in many ways.
