The thing is, while racism may be driving a significant portion of Trump's success, I think it's moved well beyond that. I think people are supporting him because of emotions. How his attritude and personality (not to mention his success so far) is making them feel, rather than anything specific he's said.
Hispanics

We’re the smartest people, we’re the most loyal people, and you know what I’m happy about? Because I’ve been saying it for a long time. 46% were the Hispanics—46%, number one with Hispanics. I’m really happy about that.

Trump's crowing that because he won 46 percent of the Latino vote that Hispanics across this country love him?

...I'm not sure he understands this whole voting thing. Well, that and statistics.

To be fair it was a caucus and from all accounts a poorly run one at that - so in this particular state I don't think anyone understands the whole voting thing.

From that link, this will be the deciding factor, methinks:
There will be a chunk of GOP electorate who think Trump is unfit to be president. They might not vote for Clinton but could stay home.

The Hispanic portion of the caucus participants was 8%. Hispanic population of the state is 19.7%.

He also loves the poorly educated.

That's what people were saying months ago, and now he's cruising to the nomination.

I would not underestimate him. This nomination has shown that there is an extremely angry electorate out there right now that are sick of DC - Democrats and Republicans alike. When it comes down to choosing four -if not eight- more years of Clinton, and a total Washington outsider, you could see voters across the political spectrum jump on the Trump train.

Common sense is out the window right now - I haven't seen anything yet that leads me to believe that Trump's antics are going to do him in. If anything, they have just made him more powerful. This is a Sanjay from American Idol moment.
I have to believe that when the general election rolls around enough independents will show up to make sure Trump doesn't get into the Oval Office.

In a discussion with my wife this morning, my position was pretty similar to Rip's. If he gets in the office, there is enough process involved in getting anything done that nothing truly outrageous (if he even tries the whacky things he says he'll do) will make it through. He's not going to burn down the country in 4 years (or 8 years).

If Trump gets into the Oval Office, I can't help but think my personal opinion of the American people will slip a few pegs. Of course that doesn't matter to anyone but me, but my respect for the country as a whole will drop. This is not the American people voting for someone who I disagree with, it's the American people voting for clown who revels in some of the worst qualities of humanity. As the doonsbury cartoon pointed out, he's a bad person. Objectively. And while sometimes you need bad people to do things that good people can't do, President of the most powerful country in the world is not one of those things.

I believe that the independents are going to step up when the time comes, and outvote the bigots, the disenfranchised, the angry and the ignorant.

We'll see. No matter what happens, he's already made it farther than ANYONE but the most insane thought he would. Great. :?

We'll lose the respect of the rest of the world ( what little of it we have left) and that's the real long-term damage of a Trump victory.

That, and a President Trump would make for some tremendous ISIS / Al Qaeda recruiting videos. They've been arguing for decades that the U.S. is locked into a war with Islam, and here would be Americans electing a president who says, "Yup, we sure are." That could have some negative consequences.

I realize it's trite and stereotypical to say this sort of thing, but good lord man...

Before this election I didn't hate Trump any more than any other shyster and/or tv personality. He's just one of many people doing things and behaving in ways that I find obnoxious and offputting. Even his announcement to run didn't affect my opinion of him much. He's a giant blowhard and buffoon, so I expect that sort of thing.

It's only now that he is almost guaranteed to be one of two candidates for the presidency of the USofA that my blood has really started to boil. Which is weird, because Trump hasn't changed, so why have my feelings about the guy changed? Who I really should hate is everyone supporting him. Hating that many people makes me sad.

And like I said, this isn't Romney or Bush or any other Rep that I might have indifferent feelings about in terms of their policies or whatever. I dislike Trump as a human being. His "policies" are so outlandish that even addressing them seems asinine, and this coming from someone who regularly engages Rip.

We’re going to bring in so much money and so much everything. We’re going to make America great again, folks, I’m telling you folks we’re going to make America great again.
We have a trade deficit with Mexico. They’ll pay for the wall. They’ll be very happy about it. Believe me. I’ll talk to them. They’re going to be very, very thrilled. They’re going to be thrilled to be paying for the wall.
Trump is very good at saying what the far right wants to hear. But there is absolutely no substance to what he is saying. Every one of his speeches are fluff. The wall is a great example, we are just supposed to take his word for it that Mexico will be thrilled to build a wall. This is complete and total bullshit. The list of Trump topics could go on, but none of them have a chance in hell of actually happening.

Yeah, I would be a little nervous with Trump getting so close to the presidency if he's the nominee (what if there's a big market crash in late October 2016??). BUT his general election chances would be really slim. The vast majority of people are partisan voters even if they describe themselves as independent (even if that partisanship sometimes is more in the form of voting against the other party). Trump is (a) unlikely to play well with the small group of actual independent voters; and (b) is good insurance against one of the major risks otherwise facing democrats in this election - the danger that minority vote will drop off from Obama levels.

He's pandering to those too stupid to understand any sort of policy detail in the first place. Trumps response to every challenge is an ad hominem counterattack. Hopefully Hillary will be able to call attention to this. I'm kind of surprised some super pacs already aren't floating this message out there, unattached to any Democratic candidate.

I just heard Brian Kilmeade on Fox News Radio and his panel convince themselves that Trump would snipe a large number of independents and even democrats from Hillary.

That's why I listen every morning. Their delusions make me laugh.

Talk Radio used to piss me off, but I'm finally old enough to realize that it doesn't matter if they believe these things or not, the simple act of saying them pushing things in that direction (whichever direction they're pointing at any particular moment).

The simple act of saying something out loud makes it true to a certain number of people, and the more it is said, the more it is believed. It's propaganda in it's simplest form.

So now I'm not amazed or galled that talking head would believe the crap they're saying. instead I'm disheartened that it seems to work on a certain percentage of their audience.

I just don't think Trump can win a general with his preposterous idea of outlawing pre-shredded cheese. I may be out of touch, but I just don't get the political appeal of making America grate again.
