I got cast in the quartet for The Music Man. So, yay.
But I'm already having rehearsal remorse.

Re: Random randomness
It'll be fine. I've always wanted to do Music Man, and specifically the barbershop. But they didn't cast me as the bass (which annoys me because I already know the bass part, and I'm a really good bass) and want me to try second tenor. I get why they did it...they had two decent basses, and nobody to sing second tenor, and the second tenor line is the melody, so you need a strong voice in there.
But still. I wanted to do bass.
(Oh, and I was worried about how tricky the quartets were going to be, until I found out we also had to do Rock Island as well. Now the quartet is the least of my worries. )

Great piloting skills.
This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helicopter rescue mission. The pilot is a PA National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the ass end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack, on a steep mountain cliff, and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear. If this does not impress you... nothing ever will…...

FYI:
So not a rescue but the most precarious perp walk ever.In November 2003, a U.S.-led coalition launched Operation Mountain Resolve in the Nuristan and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan in order to disrupt anti-coalition militia (ACM) operations and prevent militia members from seeking sanctuary in the rugged Afghan provinces. The above-displayed photograph of the precarious-looking rooftop landing by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter (which began circulating via e-mail in December 2003 and started making the rounds of the Internet again in August 2006) was taken during that operation by U.S. Army Sgt. Greg Heath of the 4th Public Affairs Detachment.
Although the text that accompanied copies of this image sent via e-mail in 2006 suggested the activity shown therein was part of an effort to evacuate wounded coalition soldiers, the photo actually captures the Chinook helicopter touching down to receive Afghan Persons Under Control (APUC) captured by members of the U.S. 10th Mountain Division.

Not to diminish this piloting skill one bit, but it's amazing how frequently they can hover one of those beasts in a precise spot. I've seen similar photos, and I can hardly believe how close the helicopter is to a rooftop or cliff.
IIRC, the Vietnam novel Matterhorn has several scenes of precarious cliffside helicopter loading and unloading. I believe they're Chinooks, too, which tells you how long those things have been in service.

Re: Random randomness
I'm so fed up with networks feeling compelled to randomly take "breaks" from showing new episodes of a show (well, okay, I know that they are trying to "stretch it out" into a standard Sep-May TV season, but it's an obsolete model that absolutely needs to GO). If your show just took a 6-week hiatus for the "mid-season break" over Christmas holidays - don't show 2 new episodes and then go on another 3-week break! Another show I watch, they showed their "winter finale" 1st week of December and won't show new episodes until February.
No wonder they are constantly trying to figure out why great shows start randomly losing ratings: people are busy, and watching TV shouldn't require a planning spreadsheet. If I have to wait 2 months to watch a continuation of a show, I'll probably forget about it.

Re: Random randomness
You can probably thank the Nielsen sweeps for a lot of that. IIRC, networks like to hold back new episodes for shows to air during the sweep weeks in order to pump up the ratings.gilraen wrote:I'm so fed up with networks feeling compelled to randomly take "breaks" from showing new episodes of a show (well, okay, I know that they are trying to "stretch it out" into a standard Sep-May TV season, but it's an obsolete model that absolutely needs to GO). Re: Random randomness
So fed up with my work network administrator.
A year ago, I (and others) asked to upgrade the remote desktop with our legacy applications so more than 1 user could log in at a time. It took 6 months to roll out the test environment and "phase out" the old environment. Buried in that "phase out" announcement were "instructions on how to create a shortcut on your desktop." I had a shortcut already, so continued to use it for the last 6 months. Apparently, I was supposed to know each end user was expected to create a NEW shortcut and there was a reference in the window indicating that I was still in the old environment.
I would have still been in the old environment if I hadn't found a 2016 patch for a legacy 2013 application and asked for it to be installed. Isn't the point of IT having network access to end user machines so that they can roll out upgrades without the end user's involvement? And it was only 8 end users whose machines needed to be fixed!!!

We were happy to see iZombie return a few weeks ago (1/12) after having what we thought was a winter break (last episode aired 12/8). Well after the 1/12 episode the next new episode is 2/2. It defies logic.gilraen wrote:No wonder they are constantly trying to figure out why great shows start randomly losing ratings: people are busy, and watching TV shouldn't require a planning spreadsheet. Can't sleep. Thinking about building some kind of wheelchair ramp at the M-I-L's. I could use railroad ties and composite decking, which would end up with me having to build only a small landing about sixteen inches off the ground, but that would end up with a long, somewhat steep run. Not a problem for me, but the ex might not be able to hack it. Why am I doing this? Because I have known her since I was sixteen, and Mom didn't cheat on me, Linda did. This end-of-life shit sucks.

Well, this is how network TV has been done in the states for decades. They're trying to do things differently with the success of how cable TV formats things (see networks doing summer seasons or short run seasons of some shows like Agent Carter or the 24 reboot), but, otherwise, the status quo is long breaks during traditional TV seasons with a focus on the sweeps months.gilraen wrote:I didn't grow up in the States in the 80s...pr0ner wrote: What did you do back in the 80s and 90s when there wasn't a DVR and networks did the exact same thing they do now?

I still remember the old TV seasons, where you would get a full half year of programming all in one shot, and then they would go into re-runs for the rest of the year, and then a new season would start up again in the fall. Seems to me that the shift to broken up seasons (by the major networks, at least) is around the same time that they had the writer's strike back in the late 80's. But I may be talking out of my butt.

There is an article in the local paper saying a student at my school was arrested in December for bringing a gun to school and that parents were upset because they were not told about it. The principal is mentioned by name and quoted regarding the incident. Trouble is this never happened at our school or even in our district. It did happen in a neighboring district but they used our school's name and our principal's name - and, given that it never happened, he never gave a press conference regarding it to be quoted from!

something ain't right there. When I worked at 7-Eleven at the closing of the 80s through the mid 90s we sold Vernor's Slurpee's. If you could get syrup in a tank, we'd hook it up to Slurpee machine. I loved me some Dr Pepper Slurpee and Vodka.
Also warm Vernor's is not rare, is it?
I miss that it's not as strong as it used to be, much like Coke. I want my freshly opened pop to make my eyes water like I'm plucking a nose hair.
