Just checked. Mine would be big enough to get a paw in but not an arm through unless you were a kitten or tiny puppy. At its biggest gap when opening, it may be 3/8". Maybe all of the modern fridges have a bigger gap and I just don't pay attention because I only ever open my fridge.
