OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Two games of Ticket to Ride with the folks and my aunt as a new player. Dad crushed us in the first game. In the second, I had LA to Miami, Miami to New York, so I strung together all 45 cars around the edge of the board and never had to reroute due to opponent interference.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
So I just got A Game of Thrones for my birthday, and am very excited to try that one out. But I'm also on the fence about ordering some other titles, namely:
- Quarriors: don't know much about it, except that it should be a quick dice-rolling game akin to Dominion. My gaming group could always use another filler game that's not too hard. But I fear it will be too light. Then again, the filler game right now is Munchkin, and I'm really sick of that one (it's far too long and drawn-out for such a simple luck-heavy title).
- Carcassonne: Don't have it, but apparantly it's pretty much a classic. I'm curious what all the fuzz is about. Can I be a boardgame enthousiast without owning this?
- Ticket to ride: my girlfriend only plays Dominion, because it's quick and easy. Would she like this? I'm guessing no, because it's probably a lot longer (and heavier to set up)?
- Lord of the rings LCG: I have the base set and 2 expansions, and am actually not too fond of it, but I'm hoping it'll grow on me if I buy the other decks of this cycle, to increase my deck building options.
For reference: my group started with Magic, and then moved onto a lot of the Fantasy Flight Games and other well-known titles (War of the Ring, Pandemic, Smallworld...) but perhaps it's time to have a couple of classics or other genres thrown into the mix. If anyone has any opinions or thoughts about the above-mentioned titles, please share them!

OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I just taught my wife (who dislikes most "strategy" board games) Ticket To Ride last night and she loved it. It's about a 5 minute set up, plays in about an hour, and is a great combo of luck and strategy. I don't think you should be afraid of it being too deep.
(And for the record, she beat me by 9 points in her first game...)

Yeah, Ticket to Ride is nothing to setup compared to Dominion. Nobody has to pick the cards they're going to use, or do any other setup. You take out the scoring chits, toss the bag of trains to each player, pass out the cards, and start playing.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
A solid 3 days of gaming for moi.
Redwarlord and his wife joined me at my parent's house on Wednesday evening for Alien Frontiers and Quarriors. Alien Frontiers was the expected favorite as both redwarlord and i have played before and loved it. His wife was quite taken with it, but it does have issues when playing with folks prone to AP. Fortunately, we were able to cajole redwarlord enough to circumvent the worst of it when this would happen.
Thursday the guys I grew up with were down for the annual get together and we played a full game of Mansions of Madness (Season of the Witch story). It was a tense, nail biting affair that eventually ended with only one survivor completing the investigator's goal. They won, but only barely.
We then played a game of Dungeon Run and I'm happy to report that when the rules are used correctly, the game is a blast. We had a great time with it and it ended with two players just trying to kill each other over an earlier back stab attempt, while the rest of us fought at the entrance over the summoner stone. Redwarlord won it by just slaughtering everyone at the end. I realize now that I simply cannot play the necromancer character correctly. Twice now I've tried to use him effectively and he just gets steamrolled by every other player...and monsters. I'm just not smart enough for that one.
The evening was rounded out with Quarriors. I taught because we had 5 players and I think everyone enjoyed it a great deal.
Friday I played Star Trek Fleet Captains with Red's wife and she beat me as the federation by frantically completing science missions in one corner of her side of the board as my Klingon task force was destroying the rest of her fleet.
Then we broke out the Star Trek Deck Building Game to keep the theme going. I was able to win by accumulating enough diplomacy to commandeer a Warbird for the first time and I quickly grabbed up the required 400 VP to win by destroying everything in my path. Once someone gets a bigger flagship I really think the War Events are intended as a way of keeping them down by allowing the other players to fill their deck with ensigns and keep them from taking the points in that event. But it certainly is difficult to overtake someone when they get such a massive flagship into their play area. I can't wait for the stand alone expansion that's coming this month.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Since I got Settlers of Catan: Seafarers and Dominion: Hinterlands for Christmas christmas day was filled with those 2 games. We played a few games of Settlers before starting Seafarers because my brother ans sister never played Settlers. After dinner we played a few games of Dominion. Playing board games with my father is a little frustrating because he has to read every card as he plays it and just takes a long time to play his hand. It was a fun day though, I usually do not play table top games with my family so it was a break from the norm.

Played 3 Games of Kingsburg (with expansion) on Monday with Remus West, redrun, LordMortis, and bb2112.
Played Chrononauts with Remus and bb2112 after the others left.
Spent all day with Remus getting our asses kicked by the Dragons of Defenders of the Realm.

Santa dropped off the base set of THUNDERSTONE and Quarriors! which was a nice treat. No idea why this amuses me so much, but I giggled when I saw it in the set:

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Actually, I haven't found that to be true. I started off with the Dragonspire stand alone expansion and I wanted more cards. I think I actually prefer THUNDERSTONE over Dominon, mostly because it has way more character and it's not nearly as abstract. Perhaps it's because you're not using all caps for the game and yelling it in a Jack Black 70s metal voice every time you play? Dominion definitely seems like you could easy convince non-gamers or casual board gamers to play whereas THUNDERSTONE probably requires previous experience as a D&D player back in the day - so I get that.
Quarriors! looks to be insane and I just want to get more and more dice. I swear, the people that design these games must know there's a subset of boardgamers that are collection/completion maniacs because it's hitting a nerve with me that I'm finding hard to ignore.

I got both Thunderstone and Dragonspire for Christmas. I have to say it's probably my favorite deck builder right now. Dominion pretty much leaves me cold, and I enjoy both Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. Guess I'm going to have to try Quarriors, based on the love it's getting here.Zarathud wrote:While I enjoy Quarriors, Thunderstone is the gaming equivalent of a lump of coal.Smoove_B wrote:Santa dropped off the base set of THUNDERSTONE and Quarriors! which was a nice treat.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
My only complaint about THUNDERSTONE is that the base set didn't come with the nifty dividers that were included with Dragonspire. After some quick searching, it turns out they put the slightly oversized divider cards for the base set in the first expansion, Wrath of the Elements. Not sure if all three sets will fit in the Dragonspire box, but I am hoping they do. But yeah, I'm with you -- I really like it and I think it's the "dungeon crawl" theme the decks have.
The first expansion for Quarriors! just came out a few weeks ago -- 19 new cards and 20 new dice. I haven't even played the game yet and I already want it.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played a (6-hour) round of Descent: Journeys in the Dark as the Dungeon Master the other day. Pretty good time, although the pace really needs to be picked up by about 2x, perhaps with smaller/more linear dungeons or fewer tactical decisions for people to make. At the end (after some urging from the other players), I basically just let the players skip about half the dungeon to get to the final boss fight (by teleporting to a non-activated glyph), since it would have taken hours to finish it without skipping the extra walking. It didn't help that one of the players had some major analysis paralysis going on.
I spiked my regular overlord deck with some treachery cards (some extra traps and a card that just lets me trade it in for a lot of threat), as well as spiking the stack of normal glyphs with some trapped/malfunctioning ones. A few thoughts:
- Master Kobolds are solid gold. They get you discounted traps, which you can use to (partially) block up hallways, have doors and treasure chests blow up in people's faces, and otherwise make the heroes' lives miserable. I make it a habit to spawn them in out-of-the-way places so the heroes either have to put up with discounted traps or spend time killing the little dorks.
- Flying creatures are your best friend. If you can get a whole bunch of Razorwings going, you can use them to bypass the tough blocking heroes and hit their weaklings hanging out in the back. Sure, they'll die from the counterattack if you can't retreat them, but they're expendable, and if you kill the heroes enough times, you win.
- "Evil Genius" is a great card because it lets you cycle through the deck 1.5x faster, which is a great alternative to actually killing the heroes - as the game goes on, the heroes bulk up and get great equipment, while your monsters start to suck ass by comparison. When a hero can kill an ogre with one attack while your dork monsters can't get through their armor, you basically need to throw up a wall of bodies and other things to block the way while you cycle the deck. "DOOM" is also helpful, as more dice means more surges, which convert to threat tokens at 2:1, which you can then use to drop more traps or summon more meat to block the way. "Trapmaster" is ok, but more for the extra trap damage than the reduced trap cost.
- There are also a bunch of cards which let you add extra monsters or upgrade existing ones in subsequent rooms that the heroes reveal, but I don't feel like it's worth it unless you happen upon a butt load of threat early on in the game. Although, I wouldn't mind having an extra red (boss) creature here and there, as they have good special abilities sometimes. Unfortunately, that brings me to my next point:
- There are way too many goddamned status effects and special abilities. I seriously forgot to use half of them, most importantly, "Undying", which lets certain critters get back up after getting whacked.
I suspect we won't be seeing this game played for some time now, which is fine as it's pretty easy to get burnt out on it.

That right there is why you inherited my copy of Descent. I've accepted that what little time I spend playing board games these days is usually only in two hours or less chunks. Descent is a cool idea, and would've been totally awesome in college, but now, 4-6+ hours is a bit much.NickAragua wrote:Played a (6-hour) round of Descent: Journeys in the Dark as the Dungeon Master the other day. I also burnt out as the overlord with getting into situations like you describe where you're pretty much just stacking bodies in front of the players to slow them down. I want to actually be able to hurt players, not just give them more targets to chop in half without breaking a sweat. It's really anticlimactic to have the players arrive at the final room, read the description text, place the Giant Monster of Doom, and then have them kill it before it has a chance to move.
And yeah, way way way too many status effects. And the expansions added even MORE.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Just wanna rant about dice. FffffffUCK! I can tolerate them as a mechanic when they balance out over time. This goes in spurts for me: I'm usually a pretty average roller, but occasionally I go through periods where dice absolutely kill me dead. Played a 4- player game of summoner wars tonight that was so plagued by super-polarized dice throughout and extreme analysis paralysis and inattentiveness by one of the opposing team members. The game took about 3 hours and at the end I conceded out of sheer frustration. I love this hobby, but I find there are times I wish I had the time back. :l

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Introduced one buddy to Ticket to Ride which he absolutely went nuts for. He's going to buy a copy for his family. He narrowly beat me the first game with a longest route bonus, and he smoked me the second game when I drew a bunch of short routes and tried to win through quantity over quality. We had a great time though.
Then we broke out Elder Sign. I had heard people say that it was too easy, and unfortunately we found that to be true. We beat Azetoth (hardest boss in the game) on the first try and didn't even lose a single investigator. Maybe it was just dumb luck, but I'm going to have to do some research to see if there are some more challenging variants. Otherwise this one might go in my trade list.
Did not get to try out Defenders of the Realm today, but hope to get a session in tomorrow.

While I love the expansion, I do think that unless you substitute almost the entire base game with the new cards, you don't really see the corrupted elements come into play. I hope that the next expansion is set up to be a bit more intertwined with the base game.Daveman wrote:I don't mean to be a pusher, but Quarriors: Rise of the Demons is a great expansion. Yeah, with random distribution there are quite often Ignored Dice as they have little or no use.hepcat wrote:While I love the expansion, I do think that unless you substitute almost the entire base game with the new cards, you don't really see the corrupted elements come into play. OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Got to play my copy of Eclipse in a nice three player game. My players were a bit bowled over by the deceptive complexity. My Dad, who regularly games with us and enjoys Twilight Imperium, had a lot of trouble with the "fiddly" nature of the game (do this and then do that and some of the minute rules). My other player, who can be a bit of a handful at times, grasped the game rather well! That was a surprise, although he got waylaid by a lack of money and thus a lack of actions (he agreed that he should have focused on getting Orbitals ASAP).
I liked it... but it wasn't the TI killer I expected. It still took us 3-4 hours and felt less epic and more Agricola than TI. We had fun, but only had two battles between players. Certainly, this is part of learning the game, but it was more build up and less clash. I still want to play it, and 3 hours is far less than 8-9.
The real winner of x-mas was my Dad's copy of Risk Legacy. Yes, it is stock Risk - but the customization and novelty made it 100x more fun. The red star VP system made it an hour or less to play too. Can't wait to play again to open the secret packs!
Also got but didn't play Super Dungeon Explore. One comment for putting models together: Super Glue is your friend. No model glue, unless you like frustration and anger.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
It was a good week of gaming for me. Started off with teaching my wife how to play Ticket to Ride on Christmas night. I got her TtR:Nordic Countries for Christmas last year, and this was our first time to break it out. The good news is that she really enjoyed it, and wants to play again sometime. The bad news is that she beat me rather handily. Stupid ferries...
Then when I was down at my folks, I brought a bunch of games down with me and managed to get about 3 evenings of gaming in with my buddy Joe. First night we started off with Thunderstone, which he had never played (never played any kind of deck builder, for that matter). I had played it only twice before, and really enjoyed it, so I was glad to get this one under the tree this year. Had a good time with it, and Joe beat me in the one game we had time for.
Two nights later, Joe came by with his son, and we started off the evening with a game of Dungeon Run. They grasped the rules pretty quickly, and soon we were off. This game was odd in that out of the entire dungeon, only one of us ever found a treasure. Lots of encounters, no treasures. Joe's son came out on top pretty quickly playing the Necromancer dude...he had leveled up twice before either Joe or I could. Once the boss room was revealed, there was really no way Joe or I could stop him...but the true ignominy was that he stole one of my abilities from me during our final encounter and then used it to deliver the killing blow against me. Bastard.
After that we got in a game of the Star Trek Card Game, and for the first time, we actually completed a game! Every other time I've played this one, we ended up quitting because we ran out of time. This time around, despite my getting an upgraded ship early in the game, Joe hit the 400 point mark at about 2 hours into the game. I do like this game, but I do think it is way too long for a deckbuilder.
Then Friday night Joe came over and we broke out my copy of Eclipse. Did 2 player game, and it was a learning game for both of us, so it took us a bit of time to grasp the basic mechanic of the game, But by turn 3 we had it under control, and finished out the game in about 3 hours. And I have to say, with only one play under my belt, I am loving this game. I hope I can get in a game of this on Monday with Tommy and Stuart, see how it plays with 3 players. But I'll have it set up beforehand...save the set up time.

A Plano box really sped up my Eclipse setup. You could even get the Plano style box with removable chambers to dump the tech and rep tiles into their respective bags. I decided that I would only put ship component tiles on the mat once someone had unlocked them, to help players limit possible confusion. That worked well. Eclipse has a lot going on, particularly with ship upgrades. So the first game is a bit of a climb even for experienced players.
I forgot to mention that I got an iPad, so my downtime was spent playing the "cast iron bitch," Ghost Stories, on the iPad. It is glorious as an app! I hope they put the White Moon expansion as an app eventually. Also, Puerto Rico and Small World are fun automated.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
We got in a 3 1/2 hour game of Eclipse with 5 players, 2 who had never played before. As you ramp up players, territory rather than technology becomes a limiting factor.
This was hepcat's first game and he tied his hands by allying with me and his other neighbor, leaving him little room to expand. Our 5th player had played a lot and experimented with a new strategy that backfired when lost a few key battles against the ancients, leaving him with few options. Eventually, the other new player overran him entirely. Seppe tried to do the same against me by invading my home worlds after unlocking warp technology. I occupied the galaxy center, which offset most of the loss after I drew a 4-point VP tile for the battle.
We discovered that missiles with computer hit bonuses are nasty when the opponent has no shields. Eclipse is definitely a brain-burner with multiple players, but there's a lot of control over trade-offs and variability.
We played a game of Alien Frontiers and Nightfall. Hepcat introduced the idea of cycling through the Technology in Alien Frontiers to deprive your opponents. Nightfall is fun, and you need to be aware of what's happened in order to avoid piling on the same player too much. You need to spread the damage around to everyone, not just where there's an opportunity. The composition of the cards also influences how the game plays, we had a lot more spells than characters out.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
My only concern with Eclipse is that the two new players had two of the top 3 scores at the end of that game. Accidental wins worry me in a game like this. I think Dungeon Lords was the last game in which I saw that happen. It's too early to know if that was just pure dumb luck, you and Seppe being even more competitive than usual, or a game mechanic flaw. Hopefully it's just one of the two former reasons and not the latter.
...and p.s. I knew the reason you wanted to ally with me was because you didn't want anyone attacking you from my end of the map. After all these years of gaming, I know for a fact that you'll exploit new players in a heartbeat if it means a win for your sorry ass.
I miss playing Nightfall. When there's enough people playing, it just plays fast and fun...and is actually deeper than one would think from watching a game or two. You HAVE to bluff in the game though. If you even for one second let on that you haven't been attacked in a while, you will get your ass handed to you in the next player's turn if possible. Seppe kept his mouth shut and no one had any clue that he was winning until we counted wounds at the end. We were all surprised because he had kept such a low profile during the game.
As for Alien Frontiers, there are more than a few alien tech cards that if played for their discard abilities during the end game can turn the tide in a heartbeat. I like to grab them when I see them, and get rid of them before others can get them.

I have Dungeon Run on order, and I might go to my local store and pick up Memoir '44. That game never interested me before, but to be honest, I never really looked at it much. I watched a few videos, and the game really does look interesting, though.
Got a friend coming over in the morning. Gonna play a game or two of Star Trek Fleet Captains, then maybe a game of Ticket to Ride (the two of us and my two boys).

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
And the second expansion for Quarriors! has been revealed to me by someone that likes to feed my insanity:
40 New dice? Again, I haven't even played the original yet (but the tin looks nice on my desk) and I wants it.After an epic battle between Quaxos and the Three-Eyed Dragon of the Quarmageddon— the Quarmageddon is released upon us! The second expansion set to the Quarriors! dice-building game adds 40 new custom dice powering 6 new Creatures and 2 new Spells for you to bring a serious smack-down to the battlefield of hexahedron monster combat. Some battle-hardened Creatures come equipped with a new “Immunity” ability so they can laugh off whatever your opponents throw at you! No guts— no Glory!
This expansion set features an updated rulebook and a box that stores the expansion and base set.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I think I am torn between picking up either Mage Knight or Memoir '44 tomorrow.
Mage Knight looks pretty cool, though, and it supposedly can be played solo (which is always a big point for me). But Memoir '44 is pretty cool, too (been playing the online version). But that is another thing...I can play Memoir '44 online....
decisions to make when I go to the store tomorrow....

I haven't played Mage Knight, but I really do love me some Memoir '44. I've never had a game of Memoir '44 that I didn't really enjoy, even when I get my butt kicked!

New Years was an evening of edh Magic and Qwarriors, followed by a Nerf War to kick off the new year, followed by edh Magic, followed by another Nerf War, then Thunderstone and more Qwarriors. So far this year rocks

Before you put in that order for Mage Knight, be aware that Whizkids pulled another Star Trek Fleet Captains on the components. I took a look at the store copy at Chicagoland games Friday night and it's the same cheap cards that are in FC. I'm boycotting any further games by that company until they stop that crap. *hentzau wrote:I haven't played Mage Knight, but I really do love me some Memoir '44. Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Two-day gaming session at a buddy's over the weekend resulted in:
--an epic all-gates-closed win against Y'Golonac in Arkham Horror with the Kingsport Expansion. We hadn't played Arkham in close to a year and I don't remember ever having such a well-equipped, coordinated team before. Good stuff.
--a brutal human loss in BsG in which we (the humans) went into the last jump of the game with all resources in the blue against THREE cylons (7-player game), only to lose when a single centurion got onboard and the cylons used three consecutive turns to move him up the track while we failed 4 straight dice rolls at the armory to take it out. It felt pretty lame after a really well-played game by the humans.
--My first couple games of Seven Wonders - what a cool game. Came in close second in the first game, distant last in the second as I just built too many brown buildings early and got very little worth mentioning to actually spend those resources on. I can't wait to play this again.
uhhh, other stuff like Earth Reborn, etc. good times.

Also be warned regarding Mage Knight, from all reports the game is extremely rules heavy and complicated (like most of Vlaada's games).
