Q13 Fox
The Seattle Sounders FC said it would postpone its March 21 home match against FC Dallas in an effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
...
Meanwhile, the XFL Seattle Dragons said it would play its game March 15 at CenturyLink Field without any fans. Ticketholders would be getting refunds or a credit, the team said. The game will still be played and televised.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Maybe they can follow the path of the schools and go virtual... host a game of nba 2020 online(or whatever it’s called, I don’t do sports) or even better a VR basketball game!

Officially a bit more worried now. This is really huge and will have a cascading effect imo, I suspect it to be a tipping point. If you did not listen to Smoove and go ahead and grab essentials I suggest you do it asap. This was a billion dollar losing decision and not taken lightly. Within 8 hours you had the NCAA say they will not play in front of fans the 1st 2 rounds and then the entire NBA get cancelled.

Well, the NBA had no choice...if you now have to tell 6 teams to self-quarantine (Utah Jazz plus the 5 teams they played in the last 10 days), you can't really continue with the regular scheduled programming.morlac wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:29 pmOfficially a bit more worried now. Your missing the point. This is the first truly national/international cancellation that everyone can't ignore, downplay, etc. Personally/business wise I have already felt the impact of our 3 largest clients cancelling all face to face meetings/etc. This is the first thing to slap everyone in the face with the reality that shit just got real. You can't politicize this away. This will set panic in motion, guaranteed. Our economy is about to get train wrecked, schools are going to start massively closing, some businesses won't recover, etc. etc.gilraen wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:52 pmWell, the NBA had no choice...if you now have to tell 6 teams to self-quarantine (Utah Jazz plus the 5 teams they played in the last 10 days), you can't really continue with the regular scheduled programming.morlac wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:29 pmOfficially a bit more worried now. Me and Wife went to a sports bar last night where all the walls were blaring bouncyball because Yay Celtics. It was mostly empty, but Tuesday night so whatever. Now bouncyball is gone, and in another week or two, I gotta think restaurants will be closing, too.morlac wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:01 amYour missing the point. China shows 31 new cases in 24 hours.
South Korean shows 242 new cases.
But Europe is blowing up... 977 in Italy, 372 in France, 615 in Spain, 157 in Germany, 159 in Switzerland, and 172 in Denmark... (and I'm not counting anyone less than 100)
Iran is still gaining more than 10% a day at 881.
US is experiencing 50% in new confirmed cases at 224 (696 total now) and this is lagging by at least 24 hours.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
At the F1 race venue in Melbourne, Australia, there have been a reported five race team members (four from Haas) who have been put in isolated because of symptoms. Up till now it was planned for the races there to occur with some isolation of participants and support staff from the public. F1 management has previously stated that if any team loses too many members to be able to effectively support their race, the race will be cancelled. We'll probably find out in the next few hours.
Meantime the Indycar race in St Petersburg FL is still on. I haven't heard anything about NASCAR, but I suspect that means they are still planning on their races this weekend in Atlanta.

I think you are overreacting a bit. Golbert was almost certainly speaking it before he was symptomatic. This was going to happen anyway.Lorini wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:28 pmThey made the decision because the players are too stupid to do the right thing. Damn I'm pissed. That's because now that one major sports league has done it I expect more will follow. This is because we are going to see more confirmed cases and deaths before things settle, so there will be more pressure to suspend seasons in various leagues.
And even though they stand to lose millions (billions?) of dollars by cancelling games, they *still* decided there was enough of a risk from this virus to suspend the season.
That’s a big deal.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
Unfortunately in australia, we're entering change of season flus, rhino virus and other "flu" variants, so there may be that confusing the issue too. Unfortunately I see them all being quarantined after this race. I've had a sore throat, sniffle and cough since Sunday, but still working, taking precautions but only cause it's "common" cold. We have low circulation in our city (first case today). You won't even get tested here unless you've been overseas, or had contact with someone who has been overseas or is a close contact of a known case. The case definition is pretty strict.jztemple2 wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:17 am At the F1 race venue in Melbourne, Australia, there have been a reported five race team members (four from Haas) who have been put in isolated because of symptoms. Everyone will have to start cancelling events. At the very least because of liability and PR issues. They don't want to be known as the one organization who kept to schedule and ended up spreading the virus.morlac wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:01 amYour missing the point. Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
I'm still very angry with NBA player who licked microphones before being diagnosed with coronavirus, but the reason the NBA had to suspend the season is because of the number of teams said player came into contact with last weekend and the fact those players were asked to self quarentine. No players no NBA.
I think the suspension of a multibillion dollar industry will have more people understanding that the coronavirus is real and that it can and probably will affect your life or the life of people you know. I am going to be contacting the local Vons (who says they have delivery) to see how much it costs to get our groceries delivered to us.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
I turned on the local sports radio station this morning, which is also the flagship station for the Utah Jazz. They were playing an nationally syndicated Fox Sports show, instead of the two locals guys who have done mornings for the past 15 years.
Turns out, all of the on-air talent at the station had been in contact with Rudy Gobert, and now everyone is in a 14-day quarantine. They'll be doing nothing but national feeds for the next two weeks.
The entire Jazz team and staff are apparently still in quarantine at a hotel in OKC right now.
Seen elsewhere on the web: "Rudy Gobert is the undisputed Defensive Player of the Year. He just shut down the entire NBA." That gave me the lulz.

My university just called it. Classes go online-only starting this week. They'll re-assess in mid-April, but at that point there are only two weeks left in the semester.
Interestingly, students *are* allowed to return and stay in the dorms if they wish. There will be special health training and precautions in place. (This is probably to help international students afraid of being locked-out from returning if they leave the country.)

I work at a public library and part of my job is to maintain the ~40 PCs available for public use. I'm wondering how long it will be before they close libraries. I also wonder if I've already been exposed considering how many folks use those PCs...

Finally have seen the shelves stripped of toilet paper and pasta in my local Wegman’s in MA. Also, Goya black beans seem to be very popular. Luckily for us I stocked up on all these things a week ago.

Perhaps even more earth shattering is that the twins' school has canceled/postponed the "Breakfast with Books" event they had planned for tomorrow morning. At this point, pajama day is still untouched, however.

They should ban that player from the NBA, I'm sorry that's just too stupid for words. In other news, our local Vons has delivery service which we'll be using. We'd just bought a ton of toilet paper and there's only the two of us so we should be good. Because of my emphysema I've always had a ton of purell on hand for visitors, but threw away my disinfectant wipes unfortunately when we moved.

Suddenly being a solo gamer has value.
Suddenly being a solo gamer has value.
Take it from someone who’s dealt with disruptions before. You’re facing two challenges: shortages, which probably won’t be terrible; and isolation, which can be.
...
If you ask me, isolation is harder to cope with than any shortage. If we see widespread home-quarantining, and people forced to self-isolate for weeks to manage the spread of the virus, most of us are going to be distanced or alone for the first time in our lives. Kindness is going to matter more than ever.
If you do end up quarantined, your greatest enemy will be boredom.
I remember being trapped by a cyclone in a single room with three brilliant friends. We started out in high-minded discourse solving all the world’s problems, but twenty hours later we were reduced to debating whether Boutros Boutros Ghali or Kofi Annan was hotter. (Kofi, of course. Like it was even close.)
Things get silly – or serious – fast. You can either roll with it, or it will roll on you. Lighten up and you’ll make it through.
And be kind, even when you don’t feel kind. We’re all alone in this together.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Also on a more serious note since we have two presumptive cases in my town I just wanted to be set in case we have an inadvertent exposure in the family and are told to self-quarantine.

We had just bought some from Costco which should last us 3 months easy but if not, then ? Horrible 'reusable' toilet paper???LawBeefaroni wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:15 pmBecause it was reported that people are stocking up on TP. Sheep gonna sheep.

Stock up on what you actually need to survive and then find alternatives to whatever the sheep are putting out of stock. Napkins or Kleenex work fine as an emergency alternative. I'd rather be wiping my ass with dinner napkins than be starving atop a pile of bulk toilet paper.Lorini wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:17 pmBut honestly what else can you do? if people are going to hoard, you aren't going to magically have toilet paper when you need it right? With spring break coming up for most folks, what are thoughts on trips? Obviously flights for elective vacations should largely be nixed. In their place, what about road trips to low-population areas? Is it best to hunker down at home for the week, or is there a middle ground that's 'smart' and social-responsibility-conscious?

Cloth washcloths and a washing machine also work just fine.LawBeefaroni wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:32 pm Stock up on what you actually need to survive and then find alternatives to whatever the sheep are putting out of stock.
