His opening remarks when nominated politicized this from the get go.

There hasn't been a soap opera this good since Luke raped Laura, and then turned around and married her. If they really wanted to keep rolling with GH they'd have had a ffm thing with Laura & Leslie and somebody without a perm.

I honestly don't know why the GOP is going through with a show. They're dead set that this guy is passing. He could walk in, flip everyone the finger, moon the press, sit down with a beer in hand, and McConnell would stand to applaud him.

Well it's just started, but apparently it's so Chuck Grassley has a chance to look as dickish, condescending, and hostile as possible in his opening remarks.

Well, given that opening statement by Grassley, it's no wonder why they got someone else to question ford.

You've got to admit, that would be pretty bad ass.

I believed her already.... but I just wanna say that Ford is looking to be amazingly credible.

And her story sounds entirely real.

I also believe her.

There's really nothing the GOP can ask except to try and nitpick tiny details to make it look mis-remembered, but I don't think they'll be able to sway anything about this with any significance.

*Edit: How is asking for copies so they can follow along being "rudely interrupted" ... ??

I think he was making a joke about his intern, or something. Everyone laughed, from what I could see.

Grassley, however, should shut up. He keeps on coming off as a jerk.

Mitchell, on the other hand, is acting very professionally, IMO (at least, she doesn't come off as attacking her in any way), but she hasn't been very effective in terms of trying to discredit the story, just in fleshing out a few details to the incident.

On Fivethirtyeight, it was also pointed out how the five minute intervals hurt her ability of gaining any momentum.

If this moment isn't listed in future history books as a flashpoint in American culture and society, I will be amazed. I honestly cannot believe what I'm hearing and seeing today. How they continued with all this after Dr. Ford's opening statement is unreal.

If the GOP moves forward with the nomination after this, they really will have given up any pretense of decency. Ford's testimony was searing-- she was brave, emotional, powerful. I'm guessing the GOP is regretting holding this hearing, but maybe I'm seeing this all through sympathetic eyes. I'm guessing republicans saw her testimony differently.

And hiring a prosecutor to basically cross-examine her and try to catch her in a lie? So shameful. She's a victim, not a criminal. And if they goal was to get to the facts, order an investigation and subpoena other witnesses.

It's insane that Ford has had to go through this, but I'm glad that she didn't shirk from the moment.

Same here. This is big history we are watching - with either direction it goes. Her opening statement and even her answers to all the questions... I can't imagine this nomination still going forward, and I keep being told "Oh, it's going forward".

This. I'm caught wondering whether their intention was to catch Ford in a lie, or to move the focus off of the actual R Senators in terms of who's doing the 'hard' questioning (it's election season, after all). Either way, it's true that if their goal was to actually get to the truth, this is not the forum for that. They opted to nuke that option in favor of rushing to a vote.

Is Mitchell trying to discredit Ford by referencing Ford's fear of flying and then listing Ford's air travel? She obviously doesn't have PTSD because of travel to exotic locales? What the fuck?

Wow, the questioning by mitchell has gotten a little bizarre. Especially going after her fear of flying? Is this really the best use of her five minutes?

Boy, Grassley sure likes to interject between each speaker with any straw he can grasp to potentially say that his oversight hasn't been #Barkleyturrible. Doesn't come off very well.

I think this was premature, given all the absurd questions "Did you fly to arrive here?", "Why did you seek a lawyer?", "Where did you take the polygraph?"

I mean, it wasn't so much an attack the way Grassley comes off, but it seems irrelevant and/or unprofessional.

Kavanaugh is toast.

I’ve only been listening for the last 25 minutes or so, but it seems like all of Mitchell’s questioning goes to process issues (when did you come forward, when did you retain counsel, did you know the committee was willing to come to you in CA, why did you take a polygraph, etc, etc).

None of this goes to to the credibility of her allegations. This is really weak, weak stuff.

Maybe there were some tougher more substantive questioning earlier, but if this is the best the Republicans have, it’s not at all impressive.

I agree with everyone who has opined that Ford comes off as credible and sincere. She’s also very likeable. Doesn’t cone across as any kind of zealot.

I think the Republicans are going to regret this hearing.

Or this was a way to rip the bandaid. Look a sex crimes prosecutor says she's telling the truth... Now we think it's a good idea to abandon Kavanaugh. And we don't have to wait for an investigation, or listen to any other women, or take responsibility for creating this shit show.

Tadaa! Look Barret's a woman vote her in next week!
