Just saw Bob Weir and Jay Lane and Rob Wasserman do a nice 3 man acoustic set at a small club in town. Nice to hear some old acoustic Dead tunes in a small venue.

If anyone in or around Denver wants to meet up, give me a holler.
Bring some really good earplugs. Preferably ones that block out sound entirely. :P

She's hot, but their music is epic levels of awful.
in all fairness, i wouldn't say that particular song (which is pretty horrible) is characteristic of most of their music. their most recent album is a bit heavier than their earlier stuff and does have her screaming quite a bit, but their earlier stuff is more melodic hard rock/metal where she shows that she actually has a very good voice (with some screaming on the first album). i have their second album, The Dream, from 2008 and it's pretty damn good in my opinion...showcases Maria's voice from start to finish and she doesn't scream once that i can remember. that song you linked really is just about the worst thing they've released in my opinion, and i have no idea why they chose it as the lead single for their latest album last year. give the rest of their music a listen and i think you'll have a much different opinion of the band.

i'll even give a few better examples to save anyone else the trouble of looking them up...

ya the newer stuff with the screaming constantly is pretty bad.

smaller venue and i'm gonna try and make my way to the front and hope for a nice upskirt :)

That didn't help much. ;) In This Moment does nothing for me at all, and I'm even typically a fan of the metal/female vocalist combination (i.e. Draconian, Epica, Nightwish, Sirena, etc). And WTF was with the bad romance novel video (the one with with the horse)?

But I'm just giving Xmann a hard time. I'm sure most of the board would find about 95% of my music to be completely unlistenable.

bleh.....snowy/cold night in Denver. not going out to see a questionable show in this mess.

next potential show is All That Remains in a couple weeks. i like their new album, but i couldn't bare to sit through Buckcherry, who is the headliner. might leave before Buckcherry comes on stage.

Laurie Anderson tonight and local noise metal tomorrow. What a strange weekend combo. (Though I may bail on the noise metal and see how the Detroit Fire Guild thing pans out)

The summer months of Febraury and march are beginning to come together strong than I would have anticipated, though I'm not sure how much I'm doing.

I'm debating George Clinton because I've always wanted to see him/them. 2/10
I'm debating Emilie Autumn if there is more of her actual musical performance rather than just a gothic version of Brittany Spears... Or whoever the modern singer dancer is. Ke$ha? *shrug* 2/17
I'm debating Motorhed and Clutch because I've never seen Clutch and the show is only $10.11 2/23
The dropkick still could happen 2/24
I'm curious about the dumdum girls 2/25

Too many weeknight shows for me to think about all of them and expense may knock a few out of the running as well.

Announcements are beginning to pick as well and there are going to be some local shows/activities that I'm sure I'll want to keep an eye out for.

What was good was really good. What was, um... avant garde, not so much my thing. She does a great thing where she puts her voice and violin through delayed loop and does this sort of cannon like thing with just her keyboard and violin sounds like a full array of instrumentation where she sings a sort of two part harmony with herself. And the Quinn in us enjoyed that one of her stories was about The Corporation.

As I sit hear at lunch I'm sort of reflecting on a story she did about mothers and daughters and identities and the handing down of surnames and our most valued secret being our mother's identity. So for the moment at least, she's left more of an impression than I originally thought.

I picked up tickets yesterday to see Coheed and Cambria in April. They're doing The Second Stage Turbine Blade in its entirety, an acoustic set, and then a random bonus set. No opening bands. They were amazing the last time they were in town. I'm pumped.

I've got them on my list of maybe's. Tell me more about their live set. :D Otherwise, I'm sure the night will come and go and I'll ultimately "meh" them. I don't know much about their music, even. Don't even own an album but they've been getting great reviews for a few years, while not actually saying much about said review.

I'm still waiting for the spring announcements to really start rolling. Concert season usually starts in March and the announcements for must shows post St Patty's day usually start rolling in in February.

Current list of maybes:

derby girls Sat 1/29/2011
george clinton Thu 2/10/2011
Emile Autumn Thu 2/17/2011
motorhead/Clutch Wed 2/23/2011
Dropkick murphys Thu 2/24/2011
dum dum girls Fri 2/25/2011
Flogging Molly Thu 3/3/2011
the pogues and Titus Andronicus Fri 3/4/2011
Parlotones Fri 3/11/2011
Dave Mason Sat 3/12/2011
Lords of Acid Sun 3/13/2011
Reverend Horton Heat/Peyton Sun 4/24/2011
coheed and cambria Fri 4/29/2011
cake Wed 5/18/2011

I'm getting more than a little annoyed at the amount of weeknight shows as opposed to weekend shows. It's part of why I've maybeing and mehing so much. Show prices seem to be going up and if you add that to weeknight shows, it gets easy to be all curmudgeony.

Saw The Killigans on Saturday at the Sailor Jerry Pinup Pageant held at a local pub. My wife was entered in the pageant so we got into the show for free (not to mention two free drinks each).

They're a local (well, from Lincoln) punk-Irish band that has a sound somewhere between Flogging Molly and Korpiklaani.

I meant to pick up a CD or two of theirs but we ended up leaving early and I forgot to swing by the table on the way out. Good thing their stuff is available online.

The Kills
Eddie Spaghetti
Iron and Wine

Ooooo and Taylor Swift.

Actually, has anyone seen Eddie Spaghetti's solo country stuff? Is it worth the night out for?

Found out Miss Pussykatt and the Daredevil Dolls are performing at the Flight Club on Thursday. While not a concert, it's something I am suddenly really looking forward to. She does some of the best fetish type work I've seen and she's always adding something new to the act. If geekshows are your kink then this is for you. Don't miss it. Even though she's a Michigander, she usually only makes it out to the east side of the state for a small act during Theatre Bizarre.

I've never seen Eddie solo live but I've heard a few bootlegs. I like it and would like to see him sometime...it is my opinion the Supersuckers are done so it may be the only way to see him.

Finally some shows to be excited about....

Steel Panther in March
Death Angel/Lazarus AD in April

Tetering on the idea of the Mayhem Festival in July. Would love to see Megadeth, Machine Head, and Trivium. But Disturbed and Godsmack are awful.

Blob Segar looks like he's going on tour and doing "smaller" arenas at $70 a head. Tickets go on sales for a bunch of vneues like Toledo, Grand Rapids, and Saginaw on Friday. I'm tempted at $70 if I can get killer seats.

Man, I'm jealous...I've heard AA tears shit up live.

I'm really bummed that the two "Viking Metal" bands I would kill to see - Amon Amarth and Turisas - are both skipping Salt Lake on their current tours. Traveling to a concert these days (even a quick trip to Denver) is simply out of the question money-wise right now. :(

Rush is playing just north of Portland this summer.

Reserved seats are $70 each. I've never seen them and I'm going back and forth on buying tickets.

I'm a moderate Rush fan - I really liked Caress of Steel back in high school (I have no idea why that album was my favorite, it just was) and I'm familiar with their more popular (read older) albums.

Any input from non-fanatic Rush fans? Worth going?

This Sunday is Cake. I haven't seen them in years. I can't wait.

I finally caved and bought tickets to see The Corin Tucker Band on the 24th. They're the second band in a three band bill at a small club.

I like Rush quite a bit, but don't really qualify as a fanatic. I've seen them a few times in concert, and they put on a fantastic show - they remember to keep the spectacle in arena rock. That said, I've kind of given up on crazy expensive concerts, and I don't know if I'd fork over $70 (plus whatever fees they're adding) to see anyone right now.

The hype that I keep seeing for Cake's Showroom album everywhere has me a little scared. I don't plan on buying a ticket until March 4th when I'm at the Pogues show and I fear they're going to sell out before I get my ticket.

I've never seen them so I'm really looking forward to it... In May.

So far there's something almost every night coming up but very few things I'm prioritizing. Nothing is kicking my ass with I must see it. March usually starts concert season but right now my only must sees have the asterisks. Everything else, is sort of a game time decision and largely will be no go's based on being on week nights or apathy or the need to do stuff around the house/play games.

Cake will sell out. Don't wait until you're at ROMT to get tix if you really wanna see them. They've sold out a 4-night stand at the Troubadour this weekend...I realize Detroit isn't L.A. but people are going apeshit over the fact that they are touring again...

Which is all strange to me. I should get tickets ahead of time but I get so offended by outrageous service charges that I just can't do it... Hence no Clutch for me. The good news is that tickets have been on sale since before Christmas and they haven't sold out yet. The bad news (for me) is that every time I turn around someone is pimping the new album. If they sell out, I'll be bummed but even that won't break my heart, if it weren't a Wednesday show, I'd probably feel different.

Yep, I've lost a lot of enthusiasm for middle of the week shows, even local ones. Plus it's too cold to leave the house after dark these days.

Just booked our room last night for the Pogues. So we're getting stoked for that. And I shall put on Rum, Sodomy right now! It's the best drinkin' album ever!

The Corin Tucker Band opened for Versus last night at the Doug Fir. It was a great, great show.

After their set I went back to the merchandise booth to pick up the CD but it was empty. Later a friend mentioned he had seen someone there so I made my way back to the booth...

He failed to mention that Corin Tucker was the one selling stuff.

I got the CD signed and picked up a T-shirt too.

I'm going to miss Flogging Molly this time around for the first time since I got single in 03 but the Freep did a great write up on them. I hate to be one of them but FM has gotten to be too pop(ular) for me. Their music has both "matured" in a direction that I've liked less (for Float anyway) and their shows gotten so big that that the crowd turns me off, the lack of personality that a larger venue gives you turns me off and I really dislike the five minute wait for $8 plus tip beer at the Fillmore which is acoustically or soundboard horrible, I don't know which.

I still love the band and their attitude, though and I hope one day I luck in to seeing performing a spontaneous out of the blue night at the Gaelic League.
