We barely eat anything. I haven't had 3 meals a day in 10 years. In a day I drink 2 - 4 colas. Eat some chips, couple cookies, and one item,,,soup or a sandwich or the like. No meals at all. Wife is the same. Yet food takes a bunch of our money.

Stop drinking 2-4 colas a day and drink water instead. Bills will go down and health will go up. Win/win.Daehawk wrote:We barely eat anything. I haven't had 3 meals a day in 10 years. Re: Random randomness
(Same generation, I turned 18 in '75) I was never charged rent, and in fact my parents wanted me to live with them until I was 20 so that I could save money for real college while attending two years of junior college. The pain point was "as long as you live under my roof, you follow my rules." As a newly minted adult I didn't, and it was a constant source of irritation for everyone. Couldn't wait to get out on my own...but, as has been frequently noted, our norms were different.Giles Habibula wrote:Word.Paingod wrote:... Nothing drives a kid out faster than paying the exact same amount to stay at home as they would if they were out by themselves.
For my 18th birthday (1978), my father handed me $100, and then told me that from now on, I would be paying $100 per month to keep living there. All the old rules still applied, including the 11:00 curfew.
Those who grumble about their layabout Millennials aren't making laying about unpleasant enough, I betcha. Probably didn't have a lot of onerous rules to begin with, so it's hard to lay them down now.

I think that's so true. I'm on the tail end of GenX and my wife is an "Old" Millennial (apparently the advent of smart phones divides them into "Young" and "Old" with "Young" being the worst of the lot). It does seem like there's a lot of missing character that should have developed at a young age by means of rules, standards, chores, and work. They are very much a product of what their parents allowed them to become. Trying to toss them out after 18 years of apathetic parenting doesn't fix anything.Kraken wrote:Those who grumble about their layabout Millennials aren't making laying about unpleasant enough, I betcha. Is it wrong that my daughter doesn't turn 5 until the 25th of this month yet I'm already daydreaming about the future when she is old enough to do actual chores and I get to lounge on the desk sipping an ice cold beer while she mows the lawn?

She tried that "you're not the boss of me" line once already. It ended up with her in her room for 4 minutes and her favorite two dolls on top of the refrigerator for 2 days. Sure boss, I'll redo this entire damn report package that took 2 weeks to pull together. You explicitly signed off on the final format 3 weeks ago, but yeah sure, we can add in that "just one extra thing" that will make us rerun all the numbers from the start again.

I did some quick checking, and the $5.63 she spent was the equivalent of $45.75 today. At a discount store you could get everything but the meat for that. It would have been cheaper, but not by a ton.Daehawk wrote:
And I think there was one other boxed item I couldn't make out in the kids buggy ....maybe cereal....and the total was $5.63!!!!!
I fuss about this a lot. Seems cheap compared to wages. If that was today then minimum wage should be like $20 an hour or more. Looking at the wage back then it was $1.15 an hour.

Re: Random randomness
Found this in my spam folder today.
My Dear Beloved Friend,
Greetings. Please let this not sound strange to you because I am not asking you of money, for my only surviving lawyer who would have done this died early this year. I prayed and got your email address from your countrys guest book which I have been with my late husband and I wish to visit once more if God will in his infinite mercies grant me. In function of your good profile, I want to solicit your assistance in the discharge of my will. I am Mrs. Susan Read from London and am aged 65 years suffering from endometrial cancer. Please, I want you to help me create a charitable project with the money that I inherited from my deceased husband who died in a motor accident. I was brought up from a motherless baby's home and was married to my late husband for twenty nine years without a child.
My friends have plundered so much of my wealth since my illness and I cannot live with the agony of entrusting this huge responsibility to any of them anymore, so I sold all my inherited belongings and deposited all the sum of 9m Pounds with my bank. All I need is an honest person who will use at least %60 of the funds as I instructed, then the rest %40 will go to you for helping me accomplish this mission because donating this money to charity is the only legacy I can leave behind after my death. No money is required from you to carry on with this project because it is my heart desire to make a generous gift to you to work for a charity in your country, I don't mind if you are a Christian or Muslim
but I dont know if I can trust you because there are greedy and fraudulent people over the world. I will give you more details as soon as I hear from you.
Looking forward for your urgent response.
Regards.
Mrs. Susan Read.
That poor person. Seriously if they ever get a English speaker to write those things they may get rich.

Lately I've noticed more and more scammers and telemarketers spoofing phone numbers in my area code. Probably makes their marks much more likely to answer if it looks like a local call.

OTOH, the last couple of "Citizen, an arrest warrant will be issued in your name if you do not immediately return this call to arrange payment of your delinquent taxes" calls that I received used spoofed numbers with a Washington DC area code.Kraken wrote:Lately I've noticed more and more scammers and telemarketers spoofing phone numbers in my area code. I've even had a call that spoofed my own number. It came from inside the house!

It was *almost* a local area code (I'm in the Denver metro area, and the area code was for the mountains/Western slope) - not sure if it was spoofed.
Edit: ah, found more details on the T-Mobile page.

Not a big fan of the Walmart brand cheese puffs and such products . Something about the cheese isn't that great. But found them in jalapeno flavor and decided to try that. Damn good! Same old bad cheese but its covered up mostly by the hot jalapeno. Its very tasty but hot.

If I'm not mistaken, it's an English language remake of a fantastic Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, which stars the insanely talented Stellan Skarsgard and is still available to stream on Netflix. I highly recommend it.

With the original listed as a "Comedy" where a snowplow driver sparks a war between a vegan mobster and a Serbian mafia boss over his son's death, Leam's version sounds initially a bit darker, where he plays a plow truck driver that employs a particular set of skills to avenge his son's death at the hands of drug dealers.hepcat wrote:If I'm not mistaken, it's an English language remake of a fantastic Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, which stars the insanely talented Stellan Skarsgard and is still available to stream on Netflix. Re: Random randomness
Trust me, it's not a straight out comedy. It does have touches of dark humor, but it's not laugh out loud funny (except for a final, hilariously dark scene that comes out of nowhere). If anything, I doubt the English language remake will be as dark as the original. I also doubt it will be anything but a pale imitation. But I'd love to be proven wrong.
I suggested it a while back in the thread dedicated to Netflix movie recommendations. It really is a fantastic little film.
p.s. "Hard Powder"? Seriously? Whoever came up with that title should be barred from writing another line for the rest of their life.
