Seventh-grader Lizeth Villanueva has been in her school’s academic honors program for two years. She gets good grades and has never been a discipline problem. Yet on Tuesday, her teacher gave her a “most likely to become a terrorist” award.
It was supposed to be a joke, part of a mock end-of-the-year awards ceremony at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Channelview, Tex., near Houston, where a group of teachers hand certificates to students. Lizeth, 13, said her teacher “just laughed” when she signed and handed her the certificate, just one day after the Manchester arena terrorist attack in Britain.
But Lizeth’s mother Ena Hernandez didn’t find the award funny at all.
...
Lizeth, who is Salvadoran American, wasn’t laughing either. Her emotion was one of shock, she said.
She said two honors classes were brought together for the fake ceremony. Other awards included “most likely to cry for every little thing” that was given to a girl and “most likely to become homeless” that was presented to a boy.
The three other teachers in the room laughed when the awards were handed out, according to Lizeth.
Channelview Independent School District spokesman Mark Kramer told KPRC the awards were a “poor attempt to poke fun” and it “wasn’t well thought out.”
Hernandez said the principal Eric Lathan personally apologized during a meeting at the school.
In a statement the school district said:
“The Channelview ISD Administration would like to apologize for the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students in a classroom. Channelview ISD would like to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are not representative of the district’s vision, mission and educational goals for our students.
“The teachers involved in this matter have been disciplined according to district policy and the incident is still under investigation.”

The Reaper is no longer #1 though, there's a new pepper called Dragon's Tongue or something like that.

Re: Random randomness
When I was a lad, one of my coworkers used to periodically bring in a pepper or some hot sauce and dare us "If you're a REAL MAN, you'll put just a drop of this (or a single seed, if it was a pepper) on your tongue." I had to prove my manhood again and again when I was 16 or 17. Of course one tried to suppress the pain to deny him satisfaction. I don't think any of his samples were on that list, though; the capsaicin breeding race is a more recent phenomenon.MHS wrote:I have video of a co-worker's son and husband eating Carolina Reapers. Re: Random randomness
I know I bitch too much about my health (sorry) but what really pisses me off is that my stupid kidneys affect everything else so much. Lab results came back today and while my kidney function is remaining somewhat stable (currently still Stage 4 with 23% function remaining, <20% function needed to be on the transplant list), my triglycerides have gone waaaay up, from 85 2 years ago to 210 last year to 564 today. My diet and weight haven't changed significantly in the last 2 years, nor my eating habits. But as my kidneys fail, my creatnine gets higher, and the creatnine breaks down muscle tissue, and something in that chemical breakdown causes the triglycerides to go through the roof. I guess it's normal...someone in Stage 4 or 5 kidney disease basically should be treated with the same level of heart care as someone who has already had a heart attack since the things that come along with the failing kidneys (high blood pressure, high triglycerides) are also things that will eventually cause a heart attack. It just pisses me off. I try to do things right, I try to take decent care of myself and it just seems like none of it matters and more shit just falls apart at every turn. My dad wasn't a candidate for a transplant because of his heart disease and diabetes and he died at 57. I always thought I'd be ok because I had NO health problems other than the kidney disease, but now everything is going to shit and I'm scared I'll follow the same path as my dad. Stupid body. Stupid kidneys.

A package arrived today from Similac addressed to my first wife containing several large canisters of powdered baby formula.
This is confusing for several reasons: she passed away almost six years ago and the youngest child in the house is about to turn twelve.
Um, thanks, I guess?

Im just getting older and closer to death. I never noticed things when I was young that I notice now that Im older. I feel and see myself dying. I have less left to my life than I used to. Yes everyone is in that same boat. But it sure bothers me these days. I need to change..to get back into life. Just dont have the gumption. In my 20s and even 30s Id drive 30 miles to the mall twice a week and it was nothing to me. Felt like nothing. Looked forward to it. Loved it. Now if I have to go to the store once a week or less and drive 3 miles its a chore. I dread it. I dont sleep well the night before. Im like a Jekyll / Hyde. I once loved the life I lived but now I sit and watch it all go past me. I wish I did what I did then. I want to. I plan to. Then I dont because I dont want to. Damn.

Welcome to olde age.
You also find out you have no stamina. When I mow the back yard I can only do one or two laps and I have to rest for a few minutes. Buying (lots of) groceries and unloading them works the same way.
Also in my case heat does me in. 70 degrees is too warm. Wears me out fast.
If I had enough money I'd hire people to do things for me but I don't. So I exist. Not wanting to live but not wanting to commit suicide either.

Why do they keep pouring alcohol into someone who is totally drunk? They do this and expect no problems?

Re: Random randomness
I've felt like my trajectory turned downward since I turned 60. First cool and rainy weather kept me from doing my daily walk -- I get antsy when I can't exercise. Then the flu and bronchitis imposed a couple more weeks of idleness. Now my legs are massively messed up from poison ivy, further keeping me on the sidelines. After six weeks with no real exercise I'm turning into a no-energy puddle of fat. And once you make that turn, it's really hard to go back to a healthier routine (and a better outlook).dbt1949 wrote:Welcome to olde age.

Usually putting in my garden is one of the major joys of the beginning of summer. This year I deliberated not doing it at all. I finally persuaded myself to plant a scaled-back version, and I've set aside most of this weekend to get started...but I have no enthusiasm for it. It's just another chore that's taking me away from my other chores.
Everything feels like a chore nowadays. I hope I can turn that around after I get the garden in and my legs recover, but I suspect that some other damned thing will come along.

I sort of understand what a few of you are going through. I'm 46 now, and definitely hard physical chores (and heavy mental lifting too) hit me a little harder than they used to 20 years ago. More stuff have become 'chores' that used to be simple. I have two game projects at 75-80% finished that I find little enthusiasm to actually complete at the moment. Middle age blues maybe? Ugh.dbt1949 wrote:Welcome to olde age.

Helped my stepson set up his wifi extender.
Now my wifi doesn't work. Started off with the password that didn't work and went down hill from there.
Tried a new router but it doesn't work either. I think it is broke. It can't find my dsl.
Now I've hooked up my laptop with a 40' ethernet cable.
His wifi extender won't work now either.
I spent 6 hours troubleshooting this. To no avail.
It's true. No good deed goes unpunished.

If I had one golden guideline for business, it would be:
>Set expectations and stick to them whenever possible.
>It's OK to set an expectation of "I can't set the expectation you need now. Let me give you an update on X."
>If you cannot meet expectations, as soon as you know this, gather details and set new expectations.
This seems to the unicorn at the end of the rainbow, I'm chasing.

Re: Random randomness
In reference to my above post and the router password be inaccessible. My stepson comes over today and says he has the Medialink customer service rep on the line.
When I had checked on Medialink before they had changed names and their business models so I didn't figure they'd be of any help.
He had found a phone number for their customer service. The guy had an Indian accent. Every Indian accented person I have talked to in the last 5-6 years has been a scammer.
So I am leary about this guy but I go along with him because of my stepson. He loads a program into my computer to take control of it. <shudder> Then he says he has to wait for his supervisor. I watched the screen and didn't see anything happening.
His supervisor comes on and wants to go to my email. So I did. I didn't have to type any password tho.
Then he notices I have an Amazon account. He asks about it. My stepson says no we don't have one. The guy goes to it anyway. He asks again about it and my stepson says we're not going to give him information about any account and if he keeps pushing he will report him.
The Indian guy hangs up and on my screen types fuck you.
So I've been busy making sure his program taking over my computer is gone and changing passwords.
I'm having a hard time not shooting him. I'm also having a hard time not shooting his mother for having him.
PS The scammer was using something called GoAccess
