It's kinda weird to see a locomotive trucking along at speed with nothing behind it.

Those are hobby cars. You don't want one unless you're a mechanic, or friends with one. They're a blast to drive when they run, though.

Apparently there are now "reusable paper"... There's "water erasable" pages that can be wiped off with wet rag (when used with Pilot Frixion pens), and there are pages that can be "microwaved" up to 5 times to erase the ink (same Pilot Frixion pens).

I needed to stock up on some Naproxen Sodium (i.e. Aleve) and turns out Costco's prices are insane, even with Amazon markup. 400 caplets for like $12. That's HALF the price of Target or such. When I needed some to tide me over, my local supermarket was selling 50 for $5.

It is such a royal pain in the ass to get rid of an air conditioner in the sticks. The best I've been able to find is a place about 85 miles from here from that will charge me to take it.

Now I know why the Indiana woods are full of air conditioners.

My cousin is bush hoggin the yard for me. It was up to my chest in places. My lawnmower broke 3 years ago. The first year we paid someone to mow it. Then for the next the church mowed it. Then for the last of last year and early this year I had to weedeat the entire yard. But Ive been sick an unable to get to it and it just grew up. the county hogged the ditch but the yard has just been growing. Guess he saw it when he passed and stopped with the tractor and hog. Those things cut really GOOD. Much lower than I remember from a kid on the farm.

Nice guy my cousin. I dont even have money for his diesel. :( Maybe this will last until cold weather and I can weedeat it once before Christmas.

You try to save any money around here and stuff pops up. The part that broke is the front axle cowl. Its all plastic. $80...for THAT! A new self propelled is $200 on craigs list. Stuff is just beyond us these days. I do have a hedge trimmer so I can cut my own hedges :)

So embarrassing. Wife hates me typing on here about personal stuff but you guys can understand this stuff. Next month I can get a hair cut for $12 or put that away towards the part...but then the car will break or something in the house will need replacing...or gas will go up. Grrrrr.

Never talk tough to your wife then pour a packet of Pizza Hut red pepper flakes out in your palm and stick your tongue to it. HOT

I like hot stuff so I've always been the tough one in our house especially around my sons when they were younger. It backfired when I accidentally dumped an entire packet of hot pepper flakes on one slice of pizza at my son's birthday party. I've had hotter but the heat combined with the dryness was not good.

Saw Ghost in the Shell yesterday. I thought it was going to be an action movie. Instead of which it was an android with identity problems.

That movie name has always been cool to me since I was a kid. But what I saw as a kid was something that always disappointed me. Maybe cause it was such a jumbled mess to me. If it had been a ghost inside a computer I would have been fine with it.

Motherpussbucket. Made the mistake of opening FB on a Monday morning and GoTs spoilers abound. It's time to put people on temporary block until they and their freinds can get this shit out of their systems. I should have started temp axing people week 1.

Praise be to the Pancake we have separate threads here, where I can avoid spoilers until such a time as I can watch this season.

They post their reactions the night of and FB cycles them into my morning feed. This season has been the worst, though I've been pretty good about skipping Mondays once I saw what I was in for. I was too tired to skip the ritual of opening the page this morning and too stupid to close it out after seeing the first two GoT non spoiler vaguebook reactions.

Really, what I need to do is temp block about three to five minor violators, who in turn, have other friends that are serious violators that I react the minor violators, until the season is done.

I guess it's the price I pay for not having HBO, but [Hank Hill]I tell you wut[/Hank Hill] I'm tempted to go see movies on preview night and post spoilers on the walls of said friends and all their spoliery friends to see. Like major ones, say DeadPool 2... I'm not gonna do it, but the passive aggressive dickhead in me wants to.

The same people do it for The Walking Dead. Only I don't watch TWD.

That's the next wave, usually pictorial images with a pun or faux-karma about some character dying or another. I've already blocked someone for a month for posting one of those images.

Amazon shilling of fake reviewers (often bots) are used to prop up lame vendors.

I just wanted to see how sucky the stuff are, and Fakespot (who, surprisingly, charges you for convenience) found a vendor with 100% unreliable reviews which is pretty darn amazing.

I rely heavily on Amazon's "Verified Purchase" note for reviewers. I take any unverified review with a bucket of salt.

But that means I have to go outside to get it! Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it, to have a delivery guy?

I can make the trip from my front step to a car to save the $5 tip on an $8 pizza. I already make the drive to avoid that tip because I'm a cheapass bastard.

I just saw an old 80s game show being streamed on Twitter...Starcade..1982-1984. Two contestants answered arcade machine questions then picked an arcade game to play for points. At the time I was about 13 and lived in my arcades. I was actually answering all the questions right. Funny I remember the early 80s but not yesterday. Anyways I thought back then it was cool. Seeing it now its pretty cringy and the host didn't really seem to know what he was talking about or even wants to be there. The prizes were dang cool though. Easy prizes like electronic chess and such. The big prize this ep was a full arcade cabinet of Q-Bert.

Watching those 2 play the games all I could think was "THEY SUCK!" lol. I could have embarrassed them.

I was browsing through random Youtube videos when I came across the Japanese anime "Gate". a sorta military fantasy.

To make a long story short: a dimensional gate suddenly popped up in middle of Ginaza, Japan, and roman-type armored soldiers as well as ogres and others appear through the gate, attacking everything in sight. One off-duty SDF soldier Itami was instrumental in evacuating civilians and manage to put them behind defensible walls before SDF deployed in strength to contain the chaos. The Japanese Diet decided to send through an SDF expeditionary force to check it out.

TL;DR -- modern weaponry against a medieval army, dragons, and a little magic. It's no match at all. A couple howitzers and 50K men were annihilated. Dragons? Pfft against gunships and fighters, or even flak cannons. Charging knights on horseback? Hah, they can't even beat a jeep with a mounted .50.

Of course, SDF is like all for peace, we'll beat you but we'll ask you nicely to stop attacking us (by annihilating your armies). Some of the battlescenes are cute.

If I want that kind of fiction, I think I'll go read "The March Upcountry" series again (by John Ringo)

Give them a break. It was 1982, and everyone involved was coked up to their eyeballs.

I'm so tempted to write an author with the definition of "decimate".

So far Terry Brooks has used it incorrectly twice.

Not sure which offended me more, when he mentioned that the druids were almost decimated when they were all killed, except two.... Seems like that is a lot more than 1 out of 10....

Then he says a village was decimated when every single person was killed. Perhaps he's never heard of "eradicated"?

An author should know better....

I think "decimate" has been misused enough to have fully acquired the new meaning. Other words have done the same.

Yeah, the dictionary definition is to destroy a large portion/percentage. Doesn't get much larger than 100%.

Granted, except that decimate suggests that at least part remains. I think once you make that step from 99% to 100% you have moved beyond decimate. To decimate a population, there does still need to be something remaining.

And I'll admit that I was originally thinking decimate was the opposite, killing 9 out of 10. I was surprised when I looked it up and found it was 1 out of 10. So even I'm guilty of moving towards a new definition. However, I do still know the distinction between all and most. Also, apparently he thinks it only means 100%.

That's fair and that's what I picture when someone says the word - some small remaining part shivering in the cold.
However, I do still know the distinction between all and most. Also, apparently he thinks it only means 100%.
Just to be argumentative, in your first example there were 2 survivors. :)

But note that in my first example he clearly stated that they were NOT decimated.... Had he said they were decimated, I would have been fine with it. But when he said they were almost decimated, it completely pull me out of the story. I was all "Wha??? Were there only 3 to begin with???" I agree, it seemed like a clear case of decimation for me.
