I was blown away - and not just because it was by far the loudest concert I've ever been to. I've been to a LOT of shows (nearing 300 now) but this was so loud my shirt moved every time he hit the bass drum.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
I saw this show in Chicago last weekend. Loved every second of it. Pantera sounded very good. I want to see their own headline tour so to hear a longer set. Metallica keeps getting better as they age. Not as great of course when they first started, but they are miles better than 15 yrs ago. They put on a show that not many people will ever forget.disarm wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2024 1:09 am First night down...Metallica, Pantera and Mammoth WVH!
All three bands were incredible and my son had an awesome time. He wasn't crazy about Pantera, and I can't say that I've ever been a huge fan either, but Zakk Wylde is a force of nature and it was cool to see Cowboys From Hell performed live.
Mammoth WVH sounded great despite playing to a mostly empty stadium as the first opener and suffering from a lot of echo due to lack of people. Wolfgang van Halen's level of musical talent is off the charts...catchy songwriting, killer guitar riffs/solos, and one hell of a live voice.
And Metallica...what is there to say? They're absolute masters of their craft and put on an amazing show, kicking ass for two almost-nonstop hours.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
They were phenomenal!
Eloise and Lucia danced through the entire opening band's set, then they dragged Mila down and pogoed on her for a while and Bela stood and watched from next to us.
The entire band had so much energy through their own set and, I swear, they didn't even break a sweat. Their young age is not a gimmick, it is a feature!
The opening band was a supergroup made up of Detroit punk-rock legends. Lead singers of Suicide Machines, Gangster Fun and Ko and The Knockouts. Ko was in The Dirtbombs too...
They were pretty great too and it was funny to watch them play sober and try not to curse to much in front of the little kids.

Billy Bragg is playing the Vic here in Chicago. I think I’m going to have to go. I’ve decided I want to start seeing more live shows this year.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
this was a totally acceptable free concert. local bands Muñeca (retro-grunge act made up of a couple young women from Argentina and the lyrics are all en Español. there were a few times i thought they were going to break out into some old Melvins track, but all their stuff was original) and The Black Tones (the singer/guitarist is also a DJ on KEXP). Dinosaur played a 70 minute set with no encore and most of what i wanted to hear (they even closed out with "Just Like Heaven" which they never played at any show i've seen them at before). i guess this is something of a 'warm-up' show for them before they go on tour with The Flaming Lips/Weezer next weekhitbyambulance wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 7:40 pm just found out Dinosaur Jr. is playing a free set in downtown Seattle in a park plaza tomorrow afternoon, so i guess that's my next concert

Just saw Peter Hook & The Light (Riv in Chicago).
Hooky and the band were fucking on.
Especially the JD half of the show. They did NO Substance and JD Substance and a handful of random songs.

I just saw Everclear at a local fair this afternoon. They typically have up-and-coming country performers, but they went for rock bands every day this year. It's a little sad to see a big band from my teenage years playing a town fair, but there was a huge crowd and they still put on an awesome show!

I saw Jack White at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT last night...small club that holds a little under 1,000 people. The small venue for such a dynamic performer made for a really awesome show. Jack White is like a force of nature on stage...amazing guitarist with an energy that blew the roof off of Toad's.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
An article from last week about his behavior in Tampa;
https://www.cltampa.com/tampa/review-in ... w/18509224
https://www.cltampa.com/tampa/review-in ... w/18509224
Which leaves only one other member of the band to focus on: lead singer Perry Farrell. Sporting a vintage denim three-piece suit and a fresh, silvery-blonde pompadour, the normally charismatic frontman looked dapper and stylish. However, his delivery and his unusual demeanor didn’t jive with his slick look.
Fumbling for much of the night with a small vocal modulation contraption that was planted on a stand near his microphone, Farrell seemed off early in the set, and his behavior seemed to spiral more throughout the night.
It’s hard to detract from the sheer, metallic edge of a tune like “Mountain Song.” One thing this band was able to do in its heyday, which made it so unique, was to appeal to a variety of listeners. At their peak, it wasn’t unusual for its audience to consist of heavy metal fans, punks, alt-rockers, and hair metal followers. This song in particular seemed to be what attracted so many from so many different camps at the time. And it still sounded great and packed a mighty wallop. Unfortunately, vocally, it suffered on Thursday night. Farrell’s delivery was either late, or disjointed, and it was hard to pair his lackluster performance with the absolute, defined power the band was churning out behind him.
Things continued to get odd; Farrell launched into many nonsensical rants about cow pastures, mushrooms, surfing, living in Florida, and arguing with his brother about politics, among other undecipherable topics. Chugging from a full bottle of wine throughout the performance, one almost got the feeling that this wasn’t the first bottle he’d uncorked for the night.
At one point, during one of his ramblings, Navarro deliberately cranked out a loud, piercing chord on his guitar, as almost to silence Farrell and get the show back on track.
The band’s 90-minute set ended with two of its most well-known songs: “Stop!” and “Been Caught Stealing.” The crowd went wild and ate up the back-to-back punch of these two alt-rock classics. The band was energized, and the crowd reacted accordingly, but Farrell’s struggles continued, as witnessed by his incoherent speech that occurred simultaneously over the recorded, female spoken word introduction that serves as the lead-in to “Stop!”
During several of the odd, uncomfortable moments of the performance, it felt that it was Farrell and his quizzical state that should have come to a stop, instead of the music.

I've always wondered if Farrell struggles with mental health issues. He does seem oftentimes confused instead of eccentric.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Perry needs to go to rehab.
undoubtedly David, Daniel and Kevin have had enough of that already - i also saw the last Bauhaus reunion before that tour had to be cancelled due to Murph needing to be checked into rehab. they were in great form and clearly wanted to continue playing, thus the Love & Rockets reunion (saw them last year ... or was it the year before)Even more bummed that we won't get to see Love & Rockets either because of Perry being an asshat.

Yup, they pulled the plug on the rest of the tour.
Jane's Addiction's scheduled Toronto show on Wednesday is off, as one of the premier bands of alternative rock's heyday cancelled the remaining dates on their tour after a stunning band punch-up at a Boston concert.
The band first cancelled Sunday night's show in Bridgeport, Conn., apologizing to fans, but as of early Monday morning had not offered a clear statement with respect to the rest of the tour.
But that changed shortly after 11 a.m. ET when a statement went up on the band's social media channels
"The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group," a statement on their Instagram page read. "As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour."

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
I attended two concerts last week. I think it's the first time in my life that I've seen two concerts in one week. I am truly a rock-n-roll rebel.
First, Charly Bliss at a small venue in Brooklyn. They originated in New York, and every time I see them here it feels like a homecoming. At various points during the show, the lead singer said hi to her mom and dad, her best friend, and her fiancé in the audience. Their music is energetic and upbeat, and in a small room packed with fans singing along, the vibe was joyful. Just perfect.
Then Pulp at the Kings Theatre, a gorgeously restored space from the 1920s. Unlike Charly Bliss, I was not among the oldest people in the room at this one. In fact, it was kind of weird seeing 20-somethings at the show. How do they know Pulp? Anyway, it was a great show. I was mildly concerned that we'd see an aging band going through the motions - they are all around 60 years old now - but it was dramatic and theatrical, mostly thanks to singer Jarvis Cocker, who struts and throws shapes like it's still 1989.
Both concerts were a testament to the power of a charismatic frontman. Jarvis Cocker has the audience wrapped around his little finger and he knows it. Eva Hendricks of Charly Bliss bring such unbelievably high energy that the audience feels compelled to match it. I would happily watch either of them do basically anything for hours.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Fun fact: I was in the first dozen or so Houby parades...first from Boy Scouts where one year we got to carry a Macy's floating character (Underdog, IIRC), then leading the parade with the Morton Marching Band. Well, almost leading, there were horses ahead of us, and the freshmen had to march through the horseshit.
Years later, Bush the First was in the parade, pandering to the Eastern Europeans and touting his role in bringing down the Berlin Wall. Sadly, the restaurant he appeared in front of, Klaus, with it's Hanseatic facade, is no longer with us.

This is great to hear! Pulp is one of my favorites, and I last saw them at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in 2012. They were amazing! I’ve been thinking about whether or not to try to see them on this tour. I was worried they may be washed up by now, but this review is getting me excited to see them again.AWS260 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 2:50 pm Then Pulp at the Kings Theatre, a gorgeously restored space from the 1920s. Tuesday night went and saw this 73 year old geezer put on a show that most bands 50 years younger couldnt pull off.
2 plus hours of almost flawless rock and blues.
Voice as good as ever. Band tighter than tight.
Fantastic little venue in the middle of nowhere.
This guy has been putting out some great, great music lately.
Check out Black Country Communion.
Joe Bonamassa. Jason Bonham. Derek Sherinian.
All star band that has put out 5 great albums.
Watch this video and then watch a recent one of his former band, Deep Purple.
Vocally.......absolutely no comparison.
Ian Gillan should be ashamed of himself for continuing to drag his old carcass out on stage.

Although just like in 2012, there is a weird cognitive dissonance in hearing thousands of middle aged, I-can-afford-Pulp-tickets fans singing along to Common People, which is absolutely not about us. I hear the line, "you're laying in bed at night, watching roaches climb the wall, if you called your dad he could stop it all," and realize that in this scenario almost everyone in venue, including me, is "dad."

Weird Al announced a pretty extensive 2025 tour today!
He's playing two shows at Edgefield in Portland. I hate Edgefield. It's a lovely venue but the logistics are terrible - and get worse every year as they find ways to cram in more people (and sell more tickets).
So we're going to see him in Eugene instead.

We're seeing Amorphis/Dark Tranquility tonight. It's a "co-headlining" tour and Amorphis has been posting on their FB page which band will be headlining that night and what time they'll be going on. I appreciated this, since I'm mostly just going to see Amorphis and was really hoping I'd know before the show if they were going on first or last. I've been up since 5am and am not sure if I'll last through a show that goes until 11:30pm.
They've posted this information for every show so far this tour...except for tonight. No details for tonight's show whatsoever.
I'm unreasonably annoyed by this.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Weeknight shows just kinda suck. We ended up bailing 2/3 of the way through Amorphis' set because I simply couldn't stay awake any longer. There was no energy in the crowd, which was really small to begin with. I doubt there were more than 150 people there by the time we left round 10:45. I feel bad for the bands as they all put on good shows, it's just past my bedtime and I gotta get up for meetings in the morning.
We decided last night that unless it's a band we're really dying to see, we're going to avoid any weeknight shows from here on out.
(And they did finally announce the order...about an hour before the show started. )

Getting old medical complaints?
Weeknight shows went away in my 40s, especially if they had no place to sit. By my 50s COVID hit and I haven't seen a show for a very long time. My next show that I was trying to get to was Love and Rockets and Jane's Addiction. The universe conspires to keep my from dipping my lungs back in to the COVID filled air, I guess. That's four of five shows I was finally going to get out for and then 'nope' for one reason or another.

Heh.
Not just me though. The vibe on weekday shows is almost always just…weird. Everyone knows they have to get up for work in the morning, so pretty much everyone’s just kinda blah. Probably not as noticeable with big venue shows, but definitely a challenge for smaller clubs.

My last concert was Jack White in a small venue on a Tuesday and it was incredible...packed house until the end and energy was through the roof the whole time. I think that has a lot to do with him having a very enthusiastic fan base, high energy show, and no downtime for the two hours he was on stage.
That said, weeknights are definitely a challenge. I left that show around 10:45pm, had to drive an hour home, then up at 5:30am to be ready for work at 7:00. I was definitely dragging through the day and exhausted by evening, but the show was totally worth it!
I have another late concert coming up this weekend...Foo Fighters closing out a music festival on Sunday night. They'll probably wrap up around 10:30, then 90-minute drive home and straight to bed to squeeze some sleep in before Monday morning. Going to be a lot of fun, but will be a rough start to the work week.
