I'm going to assume this doesn't affect grocery stores and maybe Walmarts and stuff. But maybe include restaurants, which will be a bummer.

I don't know your wife, so this might not work with her. I have dealt with people who are not getting with the program in other situations and have found that:
A) it's best if I don't try to convince them of anything, they have their position and I'm not going to shake them out of it
B) don't disagree with things they say that are a matter of opinion, are you being paranoid, well that's a matter of opinion so I would let that slide
C) continue to do what needs to be done, allow them to vent about it but not physically interfere with what you're doing
D) don't assume your concerns are their concerns, some people won't feel the 'weight of it' the way you do because they feel no weight at all
E) remember that people have different ways of coping, sometimes they take opposing stands because it makes them feel better

I feel your pain. My wife is very strong willed and while she would be careful about exposing others, she isn't too concerned about herself. So I just surreptitiously keep things clean and limit exposure. Thankfully she is a homebody and we never get visitors so if we do get a two week self-quarantine she would probably be happy with just a couple of runs to the grocery to get stuff and maybe a few trips to the beach.

The bad news is that the dinner-theater we were going to visit in 2.5 weeks has gone from being careful to just closing down. And they won't be issuing refunds, instead they will give you a credit, which is reasonable I guess since before they had a no refund policy.

Federal order is above my pay grade, but if your state isn't communicating that closures are coming, they're either being foolish or waiting for feds to mandate it. Either way, prepare. Get what you can locally, make arrangements online for whatever else you can. We're about to collectively live through something that most thought unthinkable. Prepare.

My wife just got a call from our dentist. The kids had an appointment on the 18th. They said the CDC just called them and shut them down. I work in eye care. I expect we're next.

When I told my boss about the dentist, he walked out to his department, got their attention, and announced to everyone that him and the other owners intend to keep us open to the bitter end; either the patients stop coming in or the government shuts us down. Not before.

OK, assume I'm an idiot ("hey, you're an idiot!"). Will an only 2 week mandatory Nation wide self Quarantine really make a big difference? Or are we looking at 2 weeks now, then another 2 weeks, then another 2 weeks... you see my drift.

My bet is 2 weeks is the opening salvo because it allows for evaluation but another 2 weeks is almost assured. China started coming back online in bits and pieces after 4 weeks.

My bid this morning while discussing amongst people at work was the order would come down next Monday or possibly Friday is the right people got in Trump's ear. Not off by too much.

Protocol is to announce short term closures/disruptions initially. Announcing 7 or 14 day is better than saying 30 day. The idea is to limit panic. It's easier to accept additional closures after initial closures/restrictions have started. Prepare.

I have a 6 month supply of daily wear contacts that are supposed to be delivered to my eye doctor on Wednesday. I'm really hoping they can stay open until then, as I'm legally blind without them. I can wear glasses, but the coke bottle lenses give me a massive headache after a couple hours. Trying to do that for a few weeks (or months) is not going to be fun.

Good luck with your contacts.

It kind of chaps my ass that Idris was able to get tested despite having no symptoms and yet in the "real non-celebrity" world, people with symptoms aren't able to get tested because of the lack of tests. Pretty frustrating.

A Google search yielded no info, but I doubt they want to broadcast that there are assistance programs open to those who find themselves unprepared; I expect it would encourage unpreparedness. If I had a problem like that, I'd start with the state's 211 call line and spiral out from there to fire departments, city clerks, government offices, state capitals, etc.

He mentions being in proximity to others who were diagnosed. Money always lubricates the fastest way to many points in life. I'm not specifically chapped. He's one less person that's an unknown and being tested gives him the info he needs to do the right thing. I'm not even sure which country he's in right now. He's native to England.

No. Essential services will be open (pharmacy, grocery, gas) but they might be on modified schedule. Start setting up food delivery options now. Do not rely on one source for everything. If your local supermarket has shopping online and can delivery or you can meet them in the lot at a designed time for pickup, consider that.

Local restaurants will likely be able to offer pickup/takeout, but so much will depend on their ability to stay open as well. I would use them to supplement your food plan ("I'm going to get a takeout meal 2x a week"); I would not rely on them for 7x a week service.

Remember, this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint.

Tell me, how does, for example a commercial printing business work from home? IT companies like AT&T, IBM and Verizon could probably achieve high WFH rates (although how does a line technician repair a fiber cut from their bedroom?) What about food processors? At any given moment, you have product in all stages of the supply chain, from the fields to distributors, to stores, packaging plants, canneries, or other processing. Attempting such a thing on a national basis wouldn't just send us into a recession, but quite likely another dark age and we'll be unable to feed the masses and the masses are not going to go quietly once that becomes apparent.

I suspect a great many businesses may well follow suit. Realistically, an awful lot of (especially smaller) businesses operate on mighty thin margins. So closing down for a month or two = closing down permanently.

Pronouncements made from the relative safety of governmental or academic positions in which the chances of losing one's paycheck are slim to none are one thing. But there's a world of difference for the business-owners responsible for balancing the books and trying to remain afloat and viable (e.g. see msteelers earlier post).

You don't. You hope the gvt or if you have one with a heart and means your owner will pay you stay home. We supply techs nationwide to ATT/etc., I am well aware of what is about to happen to field techs across the country. Not sure what the point is on the rest of your comments. None of that will mater much on a short 2 week shutdown, plus critical industries will be exempt. PS we are already heading for a recession, too late to stop that.
