Has anyone else seen any good scientific reporting on herd immunity? It seems like that is a very big answer we need to know before testing even matters. If your immunity is good for a month or two, that doesn't really help us get to "back to work" status.

I turned off the press conference like usual and apparently I missed Fauci dragged out to give an apology to Dear Leader. A reporter straight up asked Fauci if this was a forced apology. He got mad and sad it was voluntary. It is insane that someone had to ask that question.
Here is the exchange - this is *insane*.

I'm refusing to watch tv while they air these things but I'm monitoring the feed. Apparently he is now playing campaign ads at the briefing. The networks need to either *stop airing these live* or given Biden equal time. This is absurdity and the networks are literally making the same mistakes that might have killed our nation. This is beyond frustrating to hear is happening again.
Edit: Wow! Good for the networks. Everyone but Fox cut away. Apparently the press might have finally figured out they need to treat Trump differently than other Presidents. Lol.

CBS's Paula Reid presses Trump on his propaganda video: "Your video has a complete gap. What did your administration do in February with the time that your travel ban bought you?" Trump only responds: "A lot. A lot."
Reid: "The video has a gap."
Trump: "You know you're a fake."

The whole thing is beyond absurd. Trump is airing grievances, playing propaganda, and muddying the water. And it is *what he wants*. He wants to have fights with reporters. It is red meat for his base. These briefings are not informative. He lies, he attacks the media, he won't answer questions. They need to stop covering them live entirely.

“The president of the United States calls the shots,” Mr. Trump said in a briefing at the White House. He added that he would work with the states, adding that he believed they were anxious to reopen when they can. “When someone is president of the United States, the authority is total.”

Nope she is one of the worst of them. Anyone raised by this monster is beyond tainted goods. I'd have to reluctantly go with Mnuchin but this is just shades of evil at this point. Not a normal functioning non-sociopath amongst them.
You know, for some reason, the "shades of evil" comment made me immediately think:

The whole thing with the Governors of the North East and West Coast banding together is a fine showing of regional cooperation but it would be totally unnecessary if we had a functional Federal government. It is crazy that the President yells he is in control and a bunch of Governors the same day held a well-organized press conference. Now here is my inevitable gripe. Guess what didn't get covered live? That press conference. Portions of it did but they only stayed on for the immediate beginning. I had to flip around to watch it ... online ... and I got more information there than I have in weeks. The cable news networks? They stayed there while Cuomo was speaking. They have their star and when the star isn't speaking they cut away. They aren't here to provide us information and they suck. And this only highlights it.

There's a western states group, a NE states group...if only there was some pre-existing organization that was meant to represent all the states. Some sort of, I don't know, a Federation of states, or something like that. I know emotions are running high, but I almost feel like, "you know what, F it if Texas and the Southern Confederated States of Jesus want to secede. let em. I want to live somewhere where facts and science rule the decision-making process"

Time will tell if the red states also decide to band together or if each will go it alone. My money is on "going it alone" because "Fuck you, I got mine" seems to be the GOP mantra.

Probably going to be more of a East Coast / West Coast organizations working together and Red states screaming "I HATE YOU, HELP ME!" while stabbing themselves in the arm with fake promises and swallowing snake oil.
Heck, they may even achieve herd immunity faster than other states because of their actions. Maybe that's the goal. I mean, it worked for the 1918 Spanish Flu, right?

Ed Yong, continuing to
deliver over at the Atlantic:
Absent any certainty, one group of health experts, led by Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist and former adviser to the Obama administration, argues that stay-at-home orders must continue until at least May 20. Another team, led by Scott Gottlieb, a former FDA commissioner, suggests that states should relax their restrictions only after new case counts have fallen for 14 consecutive days. Currently, the U.S. is still averaging about 30,000 new confirmed cases every day. “My sense is that we haven’t turned the corner,” said Rivers, who is a co-author on Gottlieb’s road map.
And:
Stay-at-home orders might lift first, allowing friends and family to reunite. Small businesses could reopen with limitations: Offices might run on shifts and still rely heavily on teleworking, while restaurants and bars could create more space between tables. Schools could restart once researchers determine if children actually spread the virus.
This process might take several weeks to unfold, and even at the end of it, none of the experts I spoke with was comfortable with the return of crowded public spaces. Gottlieb’s road map, for example, recommends that until a vaccine or an effective treatment is produced, social gatherings should be limited to 50 people or fewer. That will be especially challenging in large cities: An average Manhattan street or subway car is the equivalent of a mass gathering. Elsewhere, concerts, conferences, summer camps, political rallies, large weddings, and major sporting events may all have to be suspended for at least this year. “It’s hard for me to imagine anyone going to Fenway Park and sitting with 30,000 fans—that will almost surely be a bad idea,” said Ashish Jha, an internist and public-health expert at Harvard. “This isn’t going to look like a normal summer in America.”
It's a lengthy but well-researched and realistic article. Would recommend.

Loving watching the California checklist of events and measures they need to assess and hit before they can ease up on restrictions - which flies in direct contradiction to Trump's "I CONTROL THE STATES" tantrum earlier. Like a beautiful slap in the face. A great big middle finger to him. I love it.
This sort of actual rational, reasonable, adult briefing is what Americans need. Not hissy fits and finger-pointing. Not suggesting "Some of you may have to die for our economy" ...

The frustrating part (one of the many frustrating parts?) is that this got comparatively minor coverage vs Trump's campaign rally, yet this and the similar east-coast pact are by far more impactful.

A bit of a sad anecdote but I live off a major state highway in Central Jersey and all I've been hearing the last 2-3 days is sirens every 10 minutes or so. Essentially what they were reporting in NYC. Reporting today indicates another surge in cases/deaths here in NJ. We've had several land close to us and I just found out the entire family of friend of mine just got it. His wife is a ER nurse in Jersey City. Despite all their precautions (she has been essentially living separately from the family) it looks like it jumped their "firewall" and got them all. Ugly stuff.

Sorry to hear that, RM9. Nobody I know has been afflicted yet, mostly because I don't know many bodies. However, the death toll in my small town (~32,000) went from 4 to 14 last week. They haven't been publicly identified; I'm guessing it's because we have several long-term care facilities in town.

Sorry to heard that as well. I had a lot of near misses, the worst probably was an early 30s husband of a friend who was on a vent for over a week. He had several cardiac arrests related to extubation. They got him past that but I can't imagine he'll be in great shape any time soon. Then finally had some land close over the weekend. A former co-worker of my wife.

Nah
The former head of the small business administration, Linda stepped down in 2019 in order to join President Donald Trump's re-election campaign. The former wrestling executive that helped build WWE into a massive company had been a member of Trump's cabinet since 2017 but was going to help raise funds for campaign ads. However, there were several users on social media that felt there was a connection. They believed that McMahon's Super PAC's $18.5 million donation to the State of Florida played a role in wrestling becoming an "essential service."

I know the WHO is this weeks whipping boy of choice, but I’m a little fuzzy as to why, exactly. I assume it’s because they didn’t sufficiently kiss the ring, but maybe there’s more to it.
Also, is there not a single adult in the room with the balls to say “hey, maybe withdrawing from a health organization mid-pandemic might not be the best idea.”

That's kind of unorthodox and my data peeps don't like when you do that. Instead, when this is all over we list known deaths and presumptive deaths. Some might even detail it out more by listing COVID-19 as a contributing factor. But to just lump people in without confirmatory testing is a no-no.

I agree. The story even says it is higher level of death compared to baseline. So it is deaths from all causes being lumped in potentially. It is messy at best but I think its a fair indicator if you are communicating the toll on the city overall. They should be clearer about that.

Another card-carrying member of the GOP Death Cult offers his
observation:
An Indiana congressman said Tuesday that letting more Americans die from the novel coronavirus is the "lesser of two evils" compared with the economy cratering due to social distancing measures.
Speaking with radio station WIBC in Indiana, Republican Rep. Trey Hollingsworth asserted that, while he appreciated the science behind the virus' spread, "it is always the American government's position to say, in the choice between the loss of our way of life as Americans and the loss of life, of American lives, we have to always choose the latter."
As always, you first Representative Hollingsworth. You first. I'm still trying to get my mind around the pivot to this, but then I remember the President is on TV every night showing zero remorse or empathy for those that have already died.
