Slowing down in the rain or with poor visibility is smart, but

Those are some pretty significant qualifiers. The lights on his car are not fine. There is something wrong with his night vision. His defrosters don't work.

Slowing down in poor visibility is rule #1, and following it is smart, but if you got rid of those qualifiers and were genuinely unsafe to drive, would you go out on public roads?

Next time don't drive. Call an ambulance. That's what they're for.
Amen. Don't make me take another call of your wife or you desperately trying to figure out if the other is breathing and having a stranger give one of you CPR or come on the phone and tell me that there's no point. I'd like that a lot.

Holman wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 11:37 am NYT: This Mutant Crayfish Clones Itself, and It’s Taking Over Europe
Before about 25 years ago, the species simply did not exist. A single drastic mutation in a single crayfish produced the marbled crayfish in an instant.

The mutation made it possible for the creature to clone itself, and now it has spread across much of Europe and gained a toehold on other continents. In Madagascar, where it arrived about 2007, it now numbers in the millions and threatens native crayfish.

“We may never have caught the genome of a species so soon after it became a species,” said Zen Faulkes, a biologist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, who was not involved in the new study.
As marmorkrebs became more popular, owners grew increasingly puzzled. The crayfish seemed to be laying eggs without mating. The progeny were all female, and each one grew up ready to reproduce.
The scientists concluded that the new species got its start when two slough crayfish mated. One of them had a mutation in a sex cell — whether it was an egg or sperm, the scientists can’t tell.

Normal sex cells contain a single copy of each chromosome. But the mutant crayfish sex cell had two.

Somehow the two sex cells fused and produced a female crayfish embryo with three copies of each chromosome instead of the normal two. Somehow, too, the new crayfish didn’t suffer any deformities as a result of all that extra DNA.

It grew and thrived. But instead of reproducing sexually, the first marbled crayfish was able to induce her own eggs to start dividing into embryos. The offspring, all females, inherited identical copies of her three sets of chromosomes. They were clones.

Ok, but how do they taste?

I guess I don't assume that everything that Daehawk says is completely without exaggeration in this case. I know I've come home before and griped that I couldn't see the sides of the road when, in reality, it was just the normal bad weather effects and no worse for me then everyone else on the road.

My default assumption is that everyone on the internet is slightly exaggerating all the time to make a better story.

Lemme update both my wife and the car.

Wife : Tests for flu and strep were negative. Chest xray shows no pneumonia. The NA said that they don't test for other flu types but its probably some type of upper respiratory virus. They gave her a prescription for a codeine cough medicine. At home 2 hours later I had to rush her to our own local ER. The one no one trusts. They gave her a breathing treatment and some steroids. Then sent her home with the same. She is better today and can breath but is coughing a lot. Gotta remember my wife is 62 with health problems.

Car : Has headlights. Looking at them they look normal and bright. But on a jet black road in jet black night in a downpour with the road wet I cant tell they are on. I can see them on signs and on reflectors and reflective paint. Not all roads are painted well because they are ALWAYS working on them around here. Low or bright seem the same. The housing is dirty INSIDE not out so cant buff them. I think I need to adjust their up and down too. I have planned to get new bulbs and housings for 2 years. Thats nearly $200 that I never have at once. So I drove about 25 mph and thats why it took so long. I have no choice when something needs done. And if I cant afford $200 lights I cannot pay the 20% medicare doesn't pay for an ambulance. Its either sit and watch my wife suffocate or drive her as safe as I can. I know a lot of you come from a place where you cant comprehend our lives. Its not your fault. Its like Trump or ZhaZha trying to understand why a minimum wage worker doesn't get a limo. :) We do what we can or what we have to the way we can do them. I buy parts for stuff a little per month. As for the lights we go nowhere after dark.....unless its an emergency that comes up like this. trying to find a video card and pay $50 for a used one that I use every hour of every day is not in the same ball field as $200 for something Id usually never use. Some of you guys are judging by the cover you think you see out of the corner of your eye. Stay calm :)

Defroster..almost forgot. The AC has a slow leak and over the winter it all leaked out so no cold air for defrosting a damp windshield. Also my window doesn't work and she was deathly sick so I could only crack her window a little and having defrost on warm bout did us in itself. Theres a LOT more that goes on other than the quick stuff I post and I do exagerate a little. Its writing exciting. I could write "Went to the ice cream shop and a deer ran across the road near me" or I could write "Was headed to get some arctic snowballs and a wild rabid moose like thing nearly killed me when it attacked my car as I was driving by!" :)

Im not going to hurt anyone in anything and the worst that could happen is I ditch my wheel.

That description - that they look fine normally and illuminate things like signs and so forth but not on wet roads - sounds normal to me. I wouldn't worry too much about the headlights. The buffing kits and new bulbs might be beneficial but it sounds like you just hit the combination of dark wet night that makes all driving horrible except on the best roads with raised reflective paint for all of the lines.

I think you'd find that our situations are pretty similar. I'm in a tiny midwestern town. Hell, while I'm not sure exactly which city you're in, I would be willing to bet that I could have lunch at my house and dinner at yours. I'm on disability and perpetually broke. I am responsible for the wellbeing of others despite my low income. I also don't get out of the house much, and don't have much real-world support. I also find my peace of mind through a hobby (PC gaming) that I shouldn't have anything to do with due to the cost. And I'd also go stir crazy if I didn't have it. I know I have in the past. And I worry constantly about what will happen if some component or other dies, as it will likely limit or remove that one source of peace for a period of months. And yes, an unexpected hundreds expense like an ambulance would cripple financially me for months.

I also have a car that hovers on the edge of death. Every time I get in it, I wonder if it will start. The only interior lights that work are the warning lights, which don't turn off regardless of whether there is an issue, so if I drive at night I have to mount my phone on the dash with the flashlight on to see the dials. The rearview mirror is gone. The power locks don't work, and the windows can't be rolled down. There is no power steering. And this car took every resource I had, including all of my savings, all I could save, gift money, and a GoFundMe. With all of that, it was literally only one of three cars in the eight or nine lots I visited that was within my budget.

So if I tend to jump on you about this stuff more than some others, it isn't because I don't understand. It's actually the opposite.

I'm a bit torn by that. On the one hand, food allergies are serious business and should not be taken lightly. On the other hand, it's a movie.

Yeah, it's a tough call. I mean, I'm not going to announce to the world I'm boycotting, I would just decide and then do whatever I decided.

We humourize other, more serious crimes in animated movies all the time, but this one feels off because most kids have access to a kid with allergies and the thing to which the kid is allergic.

Shrug.

Call me a cynic, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's mostly just a PR stunt from Sony to gin up publicity for an otherwise ho-hum movie.

Oh, and I probably should have stated that I intend to "boycott" the movie.... because it looks incredibly stupid. Or, you know, I'm just not gonna go see it.

Also, seems like the parents could have a 2 min conversation with their kids to explain the dangers of food allergies.

As someone with moderate food allergies who has been hospitalized more than once, I don't get the outrage. Admittedly peanut dust won't send me into anaphylactic shock and I am sure a lot of people are a lot more sensitive about their allergies than I am but I'm having a hard time empathizing with the cause of rabble rousing against a cartoon of violence showing the weaponization of allergies.

I think recently in real life some kids were arrested because they knew a kid had something like a pineapple allergy or something and rubbed their hands in it then shook the allergic kids hand. That should be attempted murder.

I usually try to err on the sensitive side, but yeah, this is an overreaction. I haven't seen the scene, but it sounds exactly like the kind of thing you'd expect in this sort of movie. I've forgotten most of my Beatrix Potter, but doesn't Mr. McGregor want to kill the rabbits half the time? The film might or might not pull it off comedically, but it sounds close enough to self defense. And if he has to use an epipen, doesn't that actually raise awareness?

A family cartoon/CGI movie has jokes potentially in bad taste, demonstrating bad behaviour? Imagine that. Maybe investigate what you're going to show your kids beforehand, and/or discuss it with them afterward.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Got a shot in my shoulder once. Didn't feel a thing. By the time I left about 10 min later my arm didn't feel numb but it was swinging and awkward to use as if it was half asleep. By the next day it was normal again and the shoulder pain was gone. That was a year ago. Its still pretty much ok though ive had a twinge from it once or twice.
