Im not sure about those loans even if they are interest free. The government tells people to stay away from your business or openly tells you to not open then wants to make you take a loan to survive. They should simply provide you with enough to stay afloat if its them that are causing you to lose your livelyhood.
Now if they weren't saying either of those and people stayed away on their own then an interest free loan would be fine.

Oh I figure it is going to get worse before it gets better. But the longer the delay before it gets hairy the more time we get more infrastructure ready to deal with it. Thankfully we are familiar with being isolated and having to get along with fewer amenities due to the yearly prepping for hurricanes.gameoverman wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 11:59 pmNot to jinx you but here in LA county we were cruising along hardly even touched by any of this, then one day things just changed. Suddenly schools are closed and it's on. You're not going to get much of a warning or see a slow deterioration of the situation, it's just going to happen.jztemple2 wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 11:37 pmIt's almost weird how lightly Florida has been hit so far. The op 'n' hop chain (some letters in their sign are burned out) is running senior citizen hours from 6-7:30 a.m. for those over 60. I'd be all over that if it were possible to be awake and functional in the middle of the night like that.

Dollar General has announced that their first hour open will be for senior citizens. That's fine because, as my wife says, seniors are all up early anyway. I tell her that I must not be a senior because if she didn't wake me up at nine each morning I'd sleep in a lot moreKraken wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 12:16 am The op 'n' hop chain (some letters in their sign are burned out) is running senior citizen hours from 6-7:30 a.m. for those over 60. Some enterprising senior is going to go in there and clean house and make scratch
Out of the dozen and half emails saying what they are doing during all this from companies I got a strange one from Bath & Body. They are completely closing all of their stores. Its strange because one of their big business items is hand sanitizer. Me and my wife always got the pocket ones there. In fact Im carrying some from there now.

Wife is still awaiting definitive action from the company leadership -- she is already complaining because they have no masks and she works in a nursing home where an outbreak could be devastating. I'm waiting for some assurance because if the virus is successfully passing along this chain, that would make me exposed now as well. Currently, my wife's job issued the ever-so-helpful instruction "if you have a fever, stay home." If you have a fever and it's from this virus, then it is already too late to put that genie back in the bottle.
Not sure yet if I should notify my employer of this possible 4-degrees separation exposure.
I would say no. Not unless you are exposed to someone who tests positive. Being exposed to someone who knows someone who knows someone who tested positive isn't enough in my opinion.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
I'm posting now from my hospital call room in Hartford, CT, where I'm covering the night for the anesthesia department. Earlier tonight, I had to intubate (place a breathing tube) in a 20yo kid who was suspected to have COVID when he arrived to the hospital 11 days ago. He tested negative on 3/7 and shouldn't be infected now because he hasn't gone outside the ICU since then...but he has a fever of 102 now and is in a room not more than 75 feet from our hospital's one test-positive COVID patient, and several others in isolation awaiting test results. I sure hope someone working in that ICU didn't carry it to his room because he's not deemed high-risk enough to warrant letting us use some of the very limited supply of N95 masks...the ones that are locked away because hospital employees keep stealing them.
My department is the first to be called when these patients need to be intubated, and they barely have enough equipment to protect us already. The anesthesiologist who intubated the first patient to test positive here is now quarantined at home because he's not feeling well, and more of our staff are calling out every day either because of illness or lack of childcare during our school closures. My wife is a physician assistant, but she may have to stop working soon to care for our kids. Why? Because noone feels comfortable coming into our home to help when I'm going in and out of the hospital every day...they think it's too risky, and I can't blame them.
And this is only the beginning...

I salute you and your dedication. It makes me feel lame for being worried about coming to my desk at work, where I'm isolated from everyone by default. I honestly can't imagine the problems healthcare workers are going to be facing. It sounds horrific, and I'm hoping that the "flatten the curve" movement makes your jobs sustainable without becoming crisis-mode every day, all day.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
My mom has a contract gig as a teacher evaluator and coach for brand new special ed teachers. The job typically had her going into schools 3-4 times a week to observe teachers. Since all the schools are closed, the district made the brilliant decision to require all the people in her position (most of whom are retired teachers) to come into the district office to do individual FaceTime coaching with the teachers. Mom said there were 20-30 of them there for 6 hours yesterday, doing something she could have easily done from her couch at home.YellowKing wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 10:38 pm I'm work from home indefinitely now. My wife still has to report as normal, which is odd since she works for a school which is now closed to teachers and students. I haven't quite figured out their rationale yet, and hoping it's just a temporary measure.
Mom is 72. She's in good health, but I told her to politely tell the district to fuck off if they ask her to do that again today.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
We got an email from the owners of our clinics (eye care) and they basically said "We're staying open. If you feel unsafe with that, feel free to eat your PTO. If you get sick, stay home and eat your PTO. If you get sick at work and we have to close an office, you're eating your PTO. If the CDC closes us, guess what, eat your PTO."
I'm not sure how they'll tell if someone got sick from one of the clinics or from one of their associates outside the office. Their plan is the very definition of why many Americans are going to continue working anywhere they can during this. Most of the employees are hourly, and most likely have less than 2 weeks of accrued time off. No one can afford to not go to work with no other alternative.
I still think what they're doing is irresponsible since the majority of our patients are 65+

Hit another supermarket early this morning after voting. Typically they have one guy working checkout that early. Today there were 3 and all had lines. Still no toilet paper though, but I did snag another 12 of Celebration Ale (and could have had at least one more if i had taken a cart and not just a basket).

Genuinely concerning numbers from a a new study/model that was published yesterday out of the UK and the impact of NPIs (non-pharmaceutical interventions, i.e. shutting down everything, social distancing, etc...).

READ this "punch-in-the-gut" paper from @imperialcollege. Different terms (serious mitigation, suppression), same idea (flattening curve, containment).

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
Joking aside, they've set aside the first hour for senior and disabled shoppers. This is great. (Albeit annoying, as someone who gets off night shift around when they open, and needs to go to bed... but it's for an important cause.) I wasn't sure if this had taken effect yet, so I asked if I could come in and shop and was told yes. They seemed to be bringing out packs of toilet paper one-by-one for people who asked at the register (who all happened to be seniors). The merchandiser looked like he was finally starting to put some out, so I asked if I was allowed to buy a pack. He seemed unsure but said it "should" be OK and gave me one. I've never felt so guilty buying something I needed all my life. I was convinced someone would stop me all the way to the door... that or I'd get mugged on the way home.
I would have obviously been happy to give it up to a senior in need. We're starting to run low though, so I was beginning to get worried. I don't drive so it's not easy to roam all over town hunting. Yes, I realize showers exist... but it shouldn't have to come to that if everyone starts behaving rationally. Though I guess I could try to re-enact ancient Rome and craft a sponge stick.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
Apparently the Imperial College study did convince the UK to shift from their mitigation strategy to a suppression strategy.
UK changes course amid death toll fears
UK changes course amid death toll fears
Change course or a quarter of a million people will die in a "catastrophic epidemic" of coronavirus - warnings do not come much starker than that.
The message came from researchers modelling how the disease will spread, how the NHS would be overwhelmed and how many would die.
The situation has shifted dramatically and as a result we are now facing the most profound changes to our daily lives in peacetime.
This realisation has happened only in the past few days.
However, it is long after other scientists and the World Health Organization had warned of the risks of not going all-out to stop the virus.
The crucial piece of evidence came from the scientists at Imperial College London who first realised the scale of the problem in China and whose advice is heavily influential in government.

It's been interesting to see the reaction to people working from home. Seeing all the posts about "this gives us a chance to step back, bond with our kids, do family activities, read books, connect with nature, etc., etc." makes me want to throw something at the posters.
I have found it to be the exact opposite. I find myself working a lot harder and ignoring my kids even more right now. They got waaaaaay too much TV yesterday while I was on conference call after conference call.

School closures for parents who have also been fully ejected from work can lead to a great bonding experience. For those parents, like my wife and I, it leads to intense frustration as our expected work output doesn't go down and our responsibilities triple.Skinypupy wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:12 amI have found it to be the exact opposite. If it makes you feel better, pretty much every resource I've come across is saying that relaxing "screen time" right now is perfectly appropriate and parents/guardians shouldn't feel guilty about it. We are in extraordinary times and the mental stress of being effectively home bound for 6+ weeks means people need to keep all options on the table.Skinypupy wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:12 amI have found it to be the exact opposite. Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
Here in NJ things are changing...slightly. I've heard more than a few are saying that for patients over 50, if it's a routine/annual visit, they're recommending rescheduling. But if you're under 50, not sick, no one in your house is sick, etc... then come on in. Not sure about PT appointments. I haven't seen official guidance but it's possible the offices connected to hospital systems are pushing protocol out into the PCP offices.
Our veterinarian said their new protocol is to come out to your car and get your pet. They will bring the pet inside, give the examination/shots/whatever and then bring your pet back to you outside. Really, really smart.
I've been telling everyone that asks to call your doctor/dentist/eye doctor first, especially if it's a routine visit. Not only to verify they still want you to come in, but so you can understand any new protocols they might have in place (like calling the morning of to verify you and your household don't have symptoms). So much of this is going to depend on your location and what's happening in your community.

Re: [Health] The Infectious Diseases Thread
We've been in quasi-self quarantine since Friday at about 5:00. That's when we all rolled into the house together - oldest son was released from the hospital and we picked up the twins from school on the way home. Chicago Public Schools were open on Monday, but we kept the twins home after seeing all the morons trying to increase the spread of disease during Saturday's St. Patrick's Day "celebration". Oldest son's school was already canceled for Monday (not that he was going to go anyway, given his health). I'm under work from home orders, and my wife is a student at the moment.
I say quasi-self quarantine because I've gone grocery shopping and last night I hit the Walgreens. (I bought a reusable enema kit, suppositories, toothpaste, and beer - looked like I was having a weird party, but my oldest son has interesting GI requirements.) We've also been going out for walks once or twice a day to get some air and try to stave off the stir crazy. We have been vigilant about hand washing, and I've tried to be careful when out about not touching things.
Fortunately my work is a bit slow right now as I'm transitioning roles within my department and the new stuff hasn't fully kicked in yet. Unfortunately, that means I can't just hole myself up in our bedroom and leave the squabbling 5 year olds to my wife.
I'm curious about people who are excited to binge watch and catch up on TV. Even with my work going slow, my day is still as packed as it is during non-pandemic times.
My biggest fear remains for my oldest son. He's been put on a ventilator just from having a cold (that advanced to pneumonia that advanced to respiratory failure) three times. I know that it's likely to hit the family at some point, and I'm just hoping that medical staff aren't trying to make a decision on the last ventilator between the kid who doesn't walk or talk and a typically developing kid.

Bay Area orders ‘shelter in place,’ only essential businesses open in 6 counties
SFchronicle.com wrote:Six Bay Area counties announced “shelter in place” orders for all residents on Monday — the strictest measure of its kind yet in the continental United States — directing everyone to stay inside their homes and away from others as much as possible for the next three weeks in a desperate move to curb the rapid spread of coronavirus across the region.
The directive was set to begin at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and involves San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties — a combined population of more than 6.7 million. It is to stay in place until at least April 7. The three other Bay Area counties — Sonoma, Solano and Napa — did not issue similar mandates.
Just outside the Bay Area, Santa Cruz County late Monday also announced a “shelter in place” order for its 275,000 residents.
The orders — which are all similarly worded — fall just short of a full lockdown, which would forbid people from leaving their homes without explicit permission. The orders (read San Francisco’s here in its entirety at tinyurl.com/waddyqv) call for county and city sheriffs and police chiefs to “ensure compliance,” and local authorities said they would not “rush to enforce” the directives as residents adjusted to understand what activities are no longer allowed. Violation of the orders is considered a misdemeanor punishable by a fine or jail time.

Geez everyone take care of yourself and each other!!!! Tell the kids that the additional screen time is temporary and once mom/dad go back to work it'll be business as usual. We've had two cases in Santa Clarita. My roomate went to the urgent care yesterday for a stomach issue and there were no patients waiting.

If/when I find myself at home and we're both ordered not to work, my wife has a half dozen very involved home renovation projects we've been stalling on that she's itching to get to. Me, personally, I'd love a break. I'm not going to get one.ImLawBoy wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:46 amI'm curious about people who are excited to binge watch and catch up on TV. Totally location dependent. My Dentist just cancelled my appt to fix an old filling for tomorrow. My MRI on my knee was also cancelled for next week.pr0ner wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:29 amBoth physical therapy clinics I've been to in the past couple of years have sent me emails saying they're staying open.Paingod wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:30 am We got an email from the owners of our clinics (eye care) and they basically said "We're staying open.
I still think what they're doing is irresponsible since the majority of our patients are 65+
My 76 year old mother is going to a hand doctor appointment today.
Health care isn't closing down anywhere.

I'm in manufacturing. WFH options are available, but really kind of limited given the nature of the work. Looks like we are going to ride this until someone shuts us down.

Amazon suspends all warehouse shipments except medical supplies and ‘high-demand’ products
Amazon has temporarily suspended the shipment of all items from independent merchants to its warehouses that are not medical supplies or "high-demand" products.
This temporary suspension will go through 5 April as the e-commerce giant prioritizes products relating to combating the growing coronavirus pandemic.
"We are temporarily prioritizing household staples, medical supplies and other high-demand products coming into our fulfillment centers so we can more quickly receive, restock, and ship these products to customers," an Amazon spokesperson told the Independent.
"We understand this is a change for our selling partners and appreciate their understanding as we temporarily prioritize these products for customers," the spokesperson added.
This decision from Amazon comes after the online site saw an increase in shopping from people around the world. Items prioritized by shoppers and subsequently going out of stock related to cleaning supplies and other necessary items for Covid-19.

BTW, I suspect similar "shelter in place" orders are likely coming to NYC and other major cities. It's somewhat surprising that such an order for the better part of 7 million hasn't received more coverage. But most media companies tend to be more focused upon the East coast, so there will likely be plenty of coverage if and when orders go into effect there.Anonymous Bosch wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:47 am Bay Area orders ‘shelter in place,’ only essential businesses open in 6 counties

I guess the answer was 5 days. I'm glad they're communicating logistics issues and figuring out how to address them.Skinypupy wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:43 am Amazon suspends all warehouse shipments except medical supplies and ‘high-demand’ products

I saw it last night and I'm guessing it's not getting more coverage because it's potentially terrifying. You're absolutely right - more restrictions and orders are absolutely coming.Anonymous Bosch wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:53 amBTW, I suspect similar "shelter in place" orders are likely coming to NYC and other major cities. A great chart to see exactly how the virus is behaving across the world. Substitute China for Italy and you see that they've finally reached (for the most part) their flat curve.

Co-worker's GF actually had a guy try to steal TP from her cart this morning as she walked out to her car. She kicked him in the jewels and booked it. LA county released a map showing where the county's cases are, and Glendora has one! It's not me since I haven't been tested but who knows how long it's been spread around Glendora, I could have it. I'm not sick though, no cough/fever/runny nose. I'd like to say I'm worried or shocked but I had thought for awhile now that this thing had been spreading in the wild for weeks so it's no surprise.
