Blackhawk wrote: Fri May 25, 2018 11:16 am More and more often I see companies (including Amazon) using the USPS intermediary services. I despise them. The usual timeline is:

Day 1: Package is marked as shipped. Tracking number is given. USPS says, "Waiting for package."
Day 2: USPS still waiting for package. I dig deeper and find they used an intermediary.
Day 7 through Day 11 - somewhere in there, a week or more after it was shipped, the intermediary hands the package to the USPS.
Two days later the package is delivered.

These services turn two day shipping into two week shipping with no tracking. Every time.
Really depends on when Amazon drops them off at the station. If they get them there early enough for the clerks to sort them out to the routes (say, by 9am, or 930, depending on station management), they go out that day. If Amazon shows up, say 10, we are already out on the street. As I have mentioned before, none of our shipping partners want usps to look good.
This isn't the USPS, and it isn't on the USPS.

This is the seller turning it over to an intermediary company who then sits on it for a full week to ten days before giving it to the USPS. Had the seller just given it directly to the USPS, it would show up in three days instead of two weeks.

/edit - one of the companies that is doing this is DHL, by the way. Apparently people hated them so much that they quit doing residential deliveries altogether. Now they just collect the packages and pass them on to the USPS. I forget the names of the others - there are several of these 'shipping partners' that don't bother to actually pass on the packages in a reasonable amount of time.

UPS Mail Innovations and FedEx Smartpost do the same thing, but they typically deliver to the local USPS right away, which is fine.

I looked it up online and for a really fat person like me with my family history I can expect to live another 6 years.
I expect to max out my credit before then so I may have to go a few years early.

She is also a lesbian, so looking at the menu doesn't mean I get to order anything.

My mail ended up going like this:

* 5/19 2:27PM label created San Jose, CA
* 5/21 7:18PM Accepted as USPS origin facility
* 5/21 8:33PM Arrived at USPS origin facility
* 5/21 8:36PM Departed USPS origin facility
* 5/22 8:11AM Arrived at USPS regional facility (SF Distribution Center)
* 5/22 8:11AM Departed USPS regional facility (SF Distribution Center)
* 5/24 10:00AM Arrived at USPS facility (SF 94103)
* 5/25 3:19AM Arrived at USPS reigional Facility (SF Distribution Center)
* 5/25 4:53AM Departed USPS regional facility (SF Distribution Center)

from there it went into USPS facility, post office, sorting, out for delivery, and finally, delivered on 5/25.

So basically, it seems the 5/22 San Francisco scans were either in error or it went to the wrong facility in San Francisco.

Apparently Amazon is under the impression that my purchase of a Queen size air mattress eight months ago was merely the first, tentative step in amassing a vast and varied collection of air mattresses and air mattress accessories.

2000 year old bad day

Archaeologists in Pompeii just unearthed the headless skeleton of an unfortunate man who appears to have died in the great explosion of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The man was decapitated by a large, 1-meter-long rock, researchers found.

Little B 9.4's karate class got cancelled tonight, so I had a chance to take her to dinner. She chose Noodles & Co., which is always a favorite.

After dinner, we went to the new dessert place that had opened next door, DoughCo, which is an edible cookie dough shop. There's a dozen or so flavors, and you order it just like ice cream (cup with 1, 2, or 3 scoops, a milkshake, waffle cone, etc.). She got two scoops of Snickerdoodle dough.

While the idea is novel enough, my brain couldn't quite parse the fact that I was eating cookie dough out of a cup instead of ice cream. Ever time I'd go to take a bite, my brain would be expecting something cold, and having warm dough instead was just...weird. It's also ridiculously filling. Of the two scoops, we barely finished one between the two of us, and took the rest home. I'll admit to being a bit horrified at some of the massive bowls of the stuff people were chowing down.

Seemed popular enough, with a line out the door on a random Wednesday. Will be interested to see how long that lasts. Not sure I'd go back myself, but would take B if she asks.

Cookie dough is very unsafe with raw eggs in it .

Quick google search is turning up stats that about 1 in 20,000 eggs actually has salmonella.

Rather than telling you not to eat cookie dough, Dough Co makes its safe to eat edible dough the star of every item it creates.

Not only is it safe to eat, it’s downright addicting! We use all natural ingredients and make from scratch daily using Heat Treated Flour and No Eggs so you can enjoy to your heart’s delight!

I didn't bother to check before going there, but just assumed this was the case. Can't imagine the business would have been allowed to open otherwise.

Speaking of snacks...

I spotted two different "snack mixes" at my local dollar store. The Buncha Crunch one (buncha crunch, cookie, white chocolate, peanuts) is okay. The Raisinets snack mix (milk chocolate raisinets, peanuts, shredded coconut, and peanuts) is bad. What happens is all the coconut is like dry as heck, and has no flavor. So it's like chewing paper.

Does the raw cookie dough place also sell pancake-batter milkshakes? Cake batter smoothies? I can imagine taking a bite or two of raw cookie dough. But a giant cup or cone of it? Is there a diabetes clinic right night door?

I can imagine enjoying this once, maybe twice, before my body started rejecting it on principle. You've got to have a staggeringly high sugar tolerance to gulp down the equivalent of a dozen cookies in raw dough.

Sweet! If my math is correct, that means the country can eat the next 5,000,000 eggs risk-free!

The chances of getting on a plane that has a bomb on it are something like 1 in a million.
But the chances of getting on a plane with 2 distinct bombs on it are something like 1 in 500 Billion.

This is why I always pack my own bomb.

It's funny how most people never think to just grab a stick of butter and dip it in sugar. The sugar sticks to the butter when you pull it out!

This is so much cheaper. You're being taken for a ride by Big Coronary, people!

Well it's either true or it isn't, so there's a 50/50 chance it's true.

Make that toast and mix sugar with cinnamon and that was a treat growing up.

Also when you say dip butter and sugar, that what it feels like I'm doing whenever I make Russian Teacakes.

Yes, you can actually get a cake batter shake.

I could handle a very small dose (about 3-4 spoonfuls) of the dough. Even Little B, who typically devours anything remotely sweet - tapped out after eating less than 1 scoop. Watching other people mow through 3 or 4 big scoops of dough was just...blech.
