Then you'd really hate seeing them at a Festival venue at a soccer stadium where they get second stage treatment to Jane's Addiction, Weezer, and Social Distortion.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Hard to say. I tend to wear out pretty easily in festival environments. I'm too type B or whatever they call it. Being around huge crowds without the ability to get away and relax by myself takes a lot out of me, so I tend to be done and exhausted about half way through a day and still can't get away from people. I haven't done a festival o' shows in close twenty years now. Add to that you'd probably have 5,000 people or more trying to pack a sideshow and you're right.
It wouldn't help that Jane's play a crowd of 50,000 like their playing to 500 and I'd go see Jane's first anyway, even they really only have 2 and half good albums that all came from close to 25 years ago or more (I'm too fucking young to be this fucking old)

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Motley Crue just announced their summer tour today, so i'll probably be going to see them along with Poison and the New York Dolls in July
i have to admit that i'm pretty surprised that they're actually going to tour with Poison given the significant amount of animosity between the two bands over the last 25 years...

I saw the New York Dolls for the tourlike thing they put on for Little Stevens Underground Garage five or six years ago. They were the headliners of about six acts for a long evening. They were by far the worst act of the night. Fortunately, the girl I was with thought so as well, so we escaped that horrid sound after about four songs... I really should see more shows with her. We did the same thing for Bob Dillon after she paid like $70 a seat for tickets, thank gawd. He was aww-ful.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
fortunately, it's not a big loss if the New York Dolls stink...i'll be there primarily for the Crue, but Poison should be fun as well. i've seen Motley and Poison in the past, and they both put on great rock shows although the styles are quite different.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Missed FM yesterday as I was sick. No idea how the show was. Glad I didn't get tickets ahead of time. I'm stoked for tonight, more so for Titus Andronicus than the Pogues, actually. I'm just afraid that I'm still a bit under the weather. Hopefully, I'll be good before tonight and an overdose of alcohol will kill all the germs. That's how it works, right?
Z Corn, look for me. Only I don't wear glasses anymore. And I have long hair. And long side burns. And am almost 80 pounds lighter.
Shit.
OK. I'll be the guy in jeans, a long T aqua colored underwear shirt with either black short sleeve oxford styled Dickies shirt.
Shit.
OK. Oh well. I'll be the guy up front for Titus Andronicus... Only it's a sold out show...
Ah well. Have a good time tonight.

Yeah, we'll look for you for sure. I remember what you look like. Hope you feel better tonight!
I hope Shane feels good tonight...
Not sure if you'll remember us. Not sure what we're wearing. I'll probably be in a black t-shirt and a flannel like everyone else there. My wife has curly auburn hair and looks Irish. She'll be wearing green or orange. Like everyone else there. Wearing Jammies right now as we enjoy Blue Mountain coffee with rum cream...yay for the day off!

I remember you but not clearly enough to pick you out of a crowd of 2500. I was going to take today off but I called in sick yesterday and two days out of the office is just too much right now.Z-Corn wrote:Yeah, we'll look for you for sure. I remember what you look like. Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Last week's show was good. TA were missing their fiddlist (out with a concussion they said) and were very short setted.
Tonight is the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcDFpH-VdNQ" target="_blank
Am going to have to give the Arkhams and the Parlotones a listen before Friday to see if I want to do either on of them tomorrow if I am awake and alive.
Skipping Dave Mason on Saturday to game and don't think Lords of Acid on a Sunday is a good idea. That spring feeling is definitely here even if there isn't a list of bands I'm chomping at the bit to see.
Oh, and I'm thinking I might fly out to Vegas to Richard Cheese on May 29th.

The Ravinia schedule was released today. I still haven't gone through it, but from the spam, one thing that caught my eye was Lord of the Rings (FOTR) with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and several choirs and vocalists to supply the sound track.

Went with a half dozen people who figured, "a night out for eight bucks, what the hell" and they weren't disappointed The Big Damn Band were on fire last night. I get the feeling they'll all be back come Easter when they open for The Reverend Horton Heat.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Maybe, just maybe, if they were playing in my backyard. And my yard is plenty big enough to have 30 people over at $5 a head; which is about the limit of what they're worth. These are acts that should be on the summer festival circuit, of which $5 admission is pretty standard.Xmann wrote:I got excited to see Def Leppard and Heart coming to Denver this summer. Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
went to see Yann Tiersen on a whim the other weekend. a large part of the crowd seemed extremely disappointed that he played nothing off the _Amelie_ soundtrack or whatever. given my unfamiliarity with all that, the material he did* play (almost all from the new album?) would slot in very well with a setlist by Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor or the like, so i was pleased well enough.

I saw Stephen Egerton play a show in Tulsa with a bunch of his buddies last weekend. My friend Brent follows him on Twitter, and he announced that he was just going to show up at a show at the Crystal Pistol in Tulsa. I drove up to see it, and it was definitely a fun time. Chad Price was there too, so it was like a mini-All concert. It was absolutely a blast with only 20 people in the audience.

So Cage the Elephant are coming back and sure enough they bumped up to the Fillmore and are at $30 a pop for a Tuesday night show. So they just got bumped off my wanna see list. That's what I get for skipping the last 4 times they were in town... at smaller venues... on the weekend... for $10... where I don't have to pay for parking... And bottled beer is $2.75 as opposed to $8 draught beer... I'd probably break down and do a $30 crazy expensive night at the Fillmore if it were on a weekend. These weeknight shows at these venues with these prices just flips my grumpy old man switch.

Current maybes... It's shaping up to be a slow year, but mostly for just Detroit. A lot[/i of bands are touring and totally skipping us for Columbus to Chicago move, so I'm really thinking about a lot things I normally wouldn't think about.

Pretty Crappy, really. Eddie Spaghetti should win over Peter Murphy but my sister really wants to see Peter Murphy, so we'll see.
But more importantly a lot these potentials are only potentials because there's not much I'm excited for (except for SCR, The Reverends, and Cake.)
Anyone catch any of the acts listed up top? Should I be making a particular effort for any of them? Some of them will get removed because of expense of weeknight status and some because I get distracted but I'd like to think I'm going to commit myself to more than 3 shows over the next 3 months (4 over 4 is you include TKK because I know both of the opening bands). That's just sad.

When they had their several-years-running Thanksgiving night stand at The Magic Stick we had no problem ditching our families for the holiday and getting a room to see Rachel sing. Like an angel that one!

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I have not. I have seen various members whose names I don't know play in a bunch of other bands. The just played this last weekend in the Blowout in Hamtramck but I didn't feel like getting out this last weekend much less dealing with the Blowout crowd. DC don't play that often any more, which is actually why I put them explicitly on the list now. I've been meaning to see them for years but it's easy for me to blow off just about everything.Z-Corn wrote:LordMortis wrote: Detroit Cobras Sat 6/18/2011

Looks like i won't be taking the wife and my son to see Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger.
$112 each for tickets.
I guess i'm just getting too old or something but i just can't for the life of me understand why anyone would pay +$100 for a concert ticket. Better yet, as much as i love Journey, who is paying $112 to see them? Same thing for Def Leppard and Heart....$150. Who in the hell pays this? I have the money, but i can think of alot more ways to spend +$100 than a concert.
I don't know, maybe i'm getting too cynical with my age. I'm just as content to pay $25 for other bands i like at smaller venues. Shit, i can go to 4 or 5 of those for the price of 1 big name artist. Thank goodness i live in a city where alot of the bands i really enjoy play here for less than $30 in small venues.
And don't get me started with the Live Nation fees.

That's insane. You should be seeing those bands for free with your admission to the county fair (and I say that as someone who has paid for Night Ranger tickets - multiple times).Xmann wrote:Looks like i won't be taking the wife and my son to see Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger.

One of the benefits of being at a large university is that once or twice a year they'll have free concerts, usually with decent bands (last year I saw The Thermals for free). Tomorrow they are bringing in Dr. Dog for a free concert.

This show happened Saturday night. It was as awesome as I expected it to be. The playlist:LordMortis wrote:I've got them on my list of maybe's. Tell me more about their live set. Otherwise, I'm sure the night will come and go and I'll ultimately "meh" them. I don't know much about their music, even. Was playing DF on Saturday and was going to blow off Eddie Spaghetti. My sister talked me in to going. Both of the opening bands did nothing for me. We were getting ready to and call the evening, meh, but Eddie Spaghetti was awesome. Country as it was meant to be.
CHACHACHA!
Lots and lots of meh stuff this week. I'll probably make it out Saturday but the question is will be seeing the Dizzy Dames or Question Mark and the Mysterions.

Just found out the Amon Amarth concert this weekend is open for all ages....including my 8 year old who is begging me to take him.
Haven't promised him one way or the other, but i'm seriously thinking of being the cool dad and taking him.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I keep telling myself I'm going to see the BMG touring group and I keep not doing it.
Paul Simon is something I'd like to do but the expense has always turned me off... Peter Gabriel (who is a list similar to Paul Simon for me) is touring the US this summer but skipping Detroit. I think I may have blown my opportunity to ever see him. Ah well.

HEY Z CORN!!!
You ever hear of Flatfoot 56 out of Chicago? They're gonna be Grand Rapids on June 6th at the Pyramid Room.
1) How is the Pyramid Room as a venue.
2) How are Flatfoot 56
3) Where can I get a cheap hotel room after the show around there?
So far very few bands are turning me on this year and especially there are very few summer concerts I'm stoked about so far, so I'm trying to find new things and even that's been a challenge so far, so I'm debating the three hour commute if only because it's on a Friday.

You mean The Pyramid Scheme...
And I can't give an opinion as the place isn't even open yet. Here's a good work-in-progress video from 2 days ago...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN3-rbaOErQ
Looks like it's gonna be nice! Capacity of 200 up front and 400 or so in the concert room. They've got Guided By Voices playing a two-night stand their opening weekend. Pretty good score there...
I've got pretty high hopes for the place. The owners/partners bring a good pedigree to the table. One side is a brother/sister duo who own THE BEST hipster bar in GR, The Meanwhile. I mean that just barely sarcastically, it really is a cool spot. And the other partner is a guy who owns Hopcat, twice voted one of the top 5 places in the country to get a beer. He also owns a speakeasy type bar, The Viceroy and a punk-rock jukebox vegan sandwich bar with vintage video games, Stella's.
Check out the other shows coming, nice lineup so far for the place still being 2 weeks from opening...

PM me if you're serious about getting a room, I can look into options for you.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I've been seeing the venue mentioned a lot I had no idea it's not open yet.
If I go, then I'm serious about getting a room. A 3 hour drive at 02:00 is not my idea of fun. It also allows me to get my drink on which isn't happening if I'm doing at 3 hour drive at 02:00.
Going to a new schwanky place adds to the appeal but also makes me fear not being able to get tix. So there will be some debating. I may just catch them in Toledo on Thursday instead. So now I have to go into thinking mode.

I saw Peter Gabriel the last time he hit the Palace and he was incredible. Sucks hes skipping Detroit this year. His shows are more of a production than a concert. If you get the chance to see him, even if a bit of travel is involved you should go, hes well worth it.LordMortis wrote:I keep telling myself I'm going to see the BMG touring group and I keep not doing it.
Paul Simon is something I'd like to do but the expense has always turned me off... Peter Gabriel (who is a list similar to Paul Simon for me) is touring the US this summer but skipping Detroit. I think I may have blown my opportunity to ever see him. Ah well.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Paul Simon is someone you should see at least once. I actually saw him solo then saw Simon and Garfunkel the "Old Friends" show a week later .LordMortis wrote:Paul Simon is something I'd like to do but the expense has always turned me off... I also saw him here August 1991.
