I'm a sucker for charts and stats and Spotify doesn't give me enough info - my lists come from last.fm, based on music I stream from Spotify, Apple, and YouTube, and occasionally play from CDs.
What are you listening to right now?

Great, I will try it. Spotify has the info but it's on 3 or 4 screens.

Classic Shoegaze. Technically not an instrumental as a drowned out vocal hits during the final minute.

Octoploid is the new band with members of Amorphis and Barren Earth. I almost gave it a miss entirely because of the incredibly stupid name, but this is really good stuff. Melodeath that is very reminiscent of "Tales From the Thousand Lakes"-era Amorphis. A fun mix of death, prog, folk, stoner doom, psychedelic, and even pirate metal with some funky organ grooves and even Gregorian chants thrown in for good measure.
In short: Really stupid band name, really great music.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Finally got around to listening to the new Black Crowes album yesterday. I was a big fan of the Crowes back in the day, but when they released the first single off this album my reaction was "meh". It kind of sounded like a song that didn't make the cut as filler for an early album. The rest of the album is pretty great, though. I'm guessing they released that song to remind people of the Black Crowes sound after so many years away, but it had the ironic effect of making me not excited for the album when I should have been.
That's my purse! I don't know you!

Bill Leeb from Frontline Assembly has his first solo album coming out in September. The first single off that album dropped today
It's basically just FLA with a different name. Which is fine (I adore me some FLA) but it seems odd for him to basically go do literally the exact same thing as his main band...only solo.

Wind Rose (the "dwarf metal" band) teamed up with Deep Rock Galactic for a song on their upcoming album. It's all incredibly silly (like everything they do), but is awfully catchy.

Those medleys were a lot more fun back in the 80's when I knew the original songs. I was only familiar with a couple of the songs in that one.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
‘Weird Al’ Yankovic on ‘Polkamania!,’ Why He Won’t Release Another Album
“Weird Al” Yankovic: I wanted to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of my last album by doing a medley of what I thought were a dozen of the biggest songs of the last 10 years. I just kind of went through the charts. Every song in the medley is a No. 1 song and pretty iconic. And they just seem like the likeliest candidates to me. As far as the order, you have to end strong with Taylor and start strong with Billie. Other than that, I had to play around with my accordion to see what chord progressions led to other chord progressions the easiest. So, it’s just a little bit of a puzzle, as it always is.
...
I said it at the time and I am sticking with it: Mandatory Fun is most likely going to be the last traditional album that I ever release. I just wanted to focus on other things. I haven’t retired from making music. My output in the last 10 years has not been terribly prolific but I’m still putting things out here and there. I am just tired of the album format because there were so many limitations for me, one being that a lot of my humor is topical. And if I get a great idea for a song and it’s topical, I then need to come up with 11 more songs to release the whole album. So, releasing singles seems to be a better way for me to go.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I knew 5, and 3 of them are on pretty regular rotation. I'd call that pretty good for an old man.YellowKing wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 9:19 pmAnd most of those songs were 5-10 years old.Skinypupy wrote:Those medleys were a lot more fun back in the 80's when I knew the original songs. I've been mostly using Spotify DJ for the last couple months but it is starting to get repetitive, even when it is playing recent stuff I don't usually listen to, it's the same songs over and over. It does surprise me occasionally when it goes back to the 90s and plays something I haven't thought about in decades.

I spent the day downloading all of my purchases from Amazon, since, as a lapsed subcriber, I can't play music that I purchased through their app in anything other than shuffle mode.

THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE THE ONE PLAYING THEM OVER AND OVER.
I switched to Spotify from Amazon Music because my friends all told me the algorithms were so much better, but it's the same. I'd say a good 90% of the songs it plays are things that are already in my liked songs list. And the playlists it generates are usually a good 75%.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I play my own playlist or (more frequently) select the albums I want to listen to. I switched from Amazon Music to Spotify because the former's preponderance of bootlegs made it a pain to browse artist catalogues. Also, I thought there would be more social interaction on Spotify. Turned out I was about a decade late for the second thing.YellowKing wrote: ↑Sun Jul 21, 2024 8:51 am I switched to Spotify from Amazon Music because my friends all told me the algorithms were so much better, but it's the same. I am on an XG kick. Their latest single is really good. Well, at least for the first 80%; it gets kind of slow and repetitive toward the end.
I kind of feel sorry for the group's singers. They are fine, but the rappers are on another level.

Heard a snip of this on the Godzilla & Kong movie, and it reminded me what a great song it is. 1982 - way ahead of it's time.
