Skinypupy my friend, you should have been in Denver last night.
Amon Amarth put on the best concert i've been too.....hands down. I got some nice HD videos i'll post in a few days. I was about 30 feet from the stage and it was unbelievable.
Played the entire new album and did an encore of 12 or more of their best hits. Truely an incredible show....still can't get over it.

Saw TV on the Radio at House of Blues in Boston this past Saturday. Great, great show!
This is the second time of seen them play live. For anyone who's at all interested in their music, I'd highly recommend getting out to see them live. It's well worth it!

Yeah, I've been hearing some amazing things about this tour. Wish I could have been there, looking forward to seeing the videos. Have to admit that I haven't really warmed up to the new album though. There's a couple songs on Sutur Rising that have a nearly identical song structure to ones on TotTG, which kinda turned me off. As I heard it put somewhere else, Amon Amarth is the AC/DC of death metal...they simply put out nearly the same music over and over again. It's good, but the predictability gets a little old sometimes.Xmann wrote:Skinypupy my friend, you should have been in Denver last night.

I'll second this. TVotR was the opening act when I saw Bauhaus/NIN, and they damn near stole the entire show. It marked the only time I've ever immediately run out and purchased a CD from an "opening" band.Saw TV on the Radio at House of Blues in Boston this past Saturday. Great, great show!

I'm seeing Polkadot Cadaver on May 15, only a few days after their new album hits. Pretty psyched for that one.

Speaking of TV on the Radio
TV On The Radio has confirmed via the band’s website that bassist Gerard Smith has passed away at the age of 36.
“We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” the group’s message says. “Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.”

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Just yesterday I bought tickets for a July 14 Berkshire Theater Festival performance of The Who's Tommy (sans The Who, of course). It will be interesting to see this show done primarily by actors rather than musicians. Should be fun, anyway.
We're also going to see a Charlie Chaplin movie accompanied by a solo guitarist. We've enjoyed a couple of other "live" movies at Mass MOCA in previous years.
If the weather's nice we'll see The Sweetback Sisters at the Clark -- a free concert on the lawn. We saw a bluegrass band there last year.
Haven't decided yet what we're going to do at WTF this year -- either a late-night cabaret emceed by Lewis Black or a Lewis Black stand-up show. Depends on how our schedule works out. Neither of us find him very funny so we're leaning toward the cabaret.
And of course we'll see the BSO at Tanglewood if the weather cooperates.
And that's our entire 2011 concert lineup.

Off to go see Jackson Browne acoustic show tonight in Grand Rapids. I'm pretty geeked about this show, love his stuff, love his live style.

Pinback is going to be back in Dallas in a few weeks . . . I'm awfully excited.
In fact, since they're swinging through Texas on a weekend, I might also see them in Austin.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I got word that The Decemberists are playing Interlochen in July. I got pretty excited by that as I read recently they plan on a 3 or 4 year hiatus after wrapping up this next year of touring. I really need to see them before that...
Then, after checking into pre-sale tix for that show, I found out they are going to play here in town on Monday! A killer show just fell into my lap!
Monday's show is opened by Justin Townes Earle. He's Steve Earle's son. I've been a huge Steve Earle fan ever since seeing him play in 1999 at a UAW picnic we crashed. Gonna be a fun night!

No looking good for concerts at the moment. I might go see Buckwheat Zydeco at the record store, but not much coming that I can go with anyone to. Little bands like The Sharkskins and Ten Foot Polecats that I'll go to see by myself.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
We just got back from seeing Randy Travis in Myrtle Beach. We took my in-laws as a surprise combo Mother's Day/Father's Day present. Awesome show. He's about to release a 25th anniversary CD celebrating 25 years of recording, so he was giving the audience a sneak preview of some medleys they're doing on the CD, a couple of new songs, some "missing" lyrics from "Diggin' Up Bones," etc. He told a bunch of funny stories and jokes throughout the night, and the crowd was really great with a lot of banter back and forth. His band kicked ass and his voice still sounds like it's coming right off the record. A good time was had by all!

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I'm pretty well uninspired and the show seem has been disappointing. Eddie Spaghetti was probably the best thing in the last few months and even that was merely pretty good. I think it's time to expand beyond my normal music or to take a break from the live scene. I'm not sure which. The shame is that this is normally and historically the best time of the year for live music in Detroit. And to add insult to injury the weather completely sucks.
But here's the latest list of stuff most of which I'll miss because it's on a weeknight or I'm just not that excited about it. I was finally going to see Clutch for the first time (again) but I guess they sold out the day tickets went on sale.
The only thing I'm committed to right now is Cake as I already have ticket. Ah well.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
We saw Leon Russell last night, and he was even better than expected. Seeing him lately you'd think the voice was weaker, the piano was more laid back, and the band would be doing most of the heavy lifting. But from the moment he sat down and tore into Delta Lady, he sounded exactly like he did 40 years ago. Even with a stripped down band (2 guitarists & rhythm section) he kicked ass for 90 minutes. If you have he chance to see him, don't pass it up.
Most surprising part of the evening was that the guy working the t-shirt concession was the lead guitarist. Poor bastard probably has to drive the bus as well.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
Got stuck in the balcony for Cage the Elephant last night. It was probably best to keep the evening low key, especially for such a high energy band. I'd be done this morning if I were hanging out on the main floor. Though, getting stuck in the balcony reminded me it had been years since I'd seen a large show much less one where I watched from 50 yards away from the performance. I find that there's is absolutely nothing left for me at arena style of venue. Maybe I'd change my tune if I got to see one like Peter Gabriel where the show is as much theatrics as it is a half dozen people on stage playing their instruments together.
Manchester Orchestra were surprisingly good.
Cake tonight. Hoping I can get enough work done to take a vacation day tomorrow and not feel like I need to sit up in a balcony again so I can survive Thursday at work.
Thinking about another weeknight show next week. Then I have to figure out if it will be Man Man or the Limousines, both next Wednesday. I'm also debating She Wants Revenge next Friday. Crossed Crash Test Dummies off the list. If I do a weeknight show it will be the Limousines for Man Man.

I was at the Citrix Synergy conference this week and Train played the big end of week party. I wasn't expecting a great deal, as other than a couple of songs I'm not all that familiar with them.
However, they actually blew me away. They really did put on a fantastic show. Surprising covers like Rihanna's "Umbrella," Led Zep's "Ramble On," and mixing stuff like the Doobies "Black Water" in with their track. Lots of audience interaction, bringing girls up on stage to sing and dance, etc. Lead singer was a funny guy and sang his ass off. He also was a good sport and let people get pics taken with him during the show. A jolly good time was had by all! Whoda thunk it?

Random factoid: The lead singer of Train (Pat Monahan) is also the voice of Driver Dan on the pre-school show Driver Dan's Story Train, which happens to be my 2-year-old daughter's favorite show. Thought that was pretty cool.YellowKing wrote:I was at the Citrix Synergy conference this week and Train played the big end of week party. My buddy Joe just gave me and my wife tickets to see The Moody Blues at Ravinia on Saturday. While I wouldn't have bought tickets to see them myself, I can't deny that "Long Distance Voyager" and "Nights in White Satin" used to be in heavy rotation on my turntable.

Re: Summer concerts....who you seeing?
I saw them in 85 (I think) for "The Other Side of Life" with the Fixx and they were still pretty good then. They have 11 or 12 good albums to choose from. My biggest problem with their live show was that a lot of my favorite music of theirs was from phases of their musical career were band members were fighting and the pretend that music doesn't exist. You'll never hear anything off Octave or The Present live and they seem to forget that they got their start with "Go Now" from The Magnificent Moodies. At this point I'd fear that they'd want to push a bunch of their stuff post The Present and they really lost me going forward but for free, I'd jump out and see them.hentzau wrote:My buddy Joe just gave me and my wife tickets to see The Moody Blues at Ravinia on Saturday.
