I still say, "Oven door!" when I open it even though only my wife and I live in our home.
I wasn't ever a cook or on the line, so that is as foreign to me as saying "behind you" compulsively to most people when I walk behind them, even those I don't know.
I do that too but I usually say, "Sneaking by!"

Brian, take notes.

NBC News
An Indiana woman was found dead Wednesday night with a snake around her neck in a residence that Indiana State Police are describing as a "reptile home."
...
There were approximately 140 caged snakes in the home, [Sgt. Kim] Riley said, adding that no one lived at the residence.
...
Riley said the individual who found the woman did not want to be identified, but was able to remove the snake from her neck.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, Riley said.

That seems like you're being filmed for a reality TV show. I cannot believe in 2019 this kind of behavior is routine in corporate America.

That's just mean. At MIT, the pecking order goes faculty > administration > students > adjuncts > furniture > staff > office supplies > contractors. Wife is staff and I'm a contractor; if there even are holiday parties, we aren't invited.

This is pretty funny. Would have been horrible though if she was hurt worse than she thought and they couldn't tell.

https://www.wrcbtv.com/story/41256673/w ... responders
Woman in 'Carrie' costume totals car, terrifies first responders
'Everyone who was a first responder thought I was dead,' said Sidney Wolfe, 20, who hit a deer driving home from an event dressed as 'Carrie,' the character from the Stephen King novel.
She said she warned a 911 dispatcher that when police and medics arrived, she would look more mangled than she actually was. "I said to the responder that I am in full Halloween makeup and don't want them to be frightened," she said.

But the memo wasn't relayed. Wolfe wrote in a now-viral tweet that "everyone who was a first responder thought I was dead," adding an apology in all caps.

She said an additional officer who showed up later while she was "making conversation with people" came over to the group imploring, "I hate to interrupt but don’t you guys think she needs medical assistance?”

Obviously, the article isn't "funny", but especially as a snake owner, this made me snicker. From the article:
"She was apparently there checking on her snakes," he said. "For whatever reason, she apparently got the snake out and she was doing what people do with snakes."

We have a contractor who sits on our floor (outside counsel, but assigned just to us so she works out of our office). She's included in as much as possible, including a happy hour (offsite) that we had a few days ago. She's also always invited to the monthly birthday party and all that good stuff. There are some things she doesn't get to do (like go to the legal conference for all the attorneys in the company), but she's otherwise treated as a real person and a co-worker.

I lucked out today. I happened to be on the other side of town where Im not normally at and visited the big Goodwill store on that side. Went for some sleep shorts. Hey .99 cent sleep shorts rock. As I was leaving I decided to check out the media section since for some reason its past the checkouts on the way to the door.

The first thing I saw was The Cars - CandyO. OMG. It even has the inner sleeve too.

Its the same as this one...

Then I spotted and grabbed this.....

Both for a total of another .99 cent. Tomorrow everything store wide is half off but I wasn't going to let Candy O sit there. I do have a record player stereo but its been packed away for 30 years. Its here someplace. Yes easier to not bother but if I ever do dig it out these will sound great.

I have seasonal depression on top of wife death. Ive had this stuff for a decade or so. it got better for a while but started coming back a couple years ago. Thought of suicide years ago. I hate cold weather because theres nothing good about it since Im not a child any longer. Plus days get dark so early here around 5 / 5:30.

Days in summer are around 14 hours of light. Winter is about 10 hours of light. SO to Blackhawk as well who is fond of contradicting all my posts lately...yes the days ARE shorter...as in light.

My sleep habits are due to insomnia. I have no 'habit' really. I can no longer control my sleep. I no longer am a night owl. Hate night. I try to sleep so I can be up at 8am with the sun.

And yes it sounded harsh.

EDIT: For BH...June 1st sunrise / sunset times. 6:29:03 am 8:57:58 pm ...... Dec 1st 7:30:01 am 5:27:31 pm

I'm familiar with axial tilt. You seemed to suggest that the time change had some impact on the length of the day (you said something similar a few days ago that someone else commented on.) Tomorrow is not the start of shorter days. June 22nd was the start of shorter days. September 24th was the start of days being shorter than nights.

/edit - and if you are seeing my contradicting you as an attack, I apologize. I'll try and avoid that.

I didn't think I needed to separate shorter days as day and night. Ive always just assumed days or day meant day time. Thats on me and how it is around here I guess.

And the sniping is probably on me as well. I have that habit of taking things that way..as my history can show.

Maybe I just revel in the crap of life too much. Again its probably me. The less daylight days and cold are already affecting my personality and sleep and no telling what else. Plus my wife was sick this time of year last year before she even had the stroke that took her in the time coming up. So Im extra blargh this year. Dont have her to help me this time. All on me. Ill get through.

EDIT: No pain meds all year either so pain grumpiness too :P

I swear I got my check on the 1st...usually 3rd.....and theres enough left to pay the 3 bills to go and leave me $15 for toilet paper and hope I dont need dog food the rest of the month. So Ill be sitting here all month in the house again except maybe one day I need that toilet paper or rob a dog food delivery truck...joking. Maybe thats part of my mood...cabin fever lol.

Anyone else have a love / hate relationship with mornings like me?

Ive never been a morning person. Not in my entire life. As a kid my bedtime was 9pm on school days and midnight on the weekend. I always wanted to stay up later . Always. The weekends were especially sucky because midnight is when Dr Shock would come on tv. It was a local horror themed show where the guy was dressed sorta goth / vampire / Victorian era tophat and such and had a zany group of friends. Think non sexy Elvira.

After I was an adult I could stay up as long as I wanted of course. In my 20s I completely flipped my time and stayed up all night and slept all day. In my late 30's though I switched back. And Im still trying to switch back lol. Its so easy to me to stay up longer and longer and sleep longer and longer until Ive gotten to a point where its tough to keep moving that around. It stops and I cant circle the clock back to normal.

I HATE getting up in the mornings. I just cannot wake up easy. It takes me an hour to get up. Im SO groggy and my eyes are dry and hurt for light to hit me. Im like a vampire. In high school Id fall asleep in 3rd period and sleep it through. The teacher gave up and just let me sleep that math class off. Still got 100s on my 6 month tests. I hate getting up.

BUT I LOVE being up in the mornings. I love the clean cool fresh air. Its so crisp. I love the sun being new in the sky with me.Best of all I get more light in the day. I mean its longer to me. I love to sleep to say noon but then I hate it because Ive wasted a big chunk of day in my mind.

First, let me say that I totally get that. I completely understand seasonal depression and the daylight hours in winter are depressing. I get that entirely and I apologize for taking your brain down that reply - because that's not what I was trying to talk about.

I was trying to point out that the DST rules (moving the time on the clock) are not the source of your pain - as that's just a number you could ignore. It's not the source of seasonal depression.

I guess at the heart of it is this... you said : "Tomorrow is the start of shorter days again." and that is how it feels to people that are 'a slave to the clock'. They get off work and now it's dark... etc. But you have always posted about how your sleeping habits are all over the place and you will often post here at all hours, you don't have a morning commute to make, etc.
So - your comment sounded weird - coming from you.

Daehawk wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:06 am And yes it sounded harsh.
Didn't want to. I just wanted to hash out the DST part of it, and you not being a slave to the clock. I completely understand the seasonal depression side of things.

Work or not I try to be a day person. Im not born to be one it seems but I keep trying hehe.

Not related to sleep or DST.....I have to set my 6 month check up with my urologist for post surgery look. I hope its all clear as Im so sick of hearing from the kidney chorus. I dont get a feeling of any stones now but the one that was operated on will sometimes give me a feeling or a pain at the incision site on my back to down deep into the kidney. Not bad and not long. Mostly is I lay on the bed and have the blanket a little balled under me or I move a twist way. Not often. My mind tells me my kidney healed to my back skin lol...but if that was the case Id think it would hurt all the time when I moved plus the doc didn't mention it at my 2 week visit. I think its just a nerve in that area. So hoping all is well.

I see people on this board repeatedly use the phrase "that is just puppies" (or something to that effect)…

They are saying that something sucks. That something is bad. But this board is the only place I've seen it.

Urban Dictionary doesn't support the definition (Accept in a "I finished one homework assignment, but still have 4 puppies to do..." way - which is NOT how it's used here).

What gives?

Why is this a phrase that many of you use? Why are puppies bad?

I remember a long while back, when I first saw it used here - I thought the person meant that "the problem was very easily handled" - but it then became clear it meant that the "the problem really was a bad one".
