I don't have any desire to buy and keep and house and maintain the equipment at this time. If I did, I'd probably get an exercise bike first and those are easier to manage, generally speaking. It might be time to look around the 2nd hand stores again. Or not. I think I'm looking at guided alternate exercises via youtube right now rather than equipment stuff.Zaxxon wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 11:07 am Don't know if it's an option for you, but long ago I bought a treadmill desk that allows me to walk while working (or while surfing the web, etc). I only go around 2.8 mph but I can zone out and suddenly I've got thousands of 'free' steps knocked out without 'using' any time to do it.

Re: Running
After tearing my meniscus a second time last October I finally ran more than 3.1 miles. I got 4 last weekend and felt pretty good. My knee felt like it was burning on the car ride home but the rest of the day it was fine. It felt good on the run (which was a limestone trail). Overall, I've only run about a dozen times since last October and half of those were races we signed up for. I have done plenty of biking though.
My HR never got anywhere near 170. That's rather high. I tend to be 130-150 for a 10 minute pace.

Re: Running
In the last 7 days I have run 81.3 miles and my long run on Sunday was 21.01 miles at a 9:09 min/mile average pace. I impressed myself and now wonder if I could get up to 100 miles in a 7 day period. I think the only thing stopping me is having the time - probably need 2 hours a day for 6 days and then 3.5 hours on Sunday for my long run (thinking to go for 22 miles). So thinking I might try the week of Thanksgiving or maybe Christmas as I'll be on vacation those weeks and the kids will be off as well.

That's crazy impressive! I'm hitting about 30 miles a week right now, with an average distance of about 5 miles a run. I've slowed down a lot, too. The 8:30 minute mile is my new 7:30!stessier wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2024 11:40 am In the last 7 days I have run 81.3 miles and my long run on Sunday was 21.01 miles at a 9:09 min/mile average pace. Re: Running
Very impressive Stessier!
I think at my peak, when I was running half-marathons, I would do somewhere around 20 miles in a week and that took a lot of effort to manage. I never seriously thought about a marathon partly because the required training takes so much time. Fitting 80+ miles into a week is a crazy level of commitment...great job!

Re: Running
That's exactly why my wife and I stopped training for a marathon. So much time for the two of us and one day when we just finished 16 miles she said she was thinking about stopping marathon training and just doing a half marathon. The next week our longest run was 6 miles and we never discussed another marathon again. 80 miles is very impressive but the only way I'm getting that kind of mileage in is on my bike.disarm wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2024 2:10 pm Very impressive Stessier!

Yeah, that's crazy impressive stessier! Good job!
At my peak, back around 2016-2018, I had lots and lots of 30+ mile weeks, and a handful of 40+ mile weeks. These days, 20-30 per week is an achievement, and 30+ means I'm really motivated.
That said - I finished marathon #34 (and state #32) a couple of weeks ago. I knocked West Virginia off my list with a decent time just over 4:30. Best thing was I felt really good at the end, even managing to avoid blisters/chafing. Next up - North Carolina in February. Then, researching races in the last 17 states and fitting them into as few years as possible.

Re: Running
Yeah, to all of you.
What do you guys to do stretching warm up and cool downs? I'm down to one or two days a week of jogging 4 16 minute intervals with short walks in between to reset and my lower legs are not reacting well to this. I do a bit of aerobic walking every morning to warm up and loosen my muscles and then I do cool down walk after followed by stretching by leaning forward against my calves and hamstrings, pulling back on my feet on one foot, propping a foot on a table and leaning forward as best I can, and then using a door way to assist trying to get somewhere in the same zip code as touching my toes.
I don't and won't run like any of you but I still need a body that reacts better than mine does to the stresses I put on it.

Re: Running
With my hips being as trashed as they are, I have to stretch pretty thoroughly before and after every run. In addition to a half dozen hip stretches, I also stretch quads, calves, hamstrings, and shoulders/back for each run. Usually around 15 minutes before and after, sometimes longer.

Have never done much stretching. I really should start now that the years are flying by. But I just never get to it. Just like strength training. I should really do more of both.

Re: Running
I'm pretty sure I just had my slowest run ever, so I think I know how Mike Tyson feels. First mile 11:03 and only went a half mile after that.
In theory, my max heart rate should be 168. First mile I was a steady 173 and at the end peaked at 187. No particular discomfort, just sweaty and tired. A decade ago I would break 190 regularly but I was also running 7-8 minutes miles.

Re: Running
That number of marathons is really impressive. Marathons have always just wrecked me. My long run today was 22 miles and the idea of going for another 40-ish minutes would have killed me. I hope you are able to complete your plan for 50!Baroquen wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2024 10:49 pm Yeah, that's crazy impressive stessier! Good job!

Re: Running
I'd recommend keeping it simple. Consider using a warm-up routine similar to the one demonstrated in the video below, right before you take your walks:LordMortis wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2024 7:56 am Yeah, to all of you.

Re: Running
I already work on the stiffness part every morning. I've recently tried some introduction to Pilates work, trying to find a regimen for what your video talks about "the wrong muscles doing the wrong job." I'm mainly doing that to try and help my back but I like what they are selling, generally and philosophically. I also might try some yoga intro stuff again, trying to find the right fit. Though again, so far the Pilates thing is gelling right for me.
I'll keep this around though and give it a try. What's another couple of minutes when I'm already committing so much time and energy to this.

Re: Running
I haven't done pilates but Yoga is a pretty good low-impact workout that helps with stretching and mobility. We generally do 1-2 sessions per week. I don't generally do much warm-up pre-run and about the only post-run cool down is walking. Probably not a good role model in that respect.

Re: Running
When I was getting the kind of jogging I do in 4 days a week my knee started down the wrong path. I've cut back to one or two days and today I thought I'd change my plan and push myself a bit harder. I cut my intervals down to 3 jogs but moved pushed my times to 20 minutes per jog. So today I finished in 65 minutes and my hour mark was 9100 steps and 5.5 miles. With my mindfulness on breathing and posture, I believe I could jog a straight 5k now but I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing because I'm comfortable with it. My biggest problem is now that I am only doing my jogs once or twice a week my daily steps floor is kind of a pain and I really don't enjoy walking my neighborhood anymore, even a little. And I even get grumpy in the parks when supposed clearly marked "no dog" and "no cyclist" nature preserves have both cyclists and dogs off leashes. Jogging keeps my mind off of other people being who they are.
