I found Monsterpocalypse boosters for 3 bux at a discount store, but my wife slapped my hand like a child sneaking cookies...
"Where are you off to?"

But...but...your buddy Smoove would like them!
Do I have to repeat the story about how I clearly remember seeing the Heroscape figures and sets in the TRU Deep Discount bins for 75% off back in 2006 and just walking right by?

I don't even remember how many base sets I picked up when they were on clearance... But my wife pointedly reminded me of the boxes full of mini figures of various games in storage. Including about an entire bookshelf of Heroscape.

Seppe and I are playing tonight so we'll stop by the gamestore to see if it's in. Then I'm going to try and convince him to help me assemble enough minis from Samurai Battles to play the intro scenario for the game.Smoove_B wrote:Well? For some reason I thought it didn't come out until July, but I'm down with an earlier release. While I'm excited for the new stuff, I'm going to miss the small container for the base game. ...ah hell, I'll be at the store tomorrow night and every night after that until I get it. Who am I kidding?
I saw a ton of cheap boosters for Monsterpocalypse at Origins last weekend. I'm sure there'll be even more at Gencon. If you shoot me a list of what you need before the con, I can try to find them for you while I'm there.

I'm actually planning on hitting a regional gaming convention next month and MonPoc is on their schedule --I'm hoping to pick up some figures then, but thanks. We just dropped by the show last year to scope it out but this time we're planning on staying overnight and playing games with strangers. Should be interesting...

I think it would be awesome if Fantasy Flight Games put out an updated & expanded rulebook for Arkham Horror that includes the rules for all the expansions...just sayin'

It'd be 300 pages long.

Man, FFG's rule books are usually so disorganized, I can't even imagine one that was that long. I sometimes have a hard time finding the rule I need in one of their 30-page books.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played a 2 player game of Stone Age last night. I like it but I find two things slightly annoying:
1) The scoring for civ cards is a little too fiddly in my opinion.
2) There are a couple of buildings that give ungodly amount of VP if chosen and used with gold. Seppe scored like 70 points in three turns with them. And I couldn't get to them because he was either the first player or they were buildings that were revealed on my turn. I'm debating taking them out of the game for my next try, but I want to see how a 4 player game plays out first.
Then we put the Quarriors expansion on the table. First thing I have to say is that the expansion is really overpriced. It's a VERY light box because it's mostly air. You pay 45 bucks for just a few new cards/dice, streamlined rules and trays to store dice. Considering that you got almost as much with the last expansion and a bit cheaper, it's not a value imho.
Aside from that, I really like it. The new variant in which you have to cull a scoring die before you get glory points for it adds a great dynamic to the game. Combined with the variant rule that you can buy 2 die during phase 4, it doesn't really slow the game down much yet adds some impetus to buy new dice every turn as you're constantly cycling through your scoring dice. If it weren't such a needlessly expensive expansion, I would have no trouble recommending it to everyone without reservation.

How much freakin' Gold did he have?
And "revealed on my turn"?
Maybe I have to double check the 2player rules as we haven't played with less than 3.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
If I buy a building and then flip the next one up as the rules dictate, I can't immediately place my guy on it, but the other player can because it's now his turn. That's what I meant by "on my turn".
When I say "fiddly" I mean that you have quite a few different ways to score with them. Not a big deal really and it ended up not hurting our enjoyment of the game, but for such a simple game it added a bit more to think about it than I was comfortable with when watching what my opponent was doing. Again, purely a personal prejudice.
As for the amount of gold we had, it doesn't take much to get large points on the 1-7 buildings. The 4 of any only requires 4 gold too and returns 24 VP. Late game it was a rush to put down our guys on gold as our first move on our turns.
Like I said, I think a 4 player game needs to be played before I start to think about house ruling this one. The 2 player may not be a good reflection on the game's mechanics.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played 1989 again yesterday evening, this time via Vassal. The game is definitely a lot of fun. The Vassal module worked well, though unlike the Twilight Struggle module, it doesn't really process anything for you - each player has to roll the die, figure out which modifiers apply, correctly process the result, and often manually move the cards around. But once we figured out how to work all that, it was pretty smooth and bug-free.
The game ended in a communist victory, as the government in Poland survived two power struggles, and the governments in Hungary and Bulgaria survived one each. The two games I've played so far have really reinforced how hugely important Poland is - since it provides 3 points multiplied by the number of power struggles there, that's 3 points for surviving one, 6 points for surviving two, 9 points for three, etc. Given that you win at -+20 points, that's huge (in particular, if the democrat player doesn't topple Poland within 3 power struggles, I'd think victory would be virtually impossible).
Given that, it seems like it's best to virtually ignore Hungary (worth only 1 point per power struggle), at least until Poland is essentially full of influence points. Also, going for 'domination' may be less important than locking up various leader types, given that the big points are more in holding onto power rather than having domination.

I think there's some confusion going on or it might just be that the dynamic of the new cards revealed is way stronger in two player game.
1st Reveal all new buildings and whatever those other cards are called.
2nd Go around in order placing guys until no one has guys to place.
3rd Each player resolves all their meeple's actions in any order they want starting with the first player.
4th Feed your meeples.
5th Pass the first player.
6th Go to 1st.
Probably. I like the fiddliness of the game, I guess. With the expansion, however, I would agree that is "fiddly" enough that I would never player as a family game or with non gamers. When I say "fiddly" I mean that you have quite a few different ways to score with them. Not a big deal really and it ended up not hurting our enjoyment of the game, but for such a simple game it added a bit more to think about it than I was comfortable with when watching what my opponent was doing. That's one strategy. And part of that strategy depends on getting (x) looking buildings to dump gold on. OTOH, there's an opportunity cost of putting five guys on gold to try and get three or four gold vs. putting them on wood and then cleaning up on the VP cards. As for the amount of gold we had, it doesn't take much to get large points on the 1-7 buildings. The 4 of any only requires 4 gold too and returns 24 VP. Late game it was a rush to put down our guys on gold as our first move on our turns.
I can't tell if it's your style of game or if the it's the natural dynamic of the 2 player game (3 players was fine) but the building flip just doesn't seem like it should be that much a game decider. Myabe you guys see something in the game way more clearly than we do and we'll be "meh" it when we make your discovery.Like I said, I think a 4 player game needs to be played before I start to think about house ruling this one. The 2 player may not be a good reflection on the game's mechanics.

Plus, resources don't go away at the end of the turn. I never said he used 4 gold each turn, I just said he had enough when those buildings became available to get the most out of them.

The only changes in 2 Player, rulewise:LordMortis wrote:hepcat wrote:If I buy a building and then flip the next one up as the rules dictate, I can't immediately place my guy on it, but the other player can because it's now his turn. That's what I meant by "on my turn".

The 3 Spots (Food prod, Meeple prod, Tool Prod) - only 2 may be filled
The Wood/Stone/Brick/Gold - only one PLAYER can be in each
So the game can be cutthroat as hell, by blocking out your opponent with a single Meeple.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
and you only put out two stacks of 7 buildings.
I'm not disparaging the game as we really enjoyed it and definitely plan on playing again. I just felt that a few of the buildings were a bit overpowered...and unfortunately came up 3 times in one game at points where I couldn't get to them. Maybe if they'd come up when I could reach them, I'd be singing the praises of those same buildings.
P.S. I can see from where Lords of Waterdeep got its primary inspiration after playing Stone Age.

I was not enamored with Stone Age the time I played it, for some of the reasons Hep mentions.

I quite liked Stone Age, truth be told. It's a nice worker placement game that marries the theme to gameplay quite well I thought. I daresay even more so than Lords of Waterdeep, although I also love that one.

If you have Stone Age, though, I've heard a lot of comparisons between the two games (can't say myself, having never played SA).
(And I just bought a set of these for my copy of LoW.)

Is it 30 bucks for a painted set of one of the resources? i.e. fighters, for example. Or 30 bucks for a complete replacement of all the resources? i.e. fighters, wizards, rogues and clerics.

Taught my parents Stone Age tonight, Dad was digging it (and nearly won), Mom says it comes in second behind Settlers. Son and I still loving the game.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Went to a local thrift store to drop off a couple of old canes and walkers that I came across while cleaning out my garage. Poked my head into the toy and game closet there, and in amongst the piles of puzzles and kids VHS tapes, I came across a copy of Jutland in pretty decent shape, box wise. Opened it up, did a cursory scan of the contents...basic and advanced rule books, tons of ships, player boards, range markers, area markers, and status pads in the box. Even still has the original AH ad flyer in it. Box itself is a little worn, with one split corner. Still has the original price sticker on the box - $5.95 from SportMart. It looks to me, based on the box size info on BBG, that it's the original 1967 printing.
Paid $1.80 for it. No clue if I'll ever play it. But for the cost of a coke? I'll take that in a heartbeat!
