That's exactly what I meant. It was a complete and utter mess despite the Oscar attention it ended up getting.

Ah, got it. Looks like the nominations were best supporting actress for Glenn Close, so at least the shitty screenplay wasn’t rewarded. What the hell was Ron Howard thinking? :?

I liked Hit Man. The messages on the phone in her face were brilliant.

I dunno. He's usually much more solid than that! And I thought Amy Adams would be refreshing in a different kind of role, but instead she was annoying. It was based on a controversial novel from a controversial author might have something to do with it.

So, I think the screenplays are the problem with most Netflix movies. They don't seem to have a lot of polish. They probably don't spend a lot of time on them before shooting.

That trailer was funnier than expected. I got an email a few days ago from The Oatmeal cartoonist saying that Netflix renewal decisions depend upon how many viewers watch a whole season to the end. He asked that viewers stick with it if we start it. I think I will, after I finish Getting On.

Getting On had three seasons about 10 years ago. It's a dark comedy starring Alex Borstein and Laurie Metcalf about the staff of a geriatric ward in a run-down hospital. Took a few episodes to draw me in but I'm quite enjoying it now. Alex Borstein played Suzie in The Marvelous Mrs Mazel.

I expected to hate Exploding Kittens, but I watched the first episode because I like Ellis. I found it amusing enough.

I saw the first one and thought it was mildly amusing, but doubt I will watch more.

Is the show kid appropriate? The twins enjoy the game and might be interested in this.

It's rated TV-14 in the US, according to IMDB.

This is a tough one to answer. On the one hand, you have JeffV who says his kids think the Hostel films are light comedies, on the other hand you have humans. I would say watch an episode and see if it's okay.

I have a habit of taking people's half hearted/damning with faint praise reviews and imagining them as movie promos or brand advertising:

Exploding Kittens!

For some reason, I like to get myself drowsy right before bedtime with half hour animated comedies. I usually use reruns of Family Guy, American Dad and other shows like that to do so. It just puts me into a relaxed mood and I get drowsy enough to go to bed and fall asleep. It's like emptying my mind of all the garbage of the day so I can sleep.

Exploding Kittens fits into that niche for me.

One of my favorite reviews ever written was for a horror film years ago. I can’t remember which one because it wasn’t very good to begin with. But the review started with the line “I’ve never seen a more relaxing horror film in my life.”

Ooooh, Patton Oswalt and one of the creators of Community are bringing Dark Horse Comics supervillain satire Minor Threats to Netflix.
First published by Dark Horse Comics in 2022, Minor Threats is a four-issue miniseries that centers around Twilight City, a city full of suerpowered heroes and villains. The main character is Playtime, the now-grown kid sidekick of her supervillain mother, who commits crimes with deadly mechanical toys. The heroes and villains of the city have an uneasy truce until the maniacal villain Stickman kills Kid Dusk, the partner of the Batman-like hero Insomniac. Now the whole supervillain community is in danger, unless Playtime and the regulars at the supervillain bar she frequents can get Stickman themselves. Along the way, they encounter characters on both sides of the law, and are undermined by a traitor in their ranks. The series has since spawned a sequel, Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down, and two spinoffs; The Alternates, about a team of low-level superhumans who became the greatest heroes of an alternate world; and Barfly, which stars a Brundlefly-like insectoid villain who recurs in Minor Threats.
Hopefully it's not TOO much like The Boys.

Have any of you watched Eric? It's a brilliant show, and I could maybe see Benedict Cumberbatch get nominated for an emmy for his role. He plays the creator and puppeteer of a Sesame Street-like children's TV show. He has aggressive tendencies and he's not that nice to his son, who ends up running away and declared missing after a particularly nasty argument. His son likes to draw and he conjures up a new character for the show, a big furry Sully-like Monster. Cumberbatch's character Vincent starts to envision the Monster helping him out searching for his son. It's dark, but well-written.

I was excited to see Season 2 of Kleo on Netflix. But after 2 episodes, I've decided to give up on it. I think it's a combination of 2 years since the first season, and being in a different headspace. Or maybe it's simply that the second season isn't very good, but I felt like there was just way too much going on. Too many characters to keep track of, too many absurdities, to the point I had trouble figuring out what was going on.

The recent deal with AMC has enabled the superb Monsieur Spade mini series to show up on Netflix. I highly recommend it!

The dialog in Monsieur Spade is worth the price of entry alone.
Friar Angelo: I’ve been sent here to root out fanatics. It hasn’t been easy for me.

Sam Spade: Like finding a needle in a needle stack, eh?
If you haven't watched it already, I HIGHLY recommend pairing it with the equally stellar Ripley for a few weeks (or days, I don't know how hard you binge) of fantastic noir goodness.

Watched four episodes of this and it is pretty good as a docudrama. It has a definite POV (the Earps, especially Wyatt, are a bit rough around the edges, but on the right side of the law - at least at first - while Ike Clinton and the Cowboys are a western “mafia”), but it does a good job of linking the ongoing troubles in AZ to the wider political and economic situation in the U.S. I highly recommended mend it.

Just finished the first episode. We're also watching Deadwood so it provides a nice contrast/complement. I, too, was unaware of the geopolitical aspect.
