Ah, sorry...my mistake. I thought Combat Blimps of Pentos was a nickname for an out of shape military.
"They're marching on Kings Landing right now, my leige. They should be....no...no...wait...they found an Old Country Buffet. They're settling in. Sir...I think we can call off the evacuation at this point. If I remember correctly, OCB has something called a "bottomless shrimp" special."

At last it can be revealed: The reason GRRM hasn't finished The Winds of Winter is because he has been commissioned to finish The Kingkiller Chronicles. Rothfuss doesn't know how to kill a king, and GRRM knows little else.
pr0ner wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 2:03 pmHe's never going to actually finish this series.
I finally came to accept that around 2011, when the last book came out. Rather than wrapping up, he's on an increasing curve:
Book 2: 2 years
Book 3: 2 years
Book 4: 5 years
Book 5: 6 years
Book 6: 11+ years (GRRM age 74+)
Book 7: 15 years (GRRM age 88+)
Book 8: 20 years (GRRM age 108+)
At this point I wouldn't bet that Brandon Sanderson will be around to write the final book.
Book 8? I thought the "plan" was that the series would end in book 7.

Sweet summer child...
The plan was for the series to be 3 books. It's possible it'll 'end' in 7 (well, it's guaranteed it will at this point), but I can't imagine GRRM getting everything in just two more books.

Doable if his editor prevents him from using the word "nightsoil"
I don't know. We might just end up with more rashers of bacon and lamprey pies.
Fun fact: I recently learned of a medieval French king who is said to have died from eating too many lampreys.
Apparently they are delicious as hell. I feel sure GRRM knew this factoid and ran with it.

There is an english style pub in the city that has lamprey pie on the menu... or at least used to, I don't see it on the menu right now. Maybe it's seasonal? https://www.pleasanthousepub.com/
I'd like to go there sometime before the next book is finished.

Apparently lampreys and river eels are equally tasty.
When the pilgrims and other Europeans arrive in New England, the rivers were thick with eels. They were quickly eaten into rarity.
Eels rather than turkey were probably the centerpiece of the first Thanksgiving.

I’m not sure I’m sold on lamprey pie. Even if all new kings and queens demand it.
But I’ve always believed that 90 percent of all food was created on a dare.

You probably don’t have to hurry then.

Very random - did you know that all eels are river eels? We used to think there were different species but it turns out all eels go through a life cycle where they spend part of their time in rivers. I listed to a podcast on eel sex and it was really fascinating for shining a light on how little we know about the world.

I also recently learned this, as well as that they (as in all eels in an extremely large geographical area) seem to spawn in the same location. Olds will return to the spawning area, and the kids will magically know where to return to.

Yes! And that area is in salt water which is why it took so long to figure out. Scientists knew they had never seen river eels having sex and had no idea where they came from - turns out from salt water. And those look nothing like the eels in rivers. Mother Nature can be really weird.

What do you do for a living, dad?
I watch eels having sex.
If it's all the same to you pop, I'm going to tell my friends you're a fireman.

Note to self: Never mention lamprey pies again. It just leads to slippery salt water eel sex.

Knowing this group, the question is more who DOESN’T.

So Martin endowed Northwestern with $5 million to start a scholarship fund. I suppose the goal is to find someone clever enough to complete the story and tie up all of the loose ends in a satisfactory manner.

LOL.
Martin does say in the video he has another 400-500 pages of TWoW to go. JFC.

Well, at least he has a sense of humor about it. But yeah, he's never going to finish. A hundred pages a year average? Good night.

He's going to cock it up. Mark my words -- one way or another this will end badly.
“The main thing I’m actually writing, of course, is the same thing,” Martin recently said of Winds in an appearance on Bangcast. “I wish I could write as fast as [Last Kingdom writer] Bernard Cornwell but I’m 12 years late on this damn novel and I’m struggling with it,” Martin said.
“I have like 1,100 pages written but I still have hundreds more pages to go,” the writer continued. “It’s a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should’ve started writing smaller books when I began, this but it’s tough. That’s the main thing that dominates most of my working life.”
That 1,100 number is familiar to anyone who has now been following the story of Winds of Winter being written for a decent chunk of their life—it’s the same page count Martin gave roughly this time last year, when he discussed the novel on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Then, Martin estimated that he had around another 500 pages or more to write, having previously estimated that Winds would be the longest novel in the series so far, trumping the approximately 1,500 page manuscripts for Dance with Dragons and Storm of Swords.

Why doesn't he just take some chunk of that (700, 800, 1,000 pages, whatever make sense) publish that, and then fold the rest into a next book?

Book 5 in my paperback comes in at just over 1,040 pages. So if it was 1,500 as a manuscript then so far Martin only has about 650 publishable pages.

Just pull a 90s TSR: Reduce the page size slightly, increase the margins slightly, up the font size a little - bam! 400 more pages!

This has been the strategy for Mark Greaney after he replaced Tom Clancy. Giant margins and large text so you think you're buying the typical door stop Clancy novel.

Despite all appearances, we aren't actually all 12. Particularly those among us that read 1000+ page novels.
