It's surprising how many non-binary animals there are, especially among birds.

Its the 100th anniversary of the theremin. If you think you might have heard one think of the theme to Dr Who.

Moog’s limited-edition theremin marks 100 years of weird sounds
With the Claravox coming in at $1,499, you may want to adjust your budget before trying to preorder one of the limited units. But if you don’t manage to snag one, you can at least join me in listening to samples and staring longingly at the beautiful photos on Moog’s site.

I think other than Dr Who the first time I heard one was in the movie Frankie & Johnny starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer

These stores that are dying off...Sears, JCPenney, et all. Do you remember seeing a commercial for any of them in the last decade or more? I remember them all over tv in the 90s. Especially around the holiday times. But I dont recall one in many many many years. Of course my wife DVRd stuff and skipped commercials but even before that I dont recall them any more.

In our generation Sears and JCPenney ascended to new heights as big-mall anchor stores and have since suffered as malls succumbed to the reality of online retail.

I rarely see TV commercials for anything. Every now and then one is intriguing enough to make me drop out of warp and watch it. (My TV lets me jump ahead in 15-second increments so ads are a rapid series of stills.) But more on topic, I only ever buy anything offline at the packie, the grocer, and the hardware store. I have no idea what stores still exist at the mall a mile away from me. I last went there 2 years ago because they had a kiosk that would recycle my old phone, and I left without buying anything except lunch at Johnny Rockets, so bully for them I guess.

Malls just aren't the powerhouse they once were, and have been having to adapt. No anchor stores means less foot traffic, which means higher rent, etc. Our first big loss in our city was the Eaton's department store when it went bankrupt in the late 90's, which at one time was Canada's largest department store. The mall it was in never fully recovered from that, and over the years started to rent property as office space. Another one of our malls was just recently announced it would house our hospital's kid special treatment centre.

No Santa this year at least at Macys. 159 years of Santa ends.

Santa is skipping Macy's for the first time in 159 years
There will be no miracle on 34th Street this year. Santa Claus won't be visiting any Macy's stores in 2020, ending a 159-year holiday season tradition.
The department store's tradition started in 1861, but Santa meet-and-greets won't be happening this year because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Macy's (M) is creating an interactive virtual experience.
"To replicate the magical experience of visiting Macy's Santaland for children and their families, we will shift to a virtual engagement this year," Susan Tercero, Macy's vice president of Branded Entertainment, said in a press release. It will be available online from November 27 to December 24.
But thats not stopping some malls. After reading it though Im scratching my head wondering why bother like that.
Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) Property Partners and the second-largest mall operator in the country, said Santa will be in 134 of its more than 150 malls. But Santa will remain behind plexiglass.
The "touchless experience" with Santa will be like "a drive-up window type of scenario," said Rocell Viniard, the director of portfolio marketing with Brookfield Properties.
Santa will wear a mask in states with a mask mandate, and guests will be required to do the same. In states with no mask requirement, Santa can wear a mask if he wants to, she said.
But Macys is having the parade...or something. Im not sure what they're doing.
Macy's isn't getting rid of Santa completely this year. He'll still be a star of the department store's Thanksgiving Day Parade. But even the parade will look different.

In September, Macy's announced that it's shifting the event to a "television-only special presentation" this year, forgoing the traditional 2.5-mile New York City route and reducing the number of parade participants by 75%. And the 80 to 100 handlers that normally walk the balloons will be replaced by special vehicles.

The place to apply for winter energy assistance is running a month behind this year. I usually call on the 1st of Oct and get and appt for the first or second week in Oct. But this time Im having to wait until Nov to even apply. Which mean an extra month before Ill hear back. Probably Jan when Ill hear and Feb when I get any assistance. Usually its Dec I hear and Jan for the help.

Lucky this months bill was lower . $79.

Look it up, it’s insane that an entire country thinks it’s okay to do that once a year.

Edit: I take that back. Apparently it’s not accepted as okay by the entire country and many think it’s racist after all.

I am currently watching the Lorax movie that came out several years ago and Jesus cripes is it terrible. The Seuss book is a fable, a parable, not a Hollywood script with narrative arcs and musical breaks and heteronormative romance. And yet that's what they did. It's so, so bad.

Never watch this movie.

It's gotten slower and slower around here. I used to apply in the fall, and get the credit sometime around December. Last year I applied in October and got the credit in March or April - after heating season.

I'm hoping that this is the last year I'll qualify. Fingers crossed.

What a strangely laid out home and a disgusting pile of stuff. From the outside its a 'little' like my mom's old home but that one has no room in it and with all the stuff it has dead ends and stuff. Also no garage at all.
