One of the vendors I work with who has to deal with the system we lost said the other day "Just stay off the internet right now"
It's feeling like there's been a shift towards dark actors in the last few weeks and the "good guys" are struggling to catch up.
Heck, I even logged into a job site with my Tier 4 password and was warned by Chrome that it was exposed somewhere and should be changed. Awesome!

For someone with no cable and no over air reception at all would a $17 ROKU be worth a go? I was told I could watch free channels and news and such. So is it worth it if I wouldnt use it to pay for any services?

Which password management utility do you use (if any) and why? With the recent bugaboo around ransomware, website hacks, password leaks, etc... it seems like it might finally be time for me to get in the game and stop just using four or five passwords for everything, corresponding to the level of concern I have if they were hacked (like all of my forum accounts share one password, but my bank accounts each have their own).
Research seems to indicate 1Password and LastPass are in a dead heat for 1st place in 2020 between different review sites.

I've used LastPass for years, and have no complaints, but I also have no experience with their competitors.

I don't know what they cost, but you're definitely going to pay more for prefab one-serving anything.
I bought one as a test. Was $1.28. The cup is a little bigger than a ravioli microwave one. It comes with 3 little plastic pouches in it...sausage, cheese, and a potato and pepper and seasoning one. Once you put them all in it and cook with with the egg added its STILL not even half full. It does taste good. I got the Ultimate Scramble one. So its good but not worth the price. If they were 0.50 cents or if the amount filled the cup then yes. As is only if you have money to toss or like to be quick for a bite or two.
EDIT: Once empty the cup came in handy. I added 2 eggs, salt and pepper, and some butter then microwaved that and made me so fast eggs. Ive never microwaved an egg before now in my life. Not bad. And best of all no cast iron skillet to clean up or reseason. Im going to see if I can wash the cup and keep it to use again like this. Its pretty thin plastic so not sure. but will be handy if so.....unless I die from leeched chemicals.

I can use ROKU on my PC by going to their site?..And no charge to watch tv there?..Weird.
topic 2 - Got my energy assistance approval letter today. But its not as much as last year. Maybe not as much as last 2 years. im not sure what they base it on because ive not changed. So Im thinking either funds available and how many applied and qualified or maybe the cost of the energy from the company.

I'd strongly recommend going with an open source password manager. Open source code which is available for audit tends to be inherently more secure.
Personally, I've been using
KeePass for over a decade. It's one of the oldest and most famous and reliable open source password managers out there. However, because of that, its user interface
is somewhat dated and it's certainly not as n00b-friendly as others. So if you're not a power user but want a full-tank password manager with a modern UI and features, I'd recommend the open source
BitWarden over LastPass for the reasons explained in the comparative review below:

Signed up on ROKU. Theres a LOT there. My wife would have loved ROKU. To me its a messy mess but I see lots of stuff I used to love and watch....Space 1999, Xena. Ill look around and see what there is. I tried the LIVE ABC news but it just kept playing commercials and kept at it until I left.

I should have done this earlier...
The office chair I picked up for $40 months ago did have one problem... The cushion sucks. I bought one of those U-shaped cushions for it, but somehow it keeps sliding off. The supposedly high-friction surface is powerless against the chair's slippery seat material.
Then inspiration hit. A long time ago, I bought a packet of like... 100 hook-n-loop cable ties and I chained 4 of them together which is long enough to form a loop around the seatback, and stick to the surface of the cushion. So now, the cushion is tied in place and won't shift any more.

Just a mild warning, I rewatched Space: 1999 a couple years back, it's...bad. Like, really bad.
I loved the show when it was on but...ooof.

Ugh. Daehawk, that stuff is garbage.
You talk about how important it is to save your money for food, and then you buy what is essentially a, what, $12 bag of Skittles?
Invest in the Roku for entertainment and learn to eat healthy and cheap. You'll be so much happier.

I really think a "Weird Stuff Daehawk Eats" thread would rack up a lot of pages.
And since this is Random Randomness, whatever happened to the "Stuff JeffV Hates" thread?

Big increase in Covid around here (even if fairly tame compared to the US) so I'm looking at a 3 week winter break from teaching with no travel, limited social gatherings, and no desire to go randomly explore the city via public transit. But we have enough snow to make snowmen, friends and their children to watch in the park, and warm coffee after on a Sunday morning. I can be content.
At least until the coffee runs out.

I was talking more short term! Even now the snow has melted and the coffee has been consumed. It's still a good Sunday but some of the magical bit of the morning is gone.

Daehawk, on the roku, look for the "pluto" channel.
its like tv, with commercials and all that, except each channel is themed. personally, I watch the classic doctor who channel. for reals, its classic doctor who, 24x7
don't be put off by the first few channels in the list not being to your liking, just keep scrolling, there is plenty for us aging geeks. like MST3K and rifftrax and flix of fury then you can favorite the channels you like, and never have to scroll through the crap again.

I promised myself I'd try to stop sharing dumb things people post on Facebook since it leads to a pit of darkness and frustration, but this one I can't help:
"Inspirational" story about Jesus comforting a little girl whose father killed her mother in a murder-suicide ends with:
66% of you won't post this, But remember what the bible say's [sic] "Deny me in front of your friends and i shall Deny you in front of my father". So re-post this, remember God saw you read this
What the
fuck?? I mean, I'm a Christian and I have no issue in general with these cute folk tales people share... they're just not for me; they strike me as vapid. But that's the most horrible chain-letter-esque re-post guilt trip I've ever seen. Both in terms of the religious manipulation and grammar. So if I don't re-post this, my salvation is void? Why the hell is
Deny the word they're making a point of capitalizing, and not Bible, I, or Father? This is the very worst kind of "God as Santa Claus" kind of elf-on-the-shelf thinking. If my mother had posted this, I would have to find a way to retroactively emancipate myself.

The bible you see, is full of funny words that only get used in the bible. deny, is the verb meaning "to eat at Denny's" so when the bible says "Deny me in front of your friends and i shall Deny you in front of my father" what it means is, You take me to eat at Dennys with your friends, I'll pay you back by having my daddy take us both to eat at Dennys another time.
