I was trying to mentally reconstruct my list today as well. Let's see:
Lords of Waterdeep
Defenders of the Realm (x 2)
King of Tokyo (x2)
Alien Frontier
X-Wing
Tsuro
Tumblin' Dice
Crokinole
Forbidden Island
Risk Express
D-Day Dice (x2)
I feel like I'm forgetting something, but not sure what.

Would have happily thrown it on the table again. Hopefully I'll remember next Octocon. Which reminds me, is it to soon still?

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played a handful of games this weekend with my son...
King of Tokyo - This is still a big hit here, with my wife even asking to play it now and then. Only did some 3 player matches but it's always a blast.
X-Wing - My son and I love this, and we played our first really big game with all of the miniatures we have thus far. We have encountered a problem though... we're big fans so we went ahead and bought one of everything, that gives us 2 X-wings, 1 Y-wing, 3 TIE fighters and 1 TIE advanced. We initially thought we'd go for a 100 point battle but with what we have, that's almost a no-brainer ship selection for both sides. Rebels can get the top 3 pilots and a few upgrades, or downgrade one pilot and get R2s and such for everyone. The Empire can get their choice from among the top pilots, and what upgrades are available for them. Catch is, that makes just 4 TIEs on 3 Rebels, and that's not good odds for the Empire. Not only that, but as good as their pilots are, they're not as good as the Rebel top 3, so they all have to move first and fire last (besides Vader)... so that kills their advantages even more.
So we settled for a 75 point game but that didn't seem much better in terms of layout (was still 4 TIEs on 3 Rebels). I'm tempted to pickup another TIE fighter or two, but I'm not made of money... think I might wait and get two TIE interceptors.
Seasons - This is also a hit with my son, though we've yet to play with more than two. I have a hard time trying to describe it... it's kind of like playing Magic the Gathering, but with a relatively tiny deck, but where drafting is more important, and there's the random element of dice rolling limiting your actions each turn too. Probably not a very good description, but it is an odd little game... but one we enjoy a lot!

I played the tutorial setup of Galaxy Trucker with my 6 year old. I figured the ship-building rules would be a bit complex for him. I scoffed that he only had one engine and it was a double. I pointed out that he didn't have enough fire power. He beat me 12-10. Next time I am asking him for advice.

Nice. I'm going through a love affair with Small Box Games and their fantastic stable of games and I just found out yesterday that their flagship game Omen is up for a boardgamegeek.com best 2 player game of 2012 award.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Got in a game of the Star Trek DBG with Tommy and Stuart last night. Nothing overly remarkable about it other than Stuart finally lost a game. We did play with the variant where if your flagship is destroyed, you have to go back to your default flagship in addition to taking an ensign. That made for a way more interesting game (IMO).
OK, there was one funny point where Stuart had been having an awful time getting a replacement flagship. He could just never get the diplomacy and speed together with the ship on the explore phase. Finally, he had a decent amount of speed, and a decent amount of diplomacy, and he pulls a ship. Speed, check! Diplomacy, check! Wait...what's that on the Flip text? Your flagship takes 3 points of damage? How much damage do you have left? 3 points? Aw. Too bad. Stuart ship go boom!
He was not amused. I, however, was.

Ok, so the consensus of the ten people who have played the RISK dice game is that it is a fun little filler game (plays quick, easy rules, to "fill" gaming time between long games or ending the evening). Thanks to Hentzau for making me aware of it. Not having been released in the states, I made a set out of FoamBoard and Wooden Cubes.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Khet, Carcassonne, Carcassonne: The Castle, checkers, Sorry! Sliders, Connect 4...
My 1st grader with the broken collarbone can't do anything fun, so we play board games when he isn't watching Power Rangers. I was pretty impressed he was able to pick up the game play of the Carcassonne games and a decent mind for the strategy. I played checkers for the first time in probably 10 years. He doesn't see the moves well, he's better at chess. Sorry! Sliders I am bored with. It's way too easy. Connect 4 is the game where he can beat me fairly often, so he likes playing that and I don't mind. The games are very quick and it's easy to reset for a new game.
I'm really looking forward to Mice and Mystics now (it looks like it may be shipping to retailers now-ish).

A carrom board would be your only option in the $50 range, but I would not send you down that path. It's just not the same. That being said, your young one would still enjoy it, and there are a ton of other games you guys could play on that board.coopasonic wrote:Show me a way to step up to the real thing for $50 and I'm in. Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
It's a Kickstarter bonanza!
So a week ago Friday I received Fleet, a card game about fishing in the Arctic, lots of fun, and playable in well under an hour.
In the next few weeks, I should be receiving Chicken Caesar, a political game about chickens being elected to a roman-style Senate, and Tammany Hall, a game about politics in 19th century NYC.
Of course, after playing Seasons last weekend, I had to have it.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Guess it's a matter of perspective. I have a $90 copy of Eclipse that I've played exactly one time, and I have a premium $350 crokinole board that I've played hundreds of games on, and will though the course of my lifetime (and childrens lifetimes if they want it when I'm gone) probably play thousands more games on. I'm thinking crokinole is the better bargain. But, YMMV, especially if you find out that you don't like crokinole after dropping $150 on it.coopasonic wrote:I had a carrom board when I was a kid and remember having a lot of fun with it. Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Got in a first game of Dungeon Command last night with Tommy. Pretty fun. Seemed like my Drow were way more effective in being able to attack and counter his attacks than his Cormyr forces were. All in all, it was an interesting system, but weird playing a D&D game without rolling dice. As Tommy observed as we were cleaning up last night, it was basically playing a game of M:tG using miniatures and a board. I liked it enough that I'll probably pick up the other factions as they are released. Like the goblin one that is out right now.

Last week, my wife yelled across the apartment, "Hey, I'm ordering diapers from Amazon. Is there anything else we need?" I replied, jokingly, "Yeah, there's a new X-wing dogfighting game."
Much to my surprise, we are now the proud owners of an economy pack of Pampers and the X-Wing miniatures game.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Played two more rounds of Monsterpoclypse this past weekend - and my undefeated streak continues. From what I understand copies of the game are extremely hard to find and the general market for figures has completely disappeared. The word on the street is that new expansions and figures are tied up with a rumored movie release, but the immediate effect is that he game is languishing with a lack of formal support. It's still a ton of fun and we're mostly playing it casually as the unit and building strategy is still a bit too much to take in, but I consider it a worthwhile investment. We have enough figures between the two of us to keep it fresh for a while, which is probably for the best.
Lost my mind over the weekend and ordered Arkham Horror - it was in my Amazon Gold Box and I had store credit. Box weighs 5 lbs. Need to buy some type of tackle box for all the bits, but I was also excited to see there's an iPhone app to keep track of things. I don't know why but if it has a Cthulhu theme, eventually I just buy it. I should know better by now...

I'm in the final stretch of waiting for my CSI order. Since it includes a preorder of Mice & Mystics, it will ship as soon as that comes in. M&M shipped out to publisher preorders last week, and is probably shipping out to distributors this week, which means I'm looking at late next week for my box to arrive. I don't think my fiancee is prepared for how big the shipping box for four board games winds up being.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I just watched the entire "Watch it Played" series up to current for M&M this morning. I cna't wait for this game and I'm not sure my son will enjoy. It really does look very much like Zombicide with a kid-friendly theme. I was gonig to say a lighter game than zombicide, but it really isn't, some of the mechanics are different, but not really lighter at all. Less enemies on the board at once, so maybe less overwhelming that way.Chaz wrote:I'm in the final stretch of waiting for my CSI order. At the risk of posting 3 times in a row. Is the consensus on Summoner Wars positive among the geeks of OO? I looked at it once before and didn't get it, but I just watched a play video and now I am thinking it might be a pretty good game to have, if a bit tough for my son. In a year or two I think he would easily be able to handle it.
Also, how do you play with 3 or 4 players?

hepcat is a big fan of Summoner Wars. I like it but haven't played enough for any grasp on its strategy. It does seem to have some depth while still playing fast.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Summoner Wars is fantastic. One of the best game designs to come out in years, it's like a combination of a CCG/LCG and chess. I've played dozens of games with my Master Set and over 100 games online via the iPad app, and I'm still learning strategy and tactics in games. Each faction is unique and given how many games it takes to really understand how to play each deck effectively, you're talking years of replay value.coopasonic wrote:At the risk of posting 3 times in a row.
I don't know how old your son is, but my 7-year-old was able to grasp it within a few games and is now fairly competitive.
As for 3/4 players, I've only ever played it 2-player so can't comment there. I believe the 4-player game is played with two 2-person teams, which adds a strategic planning layer on top of the tactical game. Not sure how 3 player would work.

All you guys posting about M&M...makes me think you're talking about Merchants and Marauders.

Actually, that's another recent acquisition that's waiting to get played.

We need to break that out again. I like that game. Maybe this Sunday I can get some folks to play that one.

Were I closer to Detroit, I would gladly allow you to blow giant holes in my ship. Because that seems to be the way the game goes for me most times.Remus West wrote:We need to break that out again. I like that game. Maybe this Sunday I can get some folks to play that one.

My son is 6 and I've mostly been avoiding games that require more than the smallest bit of reading, but I think he can probably handle it, at least if he sticks with the same faction for a few games so he knows the cards. I'll put it on the list and by the time I get it he'll probably be 7 and ready for it.Boudreaux wrote:Summoner Wars is fantastic. Team play makes sense for 4 players. That hadn't occurred to me.

M&M shipped out to publisher preorders last week, and is probably shipping out to distributors this week, which means I'm looking at late next week for my box to arrive. I don't think my fiancee is prepared for how big the shipping box for four board games winds up being.
