Yahoo still exists?

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

“Eagle 10 powering up for a scientific survey,” writes Steve. He built Replica Unlimited’s 1/48 scale “Space: 1999” Eagle transporter and Small Art Works’ “spine booster” with heavy modifications, including some kitbashing and turned-aluminum engine nozzles. “The gantry section also is custom built of kitbashed leftovers from old Airfix kits,” he says. Markings come from JBOT decals. Steve spent more than 1,500 hours on the project.

I have some photos on my computer from 2013 of empty cicada skins all over the front of my house, so the map checks out.

So I'm watching the news with my wife and they had a story about some guy killed 3 family members.
My wife says "I wonder why he did that?"
Without thinking i said "They probably talked too much."
My wife who is pretty much deaf says "What?" and I said "Nevermind."
Dodged a close one there.

Alkaline “Real Water” linked to liver failure in kids—and reports are rising

You'd think there'd be testing and regulation of food products. :ninja:
At least five infants and children in Nevada have suffered acute non-viral hepatitis, resulting in liver failure, after drinking “alkalized” water by the brand “Real Water,” local and federal regulators reported this week. At least six others fell ill with less severe conditions after drinking the water—and additional reports continue to surface.

The initial five infants and children with liver failure fell ill in November 2020 and required hospitalization, but they have since recovered. They lived in four different households in southern Nevada. The other six ill people—three adults and three children—came from at least two of those same households and reported vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

That's pretty bizarre - did they pump their water with enough oxidizers (to up the pH) to make it so corrosive that it's leeching every heavy metal it's coming in contact with? Like, WTF?

The bottles advertise a 9.0 pH. That's nuts. I'd never want to drink that. Maybe use it in an industrial process where water is used to absorb stray chemicals, but not consume it.

From the FDA:
However, the agency recommends that municipal drinking water suppliers keep their water supply at a pH of 6.5 to 8.5

From what I've heard the biggest problem is that your body is designed to regulate it's own pH. If you start gulping down large amounts of alkaline water, it doesn't actually alter your pH, because your body goes into overdrive to maintain the proper acidity. It's your body going into overdrive for an extended period that can cause the organ damage (although it would be expected to be the kidneys, not liver, and most people wouldn't have an issue anyway.)

The thing is that the alkaline water craze has been going on several years now, and a pH of 8 or 9 is about normal for it. If it was going to cause all these problems, it would have been noticed before now. It's more likely that it's something with this specific brand that's the issue rather than the pH itself.

And like all things like this, there are no real studies to fall back on.
