I imagine there are rare few times where you can simply establish a "free fire" kill zone and walk away from it. That's one of those times, maybe. Trench warfare, maybe also, where you basically sit and wait to shoot at anything that moves across the field.
Even if you're surrounded and under fire, you can't (shouldn't?) indiscriminately shoot at anything that moves. It could be someone coming to save you, or a non-combatant trying to escape a war zone.

It seems like the value in these things is their quick auto-targeting, not their complete independence. It would be unconscionable to have them able to fire without a human giving the green light.
The naval Phalanx missile defense works the same way. It's basically an automated gatling cannon that shoots down incoming anti-ship missiles, but it still must be given the order to go active.

For use on the DMZ, the sentry bot doesn't need to distinguish friend from foe. When someone crosses the line, they are automatically an enemy. The robot can verbally command an enemy to surrender. It can understand the soldier's arms held high to indicate surrender, and then not fire. Normally the ultimate decision about shooting would be made by a human, not the robot. But the robot does have an automatic mode, in which it can make the decision.
I can't find the article right now, but I remember reading that the engineers originally designed it to be fully autonomous, and it was actually the military that insisted adding a human to the decision loop.
