That truck repair place was small and a bit of a junkyard. It had practically no outside lights and was off a side road with no streetlights. Yup, it was a bit off-putting at first. But even though at times it is a cliché, there was a lot of southern hospitality displayed throughout.
First of all, we're on page 999... a random post might break the millennium mark soon!
Spent the day packing for the trip. Thank goodness for the minivan, we are both clothes horses and it takes a lot of luggage to keep us in style . Also we prepare for all sorts of activities and weather, although since we aren't planning on going off-roading I'm leaving the sand channels and shovel at home.

I recently learned about a thing called South Shore bar pizza...or, for those of us on the South Shore, bar pizza. Believed to have originated in Brockton in the 1940s, it spread as far north as Quincy following the trolley routes in between. The trolleys are long gone, but the bars making bar pizza mostly line the state highways that replaced them.
Bar pizza is a simple and cheap (about $8 nowadays) working-class meal served mainly in dive bars. Bar pizza is a 10" personal pan pizza -- one person, one pizza. The pans themselves are more prized the older and more seasoned they get. Toppings are spread right to the edge of the pan. The pizzas are simple -- tomato sauce and cheddar cheese on a thin crust that must not bend. Pepperoni is the most popular option, and onions & peppers is also common. You can depart from that a little, but your pizza stops being bar pizza if you add too many varieties or fancy toppings. Simple, quick, and cheap.
Having just discovered this hyper-regional thing, I'm setting out to sample bar pizzas. So far I've had one at a bar that's not known for its bar pizza. It was meh, but it set a baseline. Now I want to try some locally famous bar pizzas. One sports-and-shitty-beer dive bar that I'd never visit otherwise is barely a mile from home; that's going to be my first stop if I can get takeout. No way I'm going to sit there and drink Bud from a bottle just so I can try their pizza.

First of all, moving sucks. But being moved in (albeit with boxes all over the house) is pretty damn good.
Second, I was pretty much offline for 1.5 weeks during the whole packing-moving-unpacking process. What did I miss?

Nothing much - a taint exploding, a requiem for a rectum, Facebook was offline for 6 hours and vaccination rates skyrocketed, Jeff still has no use for electric cars...the usual. Oh, the Bears won, so I guess that qualifies as news.

I would definitely try it, just out of curiosity. Now if you told me it was american cheese-like-product, that would be a hard pass.
I think it also depends on the cheddar, that's a pretty broad spectrum of cheese, from stuff my wife likes all the way to stuff I like.
Cheddar's not bad on a pizza. Won't ever be my first choice, but within the tradition I'm fine with it. Here's a good blog post defining South Shore bar pizza in 21 points. It's an amusing read.

But in almost all cases cheddar cheese is bar pizza cheese. No cheddar? Not bar pizza.

Back from 960 miles of college visits with my son. We started in Philly and visited schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine.
I expected the driving to be a pain, but it was (apart from the 20 hours of sitting) pretty easy. Somehow we timed it so the traffic was always heavy the other way. MA and ME were pleasant driving. (We didn't get onto Boston roads, obviously.)

Cheddar's fine. It actually sounds good.
I think a lot of people would object less to things like that if you called it 'Bar Cheesey Pie" or something - but put the word 'pizza' on it and people get defensive (same with hamburgers, hot dogs, beer, and a few other things.)

This. Put it in front of me and it will get eaten at least once. Pizza has to go into fish or chickpea type territory before I don't try it. Saying "no" to pizza is pretty rare for me.

Saying 'no' to any food is pretty rare for me. I'll eat pretty much anything at least once. I've seen too many people who passed up great things because they decided they didn't like something before actually trying it. "It doesn't sound good" and "It doesn't look good" are of tertiary importance when we eat food with our mouths - not our eyes or ears.

I'm happy with my current choices with no desire to expand the options even if it means I go hungry in certain situations. Being an adult has it's privileges.

In Medford, MA we were starving and found a Korean BBQ place still open. The only option was all-you-can-eat, cook-it-yourself on the grill set into the middle of the table.
The food came without instructions and the waiter knew little English, so we probably overcooked everything just to make sure it was safe. We had everything from tender brisket to pork ribs to great slabs of chicken to cow intestines, plus every variety of noodle, broth, and Kimchi you can imagine on the side.
Delicious, filling, and too expensive for what we were able to consume. Would have been better if we'd skipped lunch beforehand.

It really is a giant mystery, yes. I also cannot imagine owning three boats, but apparently they're all docked at three different lakes. I feel like I am missing out on a big part of life by not realizing I need to have 3 boats.

I have been studying German lately using an app (Duolingo) for practice. In order to do so more easily, I turned on the German dictionary for my Android keyboard.
Yesterday I got detoured picking up my son. I sent him a text when I arrived at the lot: I'm Herr.
So now I have my phone's autocorrect 'fixing' texts with random German words as well as English.

When I was in the service it always amazed me how many guys wanted to be stationed by their home and how many wanted to live there when they got out.
I joined the service to get away from home and to live somewhere far away.

...or as a happy hermit, you can choose to embrace it and enjoy it. A lot of people would kill to have the kind of free time you have. And yes, I know that there is such a thing as too much free time, but you can choose to find ways to fill it. Start working out. Start carving. Start learning a language. Take a free online class in something you want to understand. Reorganize the inside of your house so that you're less tempted to keep living in a past that will never be there again. Pick up a genre of fiction or video games that you know nothing about and immerse yourself.
But if you wait for the world to change around you, you're going to be disappointed. As I've said before in these discussions, you have the power here. You can choose to always feel the way you do now, or you can choose to make it change. But whichever happens, always remember that it was by your choice.

I get out of the house once a week to get groceries and whenever I (or my wife) have doctor's appointments. That's my choice and I love it. I've even had groceries delivered.

Around a year into WFH (before I was called back "as needed"), isolation was starting to get to me and I was going a bit stir crazy. Aside from the once every other month grocery shop, my parents stopped by every three or four months and we'd sit outside together for 20 minutes or more. That was it for human contact. Of course, I still had work occupying so much time (and work people via one means or another) and stress that I was still "occupied" for the whole time. I'm seriously looking forward to the day I have that void. I do fear how long of a break of a break I will take before finally starting to do work around the house that has been ignored or under performed for years and that I will take too long to kickstart actually taking care of myself doing things like exercise and taking the time to eat better. I also have no idea how I'll fill in the people portion. I get overload from people all too quickly even if I don't want to be alone all of the time. That sort of finicky behavior is not how you keep on the invited list of other people.

Zero money would make that tough even if I desired to be in town. EBT refills Monday is why Im going out. After that I have $20 which Im hoping to have for some game that may go on sale Ive wanted years. Sales usually happen at the end of the month and my bank account usually read 73 cents or so after the 2nd week of the month. I do rearrange some now and store some stuff away. But going out among Covid people is not for me anyways. I enjoy getting out after a point. Its nice to have gas and drive around. But safer at home and cheaper.
On the plus side I barely eat so have lost 25 lbs . Not a lot to go.
