Cut short so soon. The man had so many more calls to miss!
You know an ump has a reputation when his retirement is followed by my CBS sports app pushing a notification for an article going through his eight biggest miscalls. How they got it down to eight is beyond me, but they point out that the data shows he's merely below average and not the worst ump. Part of his rep is that he had a quick trigger on ejections and inserting himself into the action when umps should be trying to stay out of the spotlight.
He's the only ump that my 11 year old son knows by name. When I told him that Hernandez was retiring he was like "FINALLY".
I will say that I will miss laughing about his terrible calls.
I'm gonna jinx the Padres right here. They sweep 2 from the Dodgers (clinched the season series), have won 9/10 and have moved into the #2 wildcard spot. And all this without Tatis.

I'm pulling for the Padres as my National League team this year because of Xander Bogaerts.
The Kansas man who pleaded guilty to stealing a Jackie Robinson statue from a Wichita youth baseball league earlier this year was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison for multiple cases, police said.
Ricky Alderete, 45, had pleaded guilty in May to theft, related to the January disappearance of the statue, and other charges. He had faced more than 19 years.
The prosecutor's office had said Alderete would be forced to pay $41,500 to League 42, the youth baseball organization named after the Brooklyn Dodgers legend.
There have been no more arrests connected to the case, but surveillance video showed at least two other people present when the statue was cut from its stand, leaving the bronze replicas of Robinson's cleats behind. Parts of the statue were later found, charred from a fire, in another park seven miles away. Police have maintained they don't believe the crime to be racially motivated but instead "by the financial gain of scrapping common metal."
...
A new statue will be unveiled Monday at Wichita's McAdams Park, where League 42 plays its games. Art Castings of Colorado, an art foundry 50 miles outside of Denver, created the replacement statue. The artist, John Parsons, died in 2022, but the foundry is using his original mold. MLB paid for the statue's replacement.

He was charged with several other crimes as well including kidnapping IIRC. In trying to avoid arrest he broke into a house and threatened the people inside.

Snell pitches a no hitter. He's had a pretty impressive last few starts, too bad it's a little too late.
Some team out there (probably the Yankees) wish they had agreed to whatever the Giants wanted for Snell. But he would have only been a rental as there is little doubt that Snell is pitching for that huge multi year contract that he didn’t get this year.

TBD. The Giants are poised for a late run, especially against the easiest remaining schedule in MLB, but they really dug themselves a hole and have yet to spend any real time above. 500, tho it looks like they may finally blow through that. May.

It's the Dodgers who REALLY needed him with all their injuries, and if he had been with anyone but the Giants, probably would have got him, but no way were the Giants going to trade him to the dodgers for anyone short of Ohtani or Betts

The Giants aren’t stupid enough to send him to the Dodgers.

Eh, for Ohtani or Betts on multi year deals (even injured) ? Hell yeah!

The Giants wouldn’t be stupid enough to send the Dodgers a pitcher that could win them the WS. I do wonder why the Giants didn’t try to get Rooker from the A’s. Maybe they did but didn’t have anything the A’s wanted. Strange that the A’s didn’t do their normal thing of shopping around their assets.

They're currently up 2-1 in the 5th.
Playing up to the competition I guess. At a sparkling 47-67, the As have 20 more wins than the Sox.

White Sox won, so their losing streak ends at 21. They're still a mind boggling 28-88, their highest batting average is .236, and they don't have any active players with an OPS over .700.

I read recently that the White Sox's top 3 players collectively have a WAR around 11, and that the White Sox as a team have a WAR of around 8.

A WAR 0 team would be around 50 wins, no? I have a hard time believing this team is +8.
(Not disputing your information but rather the WAR calc)

You're right, I was remembering a number that was too high. From this column (which was written before the trade deadline):
By Baseball-Reference’s accounting, that trio has produced 10.0 WAR so far, while the entire team—including Crochet, Robert, and Fedde—has collectively accumulated 4.2. A little arithmetic will tell you what that means for the rest of the roster.
Will be wearing a The Replacements tshirt to the next game I attend.

Yea, I was watching the WS play the A’s the last two days when an announcer used those stats.

White Sox have fired manager Pedro Grifol. If the White Sox choose me as their next manager, I intend to instruct the players to hit better.
If you choose me as the assistant manager, I can tell the pitchers to pitch better.

I don't want to give away all my secrets beforehand, but just to drop a couple nuggets:
(1) they should pitch to make it harder for the other team's hitters, as we want *their* hitters to hit worse;
(2) we should only employ pitchers, and no belly itchers.

The Padres are absolutely on fire. They are now 14 games over .500, have won 7 straight and 9 of their last 10 and have pulled within 2 games of the Dodgers. And three of their last four wins have been in extra innings with a couple comebacks in the ninth. This is sweet and almost unheard of for the Padres.
