I've diddled with Angband, Nethack, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and Alphaman. But Moria is the only one I played long enough to beat*, probably because of its simplicity.

*I didn't legitimately beat it, I save-scummed.

It's a hard game. I benefitted from having watched a friend play it, then I applied the same tactics when I played it later.

The only thing I can find under Moria is a Lord of the Rings game. Is that what you're talking about?

It's only loosely inspired by LOTR. Don't expect to see any ASCII art of Liv Tyler if you decide to play it.

Yeah I found that. It's a little too crude even for me.

Save scumming wasn't something I would have known how to do back then

Absolutely! I had dabbled in RPGs a bit (the original Wizardry) but Ultima 3 was a huge deal to me when I tried it. Ultima IV is one of the all time greats! I have played all of them. Ultima VIII and IX were horrid by comparison, and yet I still played and won them (begrudgingly).

I'm pretty sure that Ultima IV is the only one I really put an effort into. I loved it also.

I think it was IV on my Atari that you had to do an entire dungeon in single run and I still remember to this day COR AMO VER and doing the dungeon over hours at a time and getting booted out because I didn't put them in the right order.

Yes it was VERAMOCOR. And on the C64 I you couldn't save in dungeons either!
