For those of you haven't played, it's a Resource Management game, each turn you try to avoid getting screwed and grab what you can. Sometimes it is a choice between what you need and what you can get, future planning, and a dash of Screw Your Neighbor.

You do very little messing with your neighbor actually. (though not none) Mostly the game is about anticipating neighbor's plans so you can capitalize on them, with your goal really becoming forcing their plans to enhance your trading empire, where their best interests ultimately help your best interests somewhere between almost as much as them to way more than them.

I'm torn. I'm tempted to buy the overpriced Puerto Rico limited anniversary edition. Staying my hand is the fact that I do not actually participate in an active gaming circle these days. On the other hand, if I wait till I'm again among boardgamers, it'll no longer be available. On the other hand, much fun can be had with the junky, inferior thin cardboard version.

If we do a play-by-forum, I could run it using the board and post photos of the game state. That's a plus, right? Then again, there's always Vassal.

Of course, I could just pick up the standard edition. I sort of like its artwork better, except for the building cards.

I'd play a forum version. Only tried it once so I'm no expert, but loved the game.

Pick it up. When you do get with another gaming group, you are going to regret not doing it if you pass it up now.

And I would play it online. It has been a few years, but I'm sure I would pick up the strategy again fairly easily.

Does the Limited Edition have the expansions?

And if you simply used a Sharpie and Index cards you could make a set for like $2.

I will note that I have a Cosmic Encounter set made entirely in this fashion.

Of course, I do have all the real stuff too...

That's actually a powerful argument for buying the LE.

I have officially routed birthday money to Puerto Rico. After it arrives (say, in mid or late summer), I'll set up a forum game and take signups.
