I would encourage to read the full article on Kotaku, which presents a fairly nuanced view (about as nuanced as you can get in a blog post) of this period in the evolution of the West.LordMortis wrote:I wouldn't buy the review and don't care for the reviewer based on the clip. It's that sort of talk that I was brought up on and it took until about half way through college to see history as more flowing and interconnected than as segmented separate collectible pieces. I think I'd have understood history better and appreciated it a lot more if we had allowed the Civil war and old west and WWI for instance to blend together and to give me a sense of short of a time fifty years is.

Preordered it from Amazon as the deal they have is too good to pass up. 20 dollar gift card + 5 dollars in MP3's + same day delivery for only about a buck more then I would have paid in the store if I paid sales tax.

Yeah, I've definitely been benefiting from Amazon's price wars with Gamestop and WalMart. I've been enjoying the HELL out of Just Cause 2, and I think I can say with confidence I like games more like Just Cause (Crackdown, Prototype, Dead Rising) over games like GTA. I'm really hoping Red Dead doesn't let me down. I'm trying not to get my hopes up but it's so damn difficult after seeing all the previews.

It looks like the most free roaming game that they have ever made from what I've seen. Early reviews have been stellar so I'm totally frothing at the mouth to get this next week. I need to come up with a cool name for my gang..

The MP3s are part of a larger mp3 promotion. The RDR preorder is a qualifying purchase so you get it, it's not specific to the pre-order. There was some fine print about it on the final order screen, I think the code gets emailed to you if it's like past promotions.hentzau wrote:Odd. It has an expiration, so use it. I've saved past ones and lost them.

I actually rode the Amazon gift card wave when Dragon Age launched. Got $10 off for buying Dragon Age, which I used to buy Mass Effect 2 at a discount, which in turn gave me another $10 which I used to buy Bioshock 2, which in turn gave me another $10 which I used to buy some other game I can't remember.Which comes with a $10 gift card for a pre-order. So you should just get them both and use the $30 gift card to buy Alpha Protocol.
I could just see the Amazon execs cackling with glee as they set the hook in my mouth and reeled me in.

Re: Red Dead Redemption
They are extremely devious. I used to wait to buy new Xbox360 games because most of the time there were price drops after the first month. Even when Amazon started offering $5 off for pre-order I still didn't bite. But these $10-20 credits for future gaming purchases are working out for them. Nothing is better than seeing WalMart or Gamespot advertise a sale or promotion. Most of the time Amazon matches within a few hours.

The MP3 deal didn't start until May 7th. I cancelled my pre-order, lost my $3 pre-order discount, but re-submitted and immediately got an e-mail about the MP3 credit.

I redeemed mine, there's not a code but you should still get the email. The easiest way to check is to go to the Amazon MP3 store and pick something. Anything.hentzau wrote: Checked through all of my e-mails, didn't get one that game me free mp3's.
Right below the "Buy Now With 1-Click" or "Buy Now" button there should be a link that says, "Redeem a gift card or promotion code & view balance." Click on that and it will give you your gift card and promotion code balance. If you got the $5, it will show up there.
If not, you might have pre-ordered before the MP3 promotion.

IGN has a bunch of good articles on the game. I can't recall being so excited about a release in a long time. So far the reviews rolling in have been stellar but I fear I might be getting to excited.

If you ordered from Amazon, then no, you don't need to worry. For release day delivery games, I never get the shipped status email until 7pm the day before at the earliest, and sometimes not until 10 or 11pm. It never fails to show up on release day though.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Hmm. This was not on my radar until THIS MORNING. Tomorrow is release day, huh? Tomorrow is also my wife's birthday. I have some gifts for her, but maybe she'd want this as well? In other words, she wouldn't and I could keep it.
2 things would need to happen though: 1) eliminate kids for maximum time to play, and 2) find a job to fund for said game.
I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption in my NY Times? It's more likely than you think.
Indeed. In an interview last month, Dan Houser, one of Rockstar’s founders and the company’s creative leader, described the challenge and opportunity quite aptly. “Westerns are about place,” he said. “They’re not called outlaw films. They’re not even called cowboys-and-Indians films. They’re called westerns. They’re about geography.”
“We’re talking about a format that is inherently geographical,” Mr. Houser added, “and you’re talking about a medium, video games, the one thing they do unquestionably better than other mediums is represent geography.”
In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar rides again.

This one is certainly testing my goozex resolve. I keep telling myself I'll get to play the game for free if I wait. It's hard. Mass Effect is the only other game that broke my resolve. FFXIII came very close, but I held out. This is the next test. Based on the fact I have no tie to play and I'm supposed to be training for a race, I think I can hold out.Octavious230 wrote: I can't f'n wait for this game!!

If you're serious about getting it from Goozex, I'd be up tonight to put it in your request list when you're able. I don't know what time it happens locally for you, but I think EST it's 1:00am. If you're lucky, you'll see it within 4 weeks.coopasonic wrote: Based on the fact I have no tie to play and I'm supposed to be training for a race, I think I can hold out.
But if you don't and you're just willing to wait in line...it could be a long, long time. If it was just a SP game the line would move fast, but with that added MP element it's unlikely the turnover will be fast.

Take a moment and give thought to the number of times you've seen the name coopasonic in any multiplayer thread, much less multiplayer game. You may see "coop" mentioned fairly often, but they mean "co-op", not me. I generally don't end up playing the multiplayer all that much but this looks like too much fun to pass up. Couple of guys from work are getting the game tomorrow and it should be a blast. I just hope it's not like GTA4 where everyone stopped playing online after a week.

I keep hoping. After all, I know you like racing games. I see Rock Band and fighting games as well. There's nothing better than having a full party (posse) running and gunning around a map, and it truly makes the cost of games much more palatable when you know there's a good month of MP goodness to be had.coopasonic wrote:Take a moment and give thought to the number of times you've seen the name coopasonic in any multiplayer thread, much less multiplayer game. I still have a nagging voice in my head wishing for a keyboard and mouse control option for this. I just finished Call of Juarez 2 and wow it was a blast. But I'm not very good with shooters on my 360.Well except the Gears games. For some reason I'm beyond great at them but not that great at ones like Halo Reach beta.

I've never had a problem - either with Prime auto upgrading me to release-day status or Amazon just doing it. Years ago it was a gamble, but they've really improved as part of their competition with B&M stores.
Assuming the UPS dude arrives at his usual time, I should have some impressions up before 11 am tomorrow morning. If not, it'll be around this time tomorrow. I finished Just Cause earlier this afternoon (well, 30% complete, story finished) so I'm ready to dive into Red Dead as soon as possible.

I'm just going to assume that delivery will be "attempted" and I won't get it for a few days (first "attempt" they never leave a card, second I attempt I get the card, 3rd they follow my instructions and leave at the desk ). Hoping to get some time in on Friday. Any time before that is gravy.

I cancelled D&D night tonight so I could play tomorrow night. I'm really really looking forward to this. One of my gaming buddies is coming over to watch. Going to need to get my HDMI connection run from my Xbox to my surround sound system tonight, for the full effect.
This is the first new game I've bought in forever for the 360. I bet I'm going to suck at it, but I bet I'm going to have a great time with it!
