If I understand

LM 1 up + 1 down = 0 empty
Q 1 down = 1 empty up top
EG 1 down = 1 empty up top
NC 1 up top = 2 empty

4 empty going to CR

CR has 1 available up top so there are either 4 or 5 empty depending on your decision. Either the result will be the same.

Here's a newbie question for Grund, or any of you Puerto Rico vets, before I choose my card.

Do I have any goods to sell?

Being as this is the first turn and I just placed a colonist in my plantation and have no colonists in my mill, do I even have any goods yet?

In other words, would Trader be a viable play for me now to sell sugar, or do I have to produce sugar in my sugar mill first to be able to sell?

You have no goods trade until there has been a craftsman. To produce a good you need to either have a manned corn or a manned plantation and a manned corresponding production facility.

In your case you wanted man your corn and possibly produce.

Right now a trader gets you nothing. You have no goods to trade.
Craftsman gets you nothing. Your corn is not manned and your manned sugar can't produce with production facility being manned.
There are no goods to ship with the captain.

So you pretty much are left just prospecting for a dubloon.

That's the end of this round.

I suppose Grund has some game functions to monitor between rounds before we move to Newcastle's Governor round?

corn sells for 0 unless you are the person who chose Trader (+1), have a small market (+1), or a large market (+2).

at the very least we need to know what plantations are available (and strategically we may have have wanted to know immediately after the settler to plan ahead).

Sort of. Acting as Trader would get you a 1 dubloon bonus. so 0 for corn +1 is one dubloon. However, you could get that same one dubloon from the prospector without spending a corn and allowing other people to trade.

Craftsmanning on corn would get you two corn (and me one indigo)

Personally, I would let change over to corn, which is where your should have placed but I don't know how people feel about things. This is not to say craftsmanning should be your logical play, only that it is better to have the potential for something rather than the potential for nothing.

Very true, though I don't think that should stop the game unless someone says "I need to wait for Grund to show the plantations before I make a decision" which is a reasonable request.

Indeed, as NC may have a choice to make in the event there is a single Tobacco in the plantations.

Yes. Taking a plantation during Settler is optional. Buying a building during Builder is optional. During Mayor, each player who can do so must take the available colonist, but placing it somewhere to activate a building or plantation is optional, and rearranging one's colonists is optional. During Craftsman, production of goods is optional, but if you choose to proceed you must produce as much as you can. During Trader, selling is optional. During Captain, shipping is mandatory.

They are most certainly religious dissenters and pilgrims, chiefly caucasian, who are willing to work in the new world for limited hours at a living wage in order to achieve work/life balance. Here's a picture of them:

All buildings are permanent and cannot be negated. So if you buy a small plant (cap 1) and a large plant (cap 3), you now have two plants and a capacity of 4. :)

BTW: there are three ways to end the game:
Run out of colonists during Mayor.
Run out of Victory Point counters during Captain.
Someone buys a 12th building during Builder.

Plantations (island spaces) are at the top. City spaces are at the bottom.
(They swapped 'em for the Anniversary Edition.)

EG: 1 empty (small indigo plant) [Top == 1 occupied quarry, 1 unoccupied indigo plantation]
N: 3 empty (tobacco storage) [Top == 1 occupied tobacco plantation, 1 unoccupied indigo plantation]
C: 1 empty (small sugar mill) [Top == 1 occupied sugar plantation, 1 unoccupied indigo plantation]
LM: 0 empty [Bottom == 1 occupied small indigo mill; Top == 1 occupied indigo plantation, 1 unoccupied corn plantation]
Q: 1 empty (small sugar mill) [Top == 1 occupied sugar plantation, 1 unoccupied corn plantation]

6 empty > 5 default. :. 6 Colonists incoming.

LordMortis gave you good info about how to produce (during Craftsman) in order to sell (during Trader) or ship (during Captain).

The reason for the minus one penalty on doubloons for seats 4 and 5 is that they start with corn. Corn goods require no building, so they're easier to produce (and thus to ship for Victory Points (VPs). In the long run (assessing data from over a million games) the corn advantage and the starting doubloon penalty cancel one another out.

You're right that a corn trades for 0 at the trade house. Here are the reasons you might want to trade it anyhow:

(a) If you have a small market, trade is +1 doubloon. So corn would be worth 1.
(b) If you have a large market, trade is +2 doubloons.
(c) If you have both a large and a small market, trade is +3 doubloons.
(d) If you sell corn, that prevents anyone who lacks an office from selling corn.
(e) Often the trade house sits there with 3 goods because nobody's willing to turn it over. Folks in that case are trying to prevent further (or different) trade. With a corn (which is usually the missing item), you can reset (i.e., empty/flush) the trade house.
(f) If you are the Trader, your perq is +1 on trade.
