NWN - Original campaign. Like others above me, I tried to really like this, I gave it a huge chance, but it was so boring it became a chore. The first expansion fixed this to a point.
Morrowind - This is one helluva boring game. After all these years I'm still trying to finish it! This is because I play for 10 - 15 minutes at a time, get bored outta my mind, and quit for a month or so. Thing is, I really want to enjoy this one. I love the graphics and potential it has, but in the end it still bores me. And yes, I have the expansions and tried nearly 2 dozen mods and it hasn't helped (althought admittedly I haven't seen too much of the expansions becuase I don't play long enough to get that far into them).
The Longest Journey - Actually, I find adventure games in general boring, but this one was exceptionally boring to me.

Do you mean the original OS/2 Gal Civ or the 10 years later Gal Civ? I played the original to no end. It and MOO are glued together in my brain as the best 4X games ever along with SMAC, but not SMAC+expansion. weird, eh?
The later one. I have no idea why I didn't like it, since I love MoO, SMAC, MoM, Civ, etc. I tried the demo several times and just found it incredibly dull.

I have to agree with you there. It took me about 4 years and two computers to finish the game. It wasn't an all time winner as far as the big bore, but the early chapters are real slow. However what kept me playing was the interesting characters and the interesting graphics.
As far as real old school, How About Choplifter? I could never play more than one mission.

Here's another vote for Morrowind.
Also, surprised no one has mentioned The Sims. I don't think I've ever played a game like that where I hit the wall so hard and never even look at it again.
And throw every adventure game in this category too, heh.

I'm not sure that I've ever thought of The Sims as a game - it always struck me as a toy. The Sims 2 actually has some game elements to it though.

You're smarter than I. I thought the demo was dull, yet the forum effect still got a purchase out of me. And then I thought the full version was dull.
Oh, and as far as your other 4X games go:
Great, Great, Great, and Great.
Fortunately I was able to find GalCiv a happy home with JetFred, I believe.

Morrowind. I try, and I try some more. I manage to have some fun for about an hour, but then I just want to start myself on fire.
The Sims is another one. So, I'm bored in life...Let's play a game! OH MY GOD! A GAME THAT LET'S ME SIMULATE LIFE?! That way I can be bored in life and bored in a game.

I wouldn't say I thought Lords of Magic was boring, I was just incredibly, incredibly frustrated by it: such a good game underneath, but you just couldn't find it
the NWN Original Campaign is a very good choice as well.
I have another one, although it's a console game: Fable bored me completely out of my mind. I played till after the Hero Academy and was basically bored all the time. Fable is, despite it's purty graphics engine, just MOTS.

My most boring:
KOTOR - Definitely not a bad game at all. I just didn't feel I could make any difference in the game. Everything was on rails.
SWG - Great graphics and a giant world to explore. But the missions and combat were sooo dull!

I must have found the fights in Wizardry 8 boring - I actually would doze off during them. Otherwise, I liked the game.
Arcanum got boring for me about 2/3 of the way through, although I was able to make myself finish.
NWN got boring about half-way through, although I was able to make myself finish it.
SoU is boring me to tears and I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it.
The Sims! Yes! I played it for all of 45 minutes then uninstalled it, never to play it again. I eventually managed to give it away in the GG freebies thread.
I think I must be the only person to find the original Max Payne boring. I like games to be much more open and felt the level designers didn't even try to pretend there was more than one way to travel through the game.

Morrowind - Daggerfall - Arena - For some reason I continue buying those Elder Scroll games, and I have yet to enjoy one.
Sacred - Boring.
Beyond Divinity - Hahaha. I'm playing this right now.
X2 - I couldn't get into it. After I got my first power plant setup I realized I wasn't having any fun at all. One of the few games I've started and not finished. And since I'm determined to finish BD, the only game on my list that I won't have finished.

You and I should get together before every game purchase. If I think it's awesome you should pass on it, and if you don't like a game, it's a must have for me

Meal wrote:I never played TES1, so I can't comment on the original game in the series.
Imagine an earlier, earlier, earlier version of Morrowind.
1 feature of note for Arena that deserves mention: the game had artifacts. Something like 20ish. You could, through investigation, get on the trail of an atrifact. It eventually lead to a 2 part dungeon quest, and you recovered siad artifact. You could only be in possesion of *1* artifact at a time. There were all sorts of weapons, some armor pieces, and even the Oghma Infinium. A book you read that gave you an uber stat boost. If you got the OI quest, you could then get anther artifact anyway (note: the "limit" did not kick in until you picked up said weapon; you could thus screen which item you wanted to go after by continuing to "troll" for quests).
Unintended consequence: items degraded in Arena (a staple of the series). So did artifacts. So you could get them repaired. When being repaired, they were not in your inventory. Tjus you could hord every artifact, put them in repairs, and then own every artifact.
That's my "funny old school game exploits" story fo the day.
Chris Gwinn wrote:The later one[Galciv]. I have no idea why I didn't like it, since I love MoO, SMAC, MoM, Civ, etc. I tried the demo several times and just found it incredibly dull.
I purchased it (not having played the demo). I found it incredibly dull as well. It's Civ in space, but with all the traditional civ elements it either didn't use/emphasize them (infrastructure), or IMO it provided a bland version (planet/civ management). The presence of space ships doesn't really do much (especially with the Civ style combat). Galciv sits on the shelf, and I doubt it will ever leave. I'm curious about the sequel, but as near as I can tell it will still be the same basic gameplay mechanics and I probably won't like it either (good luck to Stardock, none the less).
I found Dungeon Seige to be awful (and traded it). So was NN. I didn't care for either Diablo that much in single player.
I played NN and D2 multiplayer a bunch. They both had moments in that aspect. Noun, Orpheo, Howitzer and myself played about 2/3s of a famouse NN module with a 20 level dungeon. It was decent until about level 12ish, but the module was unfinished and it really started to show. Plus, I think we burned out on it. Fun until then, with a straight up fighter, cleric, mage, thief setup.
D2 had moments online as wlel, and I played it much more. But it did get boring after awhile.
Any game that had nonexistant AI sitting on top of considerable micromangement (Outpost, Ascension) would qualify for me (there needs to be *some* payoff for MM).
Arena, Daggerfal, and Morrowind all got boring pretty quickly.

I wonder if some of us are confusing aimlessness with boring. To me, there is some difference.
I never found Morrowind boring but the way you could just wander around this huge world or the way you can have a ton of quest and then lose compete perspective on what you really needed to do was off setting to me.
There were many times in my Morrowind playing experience that I felt the gaming was pointless, but not boring. Morrowind gameing world was just too beautiful and too large to be boring for me. But it wasn't until I zeroed in on only the main quest that I was able to finish the game.

Well, I can only speak for me. I'm pretty good at determining what I find boring (or pointless, for that matter). I don't have problems confusing it with anything else. I'm not sure why you think people are confusing boring and pointless. Some people may find pointless things to be boring. Or perhaps some people just find this game boring, and the pointlessness contributed. Or, some people found the game boring, but the "pointlessness" aspect wasn't really the overriding factor.
I'm not trying to pick on you here or anything DA, but the fact that the two can be different doesn't have to do with subjective opinions about a specifc thing. I doubt anyone else in this thread is having trouble confusing the two things (but then I could be mistaken). I guess I find the comment kind of odd.

For me, the gaming world was too big and empty and not filled with many things of significance (and how it looked wasn't really something I cared about). The NPCs were still cookie cutter. The combat was a shallow click and swing affair. I found all of it boring.

I think some people enjoy aimless wandering and other get bored by it. Was the Morrowind world huge and open and beautiful? Sure. Did I enjoy wandering around in it? No - I thought it was dull. And that was a lot of the game right there.
Different people find different things fun, and are usually equate boring with about the absence of fun when talking about games. So people are going to be finding different things boring. I don't confuse aimless wandering with boredom any more than I confuse golf with boredom; I find aimless wandering boring.

For me boring can be the difference from a game that has a feeling of been there, and a game that just looks pretty. I remember being incredibly bored with Quake, yet I loved Duke Nuke 'em 3D. Shadow Warrior was more fun then Quake 2, I prefer Max Payne 2 to both Halo 1 and 2, Realms of the Haunting was a true classic that never got the acclaim it deservered, and I still think Ultima 7 is the greatest RPG to ever grace any platform. While I really enjoyed FF 7 and 8, I really don't understand why Japanise RPGs are considered to be far superior to western RPGs when we have games like Fallout, Planescape, BG2, U7, Arcanum, Outcast, Gothic 1 and 2 and many more. Yet that era seems to be dieing, and on PC we are doomed to play Diablo clones 'till the auld beauty finally pops her clogs, and on console we end playing vastly dumbed down versions of games that we played years ago on Gate's former love.
Personally some of the most fun games I've played on PC were the Might and Magic games. I really loved Morrowind, but I don't know if it was a fun game. It probably had a lot more to do with using my imagination as I was playing. But I have always loved non-linear games. Fallout, Might and Magic, Morrowind, bring them on. I'll make my own story (admittedly rubbish)

Okay, Okay I over generalized. You caught me. But as I said later in my post, the aimless wandering in Morrowind was not my problem with the game and I found MW anything but boring.

Have there ever been that many PC RPGs released each year? Seems like there have been as many released recently as in the past. Just from Bioware, there's been NWN, KotOR 1&2 all in the last few years, and Jade Empire and Dragon Realms (or whatever it's called) should be out before too long. And BG3 has been rumored. Then you've got the Gothic 2 expansion, Gothic 3, Geneforge 3, and many more. Of course there will be more RPGs on consoles, because console gaming is more popular right now. It also makes sense, and is unfortunate, that some PC games that are also released on consoles will suffer from the limitations of a console (like KotOR). But the vast majority of gamers and critics still loved the game.

Windows beta starts in a week, sports fans. Vogel says a month to release, but he always says that. Call it 2.
After GF3 it looks like we may get Avernum 4. I have some probably longish thoughts on this I'll save for another time.
But as I said later in my post, the aimless wandering in Morrowind was not my problem with the game and I found MW anything but boring.

The original "Unreal". I usually love FPS games, but that game was sooooo dull. I played about 2/3 of it, waiting to see if the map design and gameplay would improve, but it never did. It remains the only game with an ending that I've ever quit due to boredom.
I've gotten bored of open-ended games and quit playing them, but I won't count them since I enjoyed their gameplay for many hours first.
