The new album from Gaerea, "Unsettling Whispers" is brutal. Behemoth fans will love it.

Also Bishop Briggs. My kids introduced me to her music. They actually got to meet her at her concert back in May.

Pallbearer announced a fall co-headlining tour with Tribulation last week. I wasn't very familiar with Tribulation, so I gave them a listen. I came away wildly impressed, and am now really looking forward to that show.
Think Ghost + harsh vocals - overt Satan worship. It's really good stuff.

Not JUST from Michigan, from freakin' Frankenmuth!
NOBODY is from Frankenmuth. It's a fake Bavarian tourist-trap of a place. You go there once a year to eat chicken meals family-style and buy Christmas tree ornaments.
I love Greta Van Fleet, they are awesome.

They still haven't released an album, have they? How are you listening to them right now?
You can't get a ticket to their shows locally anymore. People are gladly paying scalper prices three time their box office cost.... So that window's closed.

Outside of the singer looking overly punchable, those were some pretty good tunes. Will need to check them out.

Pretty sure you could say that about 99% of the stuff we listen to.
I've been listening to lots of Ohgr, in preparation for seeing them at the end of the month. The new album is really, really good.

They do a cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" that's been getting some radio play here. Between the singer's high voice and the band name that flashes on the radio while driving, I just assumed Greta Van Fleet was some new female artist with a big Adele-like voice.

My son has a regular lineup of videos he wants to watch (and it's what he wants to watch if I offer a movie). On the songs he doesn't dance to, he'll comment on the videos -- it's interesting to hear his interpretation. Last week, he came back from preschool with an entire sheet of paper covered in rectangles. I knew what it was but asked anyway (I sent my sister a picture of it and she knew right away!) - it was The Wall from Pink Floyd. He then made a comment that it explodes.
His play list is:
Jocko Homo (Devo)
Bohemian Rhapsody (Muppets)
Bohemian Rhapsody ("the real one" - Queen)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd)
Run Like Hell/Follow the Worms (Pink Floyd)
The Trial (Pink Floyd)
Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2 (which he calls "Leave those kids alone" - Pink Floyd)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (The Dickies)
GummiBear Song (kids song - he has a full dance routine down)
Duck Song (he sings along with this one)

That's the one. Sometimes I even give him grapes while the song is playing.

Is this what happens when you get old? Somehow my brain combined these two songs into one, even though they're not even close musically or even released at the same time. I guess the cigarette theme somehow merged them in my brain? Good lord. Need more coffee.
But hey, I guess if you're making a smoking mix tape (do kids still do this?), feel free to jump off from here.

For those without kids who have not had the pleasure/horror of listening to The Duck Song, here you go.
Just noticed that it has 352 million views. Pretty sure that at least 1/3 of those have come from my iPhone.

If someone forced me to listen to a duck song it would be Rick Dee's Disco Duck.

We did a bit of cultural education for the boy tonight: Smells Like Teen Spirit ("When does this song end? Is it over yet?"), 4' 33" ("This is boring."), and Rapper's Delight (intrigued silence). One out of three ain't bad.

You have got to show him the Soul Train episode when they played Rapper's Delight.
10 + minutes of amazing 70's dancing. Oh my...

Last night was mixed results for me too as I was introducing my son to Bowie. He liked Cat People well enough ("it's scary!") and Under Pressure (because he already likes Queen). Life on Mars, Heroes, and Space Oddity pretty much did nothing for him though.

I had to look up 4'33", never heard of that before. Is there some joke here that's just sailing over my head?

Bowie has been hit and miss with our kids too. They like "Ziggy Stardust" (mostly because the dog's name is Ziggy, and they think the song was written for her), "Magic Dance", and "Under Pressure", but could take or leave anything else.
We've been introducing some grunge era tunes as well. When we listen to music on Alexa in the evenings, we rotate who gets to choose a song between the four of us. So it usually ends up something like Kids Bop, Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons...then Alice in Chains (when dad gets to choose). They haven't given anything a solid "that's awful" yet, so I'll take that as minor progress.
Little B 9.5 has started taking a liking to classic metal. She always likes to ride in my car, because I let her listen to Metallica, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. She can belt out a mean version of "2 Minutes to Midnight". She also loves this cheesy power metal band that I saw on the 70K cruise a couple years ago called Twilight Force. I'll admit that they're very much a guilty pleasure of mine as well...it's super-catchy D&D metal.

You need to play him the music of my people - the ska punks. Perhaps the horns will speak to him as they did to me.

Yeah, I probably should have started with the group that introduced me to the greatness that is punk ska and my favorite color, plaid. Maybe I'm just all about East Coast ska?
EDIT: Bonus for forum members with young kids:

The Internet is amazing. I think this is literally what introduced me to ska. I think at that time Huey Lewis and the News were the greatest band ever. Really, having immersed myself in discovering "Industrial" and "Goth" and accepting "Grunge" all as these contemporary inheritors of the Punk I had come to love coming in to 1989, I was just beginning to branch out to this world of wonder not being played on the radio. Those were my golden years wop wop wop.
