Iowa's 3,000 megawatts of wind energy would like to talk with you.Isgrimnur wrote:I love how Nebraska and Iowa hate the future.
Iowa generates the second most wind energy in the country (with Texas generating the most). Per square mile Iowa generates significantly more wind energy than Texas (roughly .054 megawatts per square mile vs .031 for Texas).
Lack of official Tesla charging stations has little to do with how a state views alternative energy.

I don't know where Jeff lives but I've never seen a Tesla in person. According to the deliveries and orders map someone posted there are only 4 in the entire state of Iowa. I have seen numerous Volts and Leafs. They are harder to spot than a Tesla since they look like Nissans and Chevies rather than a magical space car.LawBeefaroni wrote:Either you don't want to see them, don't recognize them, or suburbia is a completely different world.Jeff V wrote:That's probably why I can count on one hand the number of electric cars I've seen, ever (and I only once saw a Tesla).
I can count on one hand the number of Teslas I see per mile on my drive in. Maybe. Sometimes I'll need the second hand.

I'm sure Iowa is a different story from Chicago. But don't take that map I posted as gospel. That's a self-selected subset of Tesla owners reporting their locations.

Re: tesla motors
I'm in suburban Chicago. The one I saw didn't look a magical space car -- I first thought it was just some uncommon car like a Scion sedan. The shape of the tail lights was the only thing that tipped me off that it was something different -- the car otherwise was dusty and in bad need of a wash, so was rather nondescript.EvilHomer3k wrote: I don't know where Jeff lives but I've never seen a Tesla in person. It's pretty damned impressive but the driver of the Hellcat was terrible. First, he redlighted. Second, and most importantly, had no idea how to actually run car down the track. Note: The description in the video mention this was his very first time at a drag strip so his poor performance is understandable.
So, impressive but not an accurate accounting of a Tesla Vs Hellcat drag race.
Still... that Tesla is pretty dang fast.

Also of note, the world record is for production electric cars.

Vídeo of what appears to be various friends (and Mom?) of a car enthusiast, engaging Insane mode on a Tesla. Highly recommend the explicit version (although there is a clean version as well).

Yeah- it hits rally really hard from a stop. The combination of AWD and the instant torque is unlike anything else. That said, from a high speed roll it's not *quite* as impressive, and also Carroll Shelby already pulled this trick way back in the day. When he was demonstrating the original Cobra, he'd put a hundred dollar bill on the dash and tell the passenger that if they could grab it, they could keep it. He'd nail the accelerator as they reached for it and they were thrown back. No video from back then, but I imagine the experiences were similar.
Regardless, I'm a huge fan of the 85D, and strongly considering one sometime this year.

Another year or two of this pace of improvement and they'll need a new mode--Ludicrous. The new Roadster can go to plaid.

As we were discussing a bunch of pages ago, it's entirely possible that Tesla ends up being an energy company that happens to also make cars.

That's the only way it approaches it's current valuation. It's overpriced for an EV company.Carpet_pissr wrote:BUY STOCK NOW BUY STOCK NOW BUY STOCK NOWZaxxon wrote:As we were discussing a bunch of pages ago, it's entirely possible that Tesla ends up being an energy company that happens to also make cars.
The current rumor driving today's pop, though, is that Apple is eyeing it for purchase. For $75B. I'd say that's crazy, but they bought freaking Beats for $2.6B (~11% of TSLA's current market cap!).

New Jersey
Tesla Motors' battle for acceptance has finally come to an end -- at least in New Jersey. According to Detroit News, Governor Chris Christie signed a bill yesterday that will allow the start-up to sell its all-electric vehicles directly to consumers from up to four locations.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: tesla motors
10,030 delivered in first quarter.
My math has that at a 33% increase, but I'm sure there's some new math in there. The Silicon Valley electric-car maker, disclosing deliveries earlier than its normal practice, said its global sales of the Model S sedan over the first three months of 2015 represented a 55% rise over the same period a year earlier. In 2014, Tesla delivered 32,733 vehicles--7,535 in the first quarter; 7,579 in the second; 7,785 in the third; and 9,834 during the final three months.
While Tesla's first-quarter sales results show growth, they also reinforce the expectation that the auto maker is banking on an acceleration of its quarterly growth rate over the nine remaining months of the year. Setting a target of 55,000 for 2015, Chief Executive Elon Musk has pointed to the launch of the Model X sport-utility in the second half as an event that will jolt volumes.

Re: tesla motors
33% YOY on the quarter but I don't think TSLA is mature enough for YOY quarter comparisons. It's all about growth every quarter and that growth has been slower, but steady.Isgrimnur wrote:

I have no idea what expectations were, I guess we'll find out on Monday.
What's interesting is that TSLA is just under half (40%) as big as GM by market cap. Their quarterly deliveries are about the number of cars GM sells in a day. Which is fine, since TSLA is all growth, not revs or units. And of course margins, etc are completely different. But it does put into perspective how much growth investors are expecting.

Re: tesla motors
Model S gets AWD:
Electric car maker Tesla Motors is going after mainstream luxury car buyers by adding all-wheel-drive and more range and power to the base version of its only model.
But the added features at the low end of the Model S lineup will come with about a 7 percent price increase, to $75,000 for those buying the cars. The base lease price will rise to $838 per month from $796 for 12,000 miles per year.
As of Wednesday, Palo Alto-based Tesla will stop selling the old base Model S called the 60.
...
The new all-wheel-drive model, called the 70D, can go a government-certified 240 miles per charge, has 514 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds.
...
CEO Elon Musk says with a $7,500 federal tax credit that takes the price to $67,500, plus tax credits in some states, the new version is price-competitive with BMW's midsize 5-Series, or the Mercedes E-Class when you add in savings from not buying gasoline. BMW's 5 Series starts around $50,000, while the E-Class starts at close to $52,000.
He said Tesla needed all-wheel-drive to appeal to luxury buyers, especially in colder climates such as the Northeast, where most luxury cars are sold. About 58 percent of the luxury car market in the U.S. is all-wheel-drive, according to Kelley Blue Book.
"It's also good in warm climates where there's heavy rain or slippery roads for any reason," Musk said in an interview. "We've seen a strong interest in all-wheel-drive in all climates, really."
Tesla's next vehicle, the Model X SUV due out late this year, will be offered with similar features at the low end of the lineup, Musk said. The company also is planning a $35,000 mainstream car called the Model 3 with a 200-mile range that's due out in 2017.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: tesla motors
Model S got AWD many moons ago. The news today was the replacement of the 60 with the 70D, the inclusion of AWD in the base model, and removal of the tech package & additional charge for supercharging capability on the base model. The net effect is that the low-end Model S rises by $5k, but becomes a much better car (30 more miles range, AWD, nav, supercharging, infinite-mile battery warranty).

Tesla S: 11.92 @ 112.11 MPH
So a slightly different result this time around.
