But I was stubborn and dogged on it any chance I got. I liked games where it had a narrative and direction. Morrowind was an open world and you could do whatever you wanted.

Then Skyrim came out. During that time, my gaming preferences evolved and I enjoyed the game. Yes, the game was clunky and I struggled with not being hand held, but I was able to fifindnjoyment.

There are still some RPRPGs tried to get into, like the Divine Divinity series and while I can appreciate the amount of work and what the developer tried to do, it just didn't grab me. It's why I haven't tried BG3.

Well, I have stStarfieldreordered, and I'm excited. I still like my narrative games with direction, but I did enjoy games like faFalloutoo. I just know I have to be more patient with this genre.

Ok, this got me. Not sure why, but I'm still chuckling, and everyone's followups are just as good.

On topic, I preordered on the first day, and I'll be playing as soon as I have it downloaded, finished with BG3 or not. Although I *do* still need to go buy an SSD. Any tips on that front in terms of SSD's?

You might want to start a thread over on General Computing with some specifics. I've found that forum to be very helpful regarding hardware issues.

No problem. There are folks over there who are not gamers but are pretty much gurus when it comes to computer hardware. Sadly it's been many a year since I kept up with the latest hardware trends

I have two disc drives, an SSD and a conventional hard drive, which is the one on which I have Steam installed. Is there any way to buy the game through Steam but have it install on a different hard drive?

Absolutely. I have Steam games installed on five different drives (one for regular games, one for group games, one for VR games, my OS drive for utilities, and a storage drive.) You just need to create additional Steam library folders. I believe it is done through the settings/downloads section, but a quick google will give you the details if I'm wrong.

Actually, make that six drives - I have two for regular games (one is an M2 drive for higher-end games, the other a regular SSD for other games.)

And before someone asks, yes, I have a seventh drive (an 8TB platter drive) for regular non-game storage.

Is there an eighth drive you are waiting for someone to ask about?

Well, since you asked...

No, it's just the seven. Any others are portable. ;)

GQ interview Todd Howard and plays Starfield for 8 hours:

https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/s ... -interview
It’s in the upper district of the city that you meet Constellation, the game’s Victorian-esque space explorer organisation and the main propellers of the central story. Outside their base, The Lodge – essentially an early-1920s-era Soho House, all chintz and log fires – there’s a whole raft of opportunities. I get distracted by a museum, where I catch up on three centuries of human history: a devastating Colony War, the fate of Earth, and the mystery of the Terrormorphs, the game’s main alien threat. Within 45 minutes I have 12 new quests leading me off-world. One has me smuggling contraband from the mining colony of Cydonia, on Mars, to gain the trust of the deadly Crimson Fleet. Smuggling is an entire subsection of the game, and Howard and Pagliarulo are particularly excited about the “Donnie Brasco vibe” of that questline. Another sends me to hunt space pirates in low gravity on the frozen plateaus of Europa. As I boost to huge heights using my rocket backpack, the combat has the responsive freneticism of something like Destiny rather than Fallout .

Steam->Settings->Storage. You can add drives there and choose install location/set default install

Ok, I thought I had ordered the premium package on Steam (PC) for the early access, but apparently I only ordered the standard "Preorder" for $75. Is there a way to upgrade to the Premium version for the extra $25-30?

I guess you could go to the Steam Support page and make the request there for a refund, as I don't see any upgrade option.

There doesn't seem to be a premium upgrade that I can see, but you should be able to refund the pre-order, then purchase the premium edition.

It's getting hard to resist the closer we get.

I already have the free standard version through gamepass. I can't pay the difference to upgrade to premium unfortunately.
I'm very tempted to try to get the money to just buy the premi version but that's running into obstacles
I do have a free game voucher from a site that I frequent and I think it would cover the premium version at best or allow me to pay them the difference at worst for them to give me the premi version.
I was saving it for a rainy day but it super tempting to use it. I actually wanted to use it for BG3 but they only work with Humble Bundle and it's not even mentioned there.
They are also running a daily contest for a free premi version that I've tried every day with no luck for 2 months so far. IIRC they stop in release day.
Another reason I'm thinking on just use it now is that with my brain damage itis VERY possible that I completely forget that I have it and never use it.

I am playing my own run in BG3 on my friends laptop while he's at work, but I still have limited time with it due to therapy and other medical adventures

Ugh... choices...

For anyone thinking about Game Pass:
Microsoft not only offers different tiers for Game Pass, but it used to offer a very simple way to try out the service: $1 would let you dive into its massive downloadable library for a month if you were a first-time user. But back in early August when Microsoft hiked the price of its most expensive Game Pass Ultimate service to $17 (Ultimate includes game streaming via the cloud), the company reduced the free trial to just 14 days. And now at the end of August, it would seem there’s no way to try the service out for any reduced amount or any amount of time. Ya gotta pay full price.

...

So while you’ll certainly be able to play Starfield on September 6 with Game Pass, you won’t be doing so via a free trial.

According to "CanIRunIt" I don't even meet the minimum requirements for Starfield. :? Part of me wants to test it out, since I run BG3 fine at a pretty high level, but I also don't want to be out the money if I can't get a refund.

Unless there's something specific mentioned on the Steam page for Starfield, I can't imagine a situation where you'd be unable to refund a purchase. Outside of you "abusing" the refund system (in their eyes) with lots of requests, I think this is one of the remaining benefits of purchasing directly from them.

They don't start the refund clock until after the pre-order ends, right?

Once the game launches, the two weeks/two hours policy kicks in.

Mostly the early access.
I have too much time on my hands so if I remember that the game came out but I still have to wait a week to play it will dig into my mind and there's not much left there to distract me.

I'm wondering if the game can auto check the VRAM and adjust how it uses it. Ghost Recon Wildlands IIRC actually showed a current VRAM usage bar and it changed as you turned on or off certain video settings. That would be handy. Also I imagine that one's fps and resolution settings would effect that too.

I always thought that 10GB VRAM I have was kind of a wonky amount :?
