That wasn't just any old alt-Reicher. It was Richard "Hail Trump!" Spencer himself, founder of the alt-right movement and honorary father of Pepe the Frog.
In November, the racism and anti-Semitism of the alt-right movement were on display in Washington when its members gathered to celebrate Trump's victory.
Atlantic magazine, which is recording footage of Spencer for a documentary, published a video of the same event showing audience members apparently giving the Nazi salute.
His remarks then were filled with racist imagery -- including references to "the black political machines" and Latino housekeepers -- as he bashed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's minority supporters.
Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Spencer said his support for Trump had waned.
"I am getting worried that he won't work on really big important issues like immigration," Spencer said. "That he'll get caught up on little things like making fun of people on Twitter."
Spencer denied being a white supremacist in a December 2016 interview with Ganim. But, in that interview he said, "Only white people can support what we call Western civilization." He also has said there should be a "peaceful ethnic cleansing," meaning individuals not of European descent should voluntarily leave the United States.
He seems harmless, as long as you're a white American. I can't see why anyone would want to punch him in his stupid racist face.

Normally I'd agree that punching a dude isn't a great way to send a message. But that assumes that both sides are at least willing to argue in good faith, with the basic ideals that everyone is a human, and deserves equal rights. Richard Spencer doesn't fit the bill because, among other things, be believes blacks and other races are sub-human, and a problem that needs to be exterminated. Sound familiar? Yes, he's got freedom of speech, but his right to not be punched only lasts until he starts sounding exactly like the guys who threw people into ovens.
I'm not saying that the guy doing the punching shouldn't be arrested and prosecuted, because nobody should be above the law. I am saying I hope he ran like hell after.

No matter how racist someone's viewpoint is, you don't resort to violence when they vocalize it. You rise above it with peaceful protestation and thereby prove them wrong. Not becoming a stereotype is the single best way to wipe out stereotypes.
If I was the suspicious type, I'd be wondering what the odds are of some rando lefty popping up, coldcocking alt-Drexler right in the holster and him being able to get back up and carry on with the interview, with his value-added tale of victimhood. Such perfect, almost choreographed, timing. I'd be thinking it was just like a ringside interview on a professional wrestling circuit.

Regardless of your opinion on how to deal with a racist, it's pretty universal that a cowardly attack doesn't advance the cause.
As for it being false flag, I doubt it. Or at least there's no reason to think that someone not working for Spencer wouldn't be above that action.

The point where violence is the answer comes very, very late. Thank God we're not there yet.
One thing certain, though, is that Spencer and his fascists and a lot of the alt-right are absolutely thrilled to be heading that way. Throwing punches only helps them.
I keep trying to understand why you would want to pick fights with two entities: the media and the intelligence community, which both have the power to completely make your life hell. I can't think of two entities I'd LESS want to get on their bad side.

The point is to further delegitimize the press among his supporters, and to establish Trump and his media outlets as the sole source of the Truth. Beyond his supporters, it's sufficient if the end result in their minds is "Trump says X, his opponents say Not X", because people who aren't paying daily attention to politics probably won't know or especially care which one is true. As long as the "Trump says X" sounds good (Trump is forcing companies to keep jobs here! Trump is draining the swamp!), it probably doesn't matter all that much how laughable it is.
As for the intelligence community, it's hard to say for sure how intentional it is, but if you think that they can't plausibly be won over, it may be worth pre-delegitimizing them too.

Fighting with the media consolidates his supporters belief that only he can be trusted. This enables him to do whatever the hell he wants and his supporters will dismiss any media criticism as biased and go along with whatever rationale Trump's team puts forth.
Taking on the CIA, though? I'm not sure about what's going on there. Maybe it's all pretext for him clearing house under the guise of how biased they are against him, and putting in his own stooges that stops any more investigations into him and run things his way.
Careful about debating politics: Man bites ear off another man during argument about Trump.

The disturbing thing for me is that my gut reaction right now isn't how to solve the problems, it is how to defend myself from them. That isn't a healthy response. Luckily it is just a gut reaction, but I know that a lot of other people will be having the same reaction.

I'm scared that it isn't solvable. It truly has gone too far (as evidenced in November, as the culmination of the past 8 years).
