In the early 80s, I and my friends got into the BBS scene (300 baud, baby!). I'll admit to downloading pirated Warez, but in my defense they seldom worked.

One of my best friends, though, got caught up in the doings of a group that was trading credit card numbers (etc) online. One morning the FBI came to his house and walked away with his Apple II, all his discs, some notebooks and paper folders, etc. He was interviewed but was never charged with anything.

As near as I can tell, however, the FBI still has one of my D&D character sheets.
Bet you're just waiting for them to give it back so you can restart that campaign.

My dad gave us a choice between a modem and a 48k 5 1/4 floppy drive. We took the later. However, one of our neighbors had a guy at work, also with a Atari 8 bit, so we got a bunch of games from him presumably from BBS downloading. I still spent all my working money on computer games. Looking back, if we took the modem, we couldn't have stored anything anyway with no media. The floppy was the right call. It was also much more educational, I suspect, learning how to make ATARI DOS and ATARI BASIC work.

I may or may not have worked on an auto-dialer in the early 90s to dial pretty much all phone numbers and find modems. It was for purely explorative purposes. I am not sure what the guy who asked me to do it was planning to do with it, but it was an interesting project.

It sounds like she already knew him and thought of him as a helpful neighbor.

Most sexual assaults are committed by people the victim knows and often trusts. They're already past the door, so to speak.

Just had my first fresh hamburger in I don't know when. Yay for Labor Day sales. 80/20 $2.50 a lb. in 3 lb quantities. I got to eat a fresh burger today and am making skettynmeatballs tomorrow to cover three days meals and still froze burger later, though that won't be anything like today's burger.

The things that make me happy.

Dad's experience was surprisingly more positive than anticipated. He laughed when I gave him the acceleration demonstration (honestly, only about a 75% acceleration demo, as I didn't want to give him a grabber right there in my passenger seat). He loved nearly everything about the inside and out of the car. He raved about the comfort of the seats. When he was talking to his wife afterwards he loved that he could just push a button and tell the car what he wanted, "he opened the glove box with his mouth! Navigation was way easier to set up than the Garmin!" When I mildly pushed him, he said his concern would be that he'd have to share the car with his wife (12-years younger) rather than the price or concerns about how many years the batteries would last...
Talking to my Dad last weekend, he let me know that he picked up a Nest thermostat. He was confident that the colors of the wires work with their current thermostat (which somehow isn't a dielectric strip with a mercury bulb hanging off). His concern is that the (giant 85") TV would block the wifi signal at the current installation location.

Pops is a marvel.

I have found that the only way to keep going is to give up.
I'm never going to get out of debt. Hoping I'm going to win the lottery is no way to go thru the rest of my life. Hoping to get healthy without a body transplant is never going to work. Hoping some outside cure is going to help my mental health is just a dream. Taking drugs that will zone me out is not going to work.
I just accept who and what I am and carry on. Soon, the day will come when I won't have to worry. Why worry about it.
And no, I'm not suicidal.

Most traditional baked beans are cooked with pork or bacon. That's the difference.

I think you may need to look again.

The first you show is indeed a 'baked in tomato sauce' recipe. That's the version of baked beans that you will see everyone else call "baked beans in a rich tomato sauce".

The second is Refried Beans, which are --famous-- for having animal-based fats, so the vegetarian label on that is pretty meaningful.

Yes, I'm always careful to pick vegetarian refried beans, since those labeled "traditional" are made with lard. That's problematic for my vegan wife.

I recently went to a Mexican restaurant with some vegan family members, one we hadn't been to before. The menu had a page with the header "Vegetarian/Vegan." It said that all the meals on that page came with choice of sides such as rice or refried beans. We were fairly confident that since the page was labeled "Vegetarian/Vegan," those sides would be vegetarian/vegan. It would be pretty stupid if they weren't, right? You'd have to be a complete and total clod to doubt that they were. The page says "Vegetarian/Vegan" right there!

Still, just to be sure, we asked the waiter. He was quite a nice fellow and admitted he didn't know, so he went to the kitchen to check. He came back and told us that the sides contained meat.

What a careless mistake for a restaurant to make on its menu. I lowered their already low rating just for that.

We went to a Mexican restaurant once and asked if the beans were vegetarian. The waiter enthusiastically replied, "Yes!" He then added, "There's just some bacon for flavor." :grund:

Ive never actually seen the 2nd one and the first one reminds me of the one I saw. Still find it a funny label for saying that beans are vegetarian if read simply as that...hey look its biological meat.

+1. And although I'm a committed carnivore, I'm not real pro-lard either, even though the lardy ones are creamier. I buy the vegetarian kind.

Lard is great. Improves the taste of so many fried things. If you've ever had french fries made with lard instead of vege oil you can really tell. When I was a child they sold lard everywhere. My granny always made her biscuits with it.

Lard isn't as bad as you've been told either Ill bet. Just go read up on it. Yes it has saturated fats but you dont eat it by the bucket. Also fat is an essential item needed for life.

Here is a small comparison.

One tablespoon of lard, for example, has 5g saturated fat, 5.8g monounsaturated fats, and 1.4g polyunsaturated fats.
One tablespoon of butter, in comparison, has 7.2g saturated fat, 3g monounsaturated fat, and 0.4g polyunsaturated fat.
Olive oil, on the other hand, has 1.9g saturated fat, 9.9g monounsaturated fat, and 1.4g polyunsaturated fat per tablespoon.

But really its a false thing to think lard is terrible. Another good lard thing is it doesn't raise inflammation like vege oils do. Seriously unless you're allergic to it and you're avoiding it because of decades of bad info then go read up a little...just the first couple Google pages or videos.
