It’s amazing sometimes thinking about the world we live in and how technology has made the world so small.

I was on YouTube watching some live streams, just to have something on in the background. There was a guy in Tokyo, just walking around showing the sites and talking about his city.

He had a few hundred people watching and, something I rarely do, started reading the live chat. I decided to ask a question about a shrine he was walking in and he replied to me on the stream while walking. It just boggled my mind that half a world away, there was an instant connection through a video.

I know this is commonplace now but as an old man hesitant to dip his foot in and reach out to strangers, it thrilled me.

I bet it was like that to the first people to use a telephone to talk to someone..didn't even have to be overseas could just be across town.

I used to watch a lot of Twitch live streams. They know me by my nick and squee out my name..the girls anyways..some of them...and no no money involved lol. But I watch people overseas who just walk their city like in Vienna Austria and such. Its so cool.

The 3 or so girls that know me best are fun to just talk with. They are pretty and smart and its nice. Again no money as I have none. Other people will ask them to say stuff and they just say no and stuff and Ill ask right away after them and they say or do it lol. Must miff some guys. I like that too lol. Im a big flirt on there. But I watch everyone I can that are interesting.

Right now a guy named Subwaysean is walking across America with only a stroller of supplies. All he eats are at Subways on his path. He is already in Colorado after a few months. I think total to get to Santa Monica pier is 6 months.

I remember when we first got on the web (still on dial-up), Wife wanted to "go to" the Louvre and see their collection, which had just gone online, and I couldn't be convinced that we wouldn't have to pay for a long distance call.

Oh the Twitch thing...theres a lady named nicolebelafonte that everyone should visit once. She is 34...prob in real life too...but lives in 1959. Her channel is the only black and white one and she plays jazz records in the background. She NEVER ever ever breaks her role. She loves that era in rl. you can check her out online other than Twitch. Her home is straight out of the 50s. Clothes.furnishings, music..all..its really cool.

If you want to feel like your watching tv in the Fallout timeline go watch and talk to her. She is great.

We had a JJ in town but it closed after a year. This was about the time of the boycott over their CEO posing with trophy animals he killed. I only ever went there once, when they were giving away free subs, so I have no opinion about their food. Presumably it wasn't made from elephants and rhinos.

We've made a huge mistake.

A young lady that I know took out student loans to earn an art degree in sculpture, and especially metal sculpture. When she was in school she posted a lot of pictures of herself wrangling metal into art.

Now she's a 31-year-old hairdresser who's $60,000 in debt. She very briefly tried to be a welder before that, but there isn't a lot of demand for petite young women in that field.

That's exactly the story you wanted to read tonight! I'm confident that your missus will find her skills more in demand than is metal art.

When dad was finally able to afford a home after the mom/dad thing ended it was like 1978. For his kitchen table he had a picnic style one. A big hulking table that was about 7 feet long with matching benches. its was some kinda dark wood with a lighter or almost reddish tint running through it all. Like cherry or something. But the benches were my favorite thing. 7' long and glass slick. I was like 8 or 9 and you could come at them from the side at a little speed and slide from end to end and still be going lol. the only thing stopping you was a wall or floor. I think I was still sliding on them at age 16 lol. I miss that set. Just popped into my head as me and my sister were talking furniture yesterday.

Dr. MrsHrdina got her PhD some time ago, with the hope of working in the pharma research field.

Instead she ended up teaching chemistry at a local university (not tenure track) until she finally got fed up enough with that to trade it for a job in industry that offered less money and a longer commute. She is quite happy with that decision.

Care to guess who bid for the meat? The Republican candidate for governor and their local state rep. When they reached the office for help, they were told to shut up and give up, albeit in kinder and gentler words.

Was it the girl who was under contract with the fair, or the parents who originally bought the goat? Can children legally sign contracts in this region? Were they ignorant of the fact the goat would be slaughtered, or did they just get cold feet? Pretty obvious lack of compassion on the parts of 4-H and the cops obviously, all over $63.14 if I understand correctly. I admit I don't know what the problem was if they agreed to cover the expenses, especially if the buyer wasn't insisting/suing. But I still feel like there was a lack of parental foresight here? And what did the buyer being a Republican candidate for governor have to do with anything? Was there any more that he cold have done? And were the cops really going to arrest (or worse) somebody over it?

I've got a Primo Hoagies just a block from my house. They've spread up and down the East Coast, but they started in Philly and I think mine was one of the first locations.

I didn't even know "hoagie" was a word until I moved here.

Our best choice is a place called Double GG. There's also Richardi's, but they're cash-only with no web ordering. Then there's the local House of Pizza (BHOP) for backup/variety. None of them are chains. There's also a Potbelly within easy striking distance, but given the better, closer choices we never go there.

Some places around here call them "grinders."

I think there is still one Quiznos around here. I really like them but they were expensive even the before times. Jersey Mike's seems to have moved in to fill the Quiznos void for a higher quality toasted sub but again, price was prohibitive for me.

As far as hoagies go, I do pay too much for the occasional cheese steak hoagie from a worthy place but that is a treat among treats. I haven't had one for a year or more though, so that $8 sandwich may very well be a $10 sandwich by now.

I don't remember any of our fairs ending in auctions and slaughter. That just feels like some cartoon villain level of wrong but then maybe I'm too subrurbanized.

Chicago reversed its river to save itself from pollution

I'm watching the local news, and they're reporting that they've re-reversed the flow of the river due to the heavy rains and flooding we've had the last few days (pushing the water into the lake instead of having the down-river flooding). I'm hopeful we'll turn it back soon and start sending our garbage water back to St. Louis where it belongs.

Yeah. "Grinder" makes no sense. "Sub" (for "submarine sandwich") makes sense due to the shape.

I grew up down South, where it's sometimes said the sandwich in question is called a "Po' Boy." In my experience (GA/AL/MS/LA/TN), though, the standard meat/cheese/veg sandwich is still a "sub." "Po' Boy" is reserved for the versions with fried seafood.

Obviously, these are all sandwiches. And the regional name for them can either try to dominate all such sandwiches - or take on its own meaning and establish itself within a more refined defnition.


I've always, ALWAYS, looked at Po'Boys as a version of this. As Holman describes, a Po'Boy will be with Aligator, Fish, or Shrimp. The Hoggie is freed up to be a Sub. Also the Grinder is just NY versrion of the Hoggie... Subs are Grinders/Hoggies - in any place that doesn't have a hard-on for "Hoggie" or "Grinder". Somewhere like Chicago.


edit:: OH OH! to that whole point, as Holman will agree (fingers crossed) - the Po'Boy is never served on an entirely soft bun - the roll has a nice crust designed to ultimately hold the grease of the sandwich.

There was an Italian deli near my office that had the best sandwiches. I would eat there twice a week. I haven’t been there since we shut the office down.

We have a chain called “Sourdough Something” near us that makes pretty good sandwiches.

Highly recommend. Definitely would Gator Po' Boy again.

Anyone have Mr. Heroes around them? We have them back in Ohio. They specialize in cheese steaks and they’re greasy, sloppy chunks of heaven that have fallen to earth. They also have a burger called a Roman Burger. When my friend got married while he was living in San Francisco, we flew out to be in his wedding party. The one thing he asked was that we bring him a Roman Burger. So we flew all the way from Akron to San Fran with one in our stowaway luggage. Cabin smelled like a damn grease pit by the time we landed. But the first thing our friend asked about when we landed was that damn burger…which he promptly ate in the airport arrivals area. Still amazed he didn’t get food poisoning.

I haven't had a decent po' boy since the Dixie Kitchen closed quite a few years ago when its owner moved back to N'awlins. Other than BBQ, Southern food just isn't very popular up here. I do love a good shrimp po' boy though.
