Cheesesteaks are a charged cultural issue in Philly.

Dr. Oz was recently labeled a carpetbagger for visiting one of the two high-profile competing cheesesteak outlets (Pat's vs Geno's) in the city's tourist zone. Lame, Doc.

But there are top-notch cheesesteak venues in every part of Philly. We're blessed here in the NW to live less than a mile from Dalessandro's, which is often named the best in the city. Meanwhile, its high-quality rival Chubby's is just across the street.

When movers brought our in-laws' furniture from NYC to our new place in Philly, we bought Dalessandro's cheesesteaks for them. They were blown away and declared Philly the best place to have sandwiches.

If you want real cheese steak you have to go to Gino's or its competitor.

The Philly cheesesteak sub is a class unto itself. The best one I've had locally is at the 110 Grill, which I guess has a few locations. I had a memorable one at the Chickie & Pete's in the PHL airport.

Is that from personal experience or are you passing on a YouTuber’s opinion ?

I purposely used the name "cheese steak" (splitting it into two words) and didn't include the word "philly" anywhere (even though I grew up in a town called New Philadelphia, oddly enough) in an attempt to hopefully stave off the mass violence and rioting that could potentially erupt had I done otherwise.

No....some video about the best cheesesteak in Philly. Showed a lot of places. Came down to Gino's and I think it was Pat's.

I think I was surprised most at it being canned cheesewiz the places used...I always thought it would be more exotic or something.

We just did a week long trip through parts of PA sort of scouting for a move. I've got to say I wasn't that impressed with Chubby's. The cheesesteak was big but a touch bland. It was a good base but I'd need to go back a couple of times to work out the perfect set of additions to the basic model before I'd say it was really great. To my taste the best sandwich we found on the trip was the Italian hoagie at Kovac's near the train station in Media.

The worst part of the trip was that both my wife and I liked Pittsburgh better than Philly. Part of the reason for moving is to be closer to family and it feels really weird to move to someplace 6 hours away. It would be closer than the 12 hours we are now but it still seems silly.

About 30 years ago, a 22year-old-ish self and a few 22year-old-ish friends used to frequent Chicago's Philly's Best.

Knowing nothing better, it was regarded as --the best-- and we were totally in love with it, regardless if it was or wasn't. (Although it still is generally regarded)

Anyhow - the thing that made it so especially good was that you could order something called: The Scary

It was a gorgeous delivery of cheesesteak, but in a french bread that was actually a foot-long garlic-bread loaf. It was just amazing. Unbelievable. And I will just say that if you were even remotely stoned -- this was nothing short of manna.

I had something like that happen once a couple years ago.

It then proceeded to leave Carol Stream and go to, no joke, some US military base in Germany.

Amazon did something not too different. They shipped from Chicago to the closest distribution center, wherein it the item could have arrived on time or even up two days early, then shipped it Pennsylvania where it sat in warehouse for a week before going off to UPS who then shipped it from a more distant location, arriving a week late. I'm mostly down to ordering from Amazon only if they are large savings, are the only place to find something (neither of which is happens often anymore) or I have a gift card to cash in, which seems to be about once or twice a year.

Once a month, our IT team sends out a 3-4 minute video by Ninjio about different security topics. They're all scenario based animated shorts showing different types of IT security issues (phishing e-mails, password hacks, call center scams, etc.). They're SO terrible with mustache-twirling hackers and stalwart cybercrimes investigators, but in a "so bad they're hilarious" way.

Lots of them also "star" D-list actors, which the videos prominently feature at the beginning. Today's was "Call Center Scams - starring Tia Carrere as Heidi". Last month's was "Spear Phishing, starring Stacey Keach as 'FBI agent#1'". I feel obliged to watch them, simply to see what poor has-been actor pops up in need of a paycheck.

The :chefs kiss: in today's episode was the poster behind the hacker, which showed an anime character who looked a little bit - but not exactly - like Spike Speigel with the title "Cowboy Depop" on it.

It reminds me of when I discovered I could buy a whole little baggy of 100 glasses nose pads online for $2.08 rather than walking into an optometrist's shop and forking over $10 for a single replacement. (Though in honesty they didn't charge me half the time--sometimes even if I didn't buy my glasses there.) In reality it was more like 200 because I could now replace them one by one.

My credit scores have jumped up again..this time both of them. Nice.

655 and 744 now. That first one was stuck at 620 for years. The other one was the one that dropped 100 points when the bankruptcy was paid of. its back higher than it was before any bankruptcy. Ill take it. I think in the last few months its risen nearly 150 points.

So how long before we get live SAT views of Earth we can zoom with? Like Google Earth or Google Maps but live. I have so often wanted to see how crowded a place is before going or to see if a place is even still there if ive not been in years. Just today Id like to know if my local market outside it still there. They close in fall and theres no phone out there...hate to waste gas plus have no ac and only 1 window working to go and find no one selling veggies.

Mark 11
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
...
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.
21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

The usual interpretation (because of the episode's placement among others about the weakness and corruption of faith in Israel) is that the fig tree is a metaphor for a dead faith that bears no fruits.

The ellipses are just as fun.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,
16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

It looks like we have moved one step closer to moving in retirement. That is good but suddenly the rather general search of houses, neighborhoods, and towns in our selected area (roughly within 2 hours of Philadelphia) has become more important. Which has suddenly made me extremely conscious of racial demographics and how much I find myself questioning any opinion I find online for hidden racial motives.

Don't know if anyone will care, but I saw this over on YouTube, a clip from the movie Strategic Air Command (1955) with Jimmy Stewart. That's not the part I cared about, the cool part is the preps, the start-up and the take-off of a B-36. After it's in the air you can quit watching if you wish

Turn up the volume :D

I have a thing for weird wallets, and I keep backing them on Kickstarter, but not all fo them. And sometimes, the item presented... just came out a bit underwhelming upon arrival.

I bought the "MinWallet" which is composed of just a couple metal clips, and stretchable fabric. And it works quite well... Except the "instant access pocket. It doesn't fit a card-sized object, and it's NOT a coin pocket. So what do you put in it? No idea.

But it does have a lot of interesting features: The ends can be clipped onto a belt (backpack belt / messenger bag belt, or actual waist belt), and the ends can be "reversed" so a lanyard / clip can be attached, such as a retraction mechanism for ID's. And it *is* smaller than my existing wallet while holding almost everything (except for 2-3 items I decided are not important). And the sides are stretchable so it *can* be used to hold money, but more cumbersome than a billfold and holds less bills. It also lacks an ID window, but that doesn't seem as important nowadays. I guess I'll have to try it for a week or two and see how it goes.
